… They said money can buy everything. But why can’t I buy your love?…
..........“Thank you for shopping at our shop.”
..........Cheerful greeting with a graceful bow from a young shop attendant was heard when the last customer left the jewelry shop. She kept the jewelry cases in place before turning to her mistress behind the counter.
..........“All is done, Miss Adriana.”
..........The young mistress in her elegant black dress glanced up from her ledger and nodded in acknowledgement.
..........“Thank you, Maria. I’ve just done with the account. What a long day we had. Let’s get home.”
..........The lady owner of the most luxurious jewelry shop in downtown, Adriana was well-known for her business skill as well as her exquisite beauty. The 24-year-old lady came from a noble family. Everyone said she was so lucky she got all a girl wants. Brain, beauty, and money. But only “the lucky girl” herself knew well she was not that lucky for she could not possess what she desires the most…
..........Adriana left the shop and didn’t feel like to go back to her mansion. She walked down the alley a bit further. Her high heels clicked on the concrete pavement with every step she took. How long have I ever taken a good walk? Familiar faces greeted her now and then as she walked by of which she gracefully returned their courtesy. She walked on blocks after blocks, away from the center of the town, until a luscious garden came into her sight. It was a simple garden yet its tranquil scenario made this small greenery somehow resembled the mythical Garden of Eden. The lady chose to sit down on a lone white bench at one corner. Soft breeze blew her purple hair as she reached for her lighter.
..........She puffed out a trail of sherry-scented smoke as she mused to herself. How long have I ever been to myself? Just idly sitting here and enjoy the nature was a good relax after long day of working. Suddenly the bush before her quivered and gave way to a small figure. A boy with a pair of foxy ears and fluffy tail popped out. He startled when he saw her.
..........“Adriana-san. Ah. Did you come here to see Zsolt?”
..........“Oh. Hi Laxis. I just take a little walk for fresh air.” She automatically glanced around looking for a certain someone she expected to accompany the fox boy.
..........“What are you doing around here? Didn’t Zsolt come with you?”
..........The puppy shifted uncomfortably as he heard she mentioned his owner’s name.
..........“I… Zsolt hasn’t back home yet. So I went out to look for him.”
..........“Eh? He usually reaches home around 6 pm.” She lifted her watch. “It's only 5 pm now. One more hour till he reaches there, isn’t it?”
..........Adriana noticed the uneasiness in the young boy’s attitude.
..........“You look a little nervous. What's wrong? You can tell me. Please, sit here.” She moved aside to give seat for Laxis.
..........The fox boy sheepishly sat down besides her as he was told. He fixed his gaze at the ground. His claws kept fidgeting at the hem of his pants. Adriana let him take his time until he finally looked up and whispered softly. “May I ask you a question?”
..........“Sure. Speak up your mind. I will try my best to answer.” She humorously replied the child.
..........Laxis held his breath in hesitation before slipped out almost inaudibly.
..........“Do you…do you still love Zsolt?”
..........Adriana was stunned by Laxis’s simple question. Her entire body numbed. She felt a sudden pang at her chest. The old wound began to sting as if it was going to bleed. Bleed red crimson blood.
..........The lady stared back at the boy. She wasn’t sure why the puppy wanted to know of her feeling for his master. She was silent for a long while. Finally she sighed and softly spoke.
.........."I don't know why you're asking me this. But I must respect your courage to ask. I guess ... it's alright to tell you ... my own feeling. Just promise me you’ll keep it secret between us. Can you promise me?"
..........The puppy nodded in reply. Adriana made a small smile, drew in another sherry- flavored smoke, and then slowly told her story…
..........Crimson. Yes. It was the red passionate hue that bound her to him. Those crimson locks were the first sight that drawn her attention to him. Her first encounter with Zsolt was still vivid in her memory. The tall, red-headed man with stoic face was introduced to her as Rance’s friend at one of her house parties. Zsolt was different from other males she had known. Many men had approached her for her beauty and much more for her money. But he and Rance were exceptional. They never showed interest in her social status. That’s why the three of them became close friends. They loved to hang out together. She often stole a glance at the red-haired demon when he was off guard. Her grey eyes carefully studied his masculine features. His square jaw line, thin lips, long nose. She traced up to his one sharp crimson eye that always seemed to look at something afar. She couldn’t help wondering what he was looking at in his mind. His missing eye behind the eye patch and a long scar slashing across his stern face which Zsolt never told them how he got it. He was like a man of mystery. And she was so tempted to find out what was behind his scar.
..........She decided to ask him for a date and was glad that he didn’t turn her down. It was her who initiated a kiss. After several dates they became lovers. Along the time Zsolt was gentle to her. But Adriana could feel that their relationship was not love. She felt it that even when he was holding her in his arms, his heart was not with hers. She lay by his side yet she never existed. She would look at him while he was sleeping, observing the rise and fall of his chest. Her ivory fingertip slowly traced the mark of his scar. She yearned to kiss away all the pain whoever had inflicted on him. But as her lips was about to touch his, he flinched. Adriana’s heart sank. She was rejected even in his sleep. There was always an invisible wall between them. No matter how hard she tried to break through, Zsolt always gently pushed her aside, not even to let her in.
..........“I was the one who asked for break up.” Adriana closed her eyes as she recalled the most painful incident in her life. It was on Christmas’s Eve that she came to the final solution after so many nights of tears on her pillow.
..........“It was very hurt ... but more hurt to see him look through me. I had never been in his eyes. And I also didn't want him to force himself to be with me. He was not happy, I knew. I have never seen him ... happy from his true feeling. He accepted me because he was so kind that he didn't want to hurt my feeling. But he never knew what he did to me is more painful. So I decided to end our misery."
..........She saw herself crying softly by the fountain with her lover sat silently by her side, not dare even to hold her or dry her tears. She knew he was also sad. But he couldn’t help it. They could never manage to make it. Adriana paused and turned towards the sky. “And it was over between us.”
.........."To tell you the truth, I still love him until now. How could I forget him so easily after so many years I have loved him?"
..........She signed again as she softly went on. "I'm trying hard to erase my feeling. But ... it's so hard, you know?"
..........Laxis placed his hand upon Adriana’s. He couldn’t utter a single word so he kept silent as tears welled up his hazel eyes. A tear rolled down his cheek. The lady was surprised to see him crying.
..........“Why are you crying?”
..........“…Because… you look so sad.” He simply said, holding her hand more tightly. It was a strange sight of a small boy holding an elegant lady’s hand trying to comfort her despite he was the one in tears. Laxis couldn’t understand why he felt so sad for her. He was sorry that Zsolt and Adriana couldn’t make it. All he could do for her was crying the uncried tears for her.
..........Adriana was surprised upon hearing Laxis’s reply. He was crying for me? The puppy’s fluffy ears all drooped as well as his foxy tail. The small figure shook as he cried his eyes out. His warm tears dropped on the back of her gloved hand drop after drop. The sight before her was so touching. Adriana took her free hand to wipe Laxis’s tears on the boy’s pink cheek and smiled.
..........“You are so kind, Laxis. But you don’t need to lose you tears for me. I cried for it enough and decided not to cry anymore. You must let bygone be bygone, step forward into the future. It’s true I still love Zsolt and want him to be by my side. But both of us know well it’s impossible. I don’t regret for what I have done. It was the best way for me and Zsolt.”
..........She patted on the puppy’s head gently.
..........“Stop crying now, tough guy. Or do you want Zsolt to question why you are crying? That would bring us into problem since you promised me this would be our secret.” She grinned.
..........Laxis looked into her warm smiling face and suddenly wiped his tears away with his free hand. He locked his scruffy eyes with her beautiful grey ones.
..........“Yeah… our promise.” Laxis smiled and jumped down the bench. Then he turned to face her.
.........."I won't cry easily anymore, Adriana-san. You gave me strength... I want to be strong like you.... I used to be all alone but now..." His smile widened "I have friends...." Suddenly he felt his face was reddening, so he abruptly looked away...
.........."Ah.. Well.. I have to go back to check on Zsolt. It's half past six now. Maybe Zsolt is back and is preparing dinner. See you later, Adriana-san!"
..........He ran off then stopped in his track and ran back.
.........."Adriana-san, I forgot to tell you something."
..........“Yes?”
..........“You know? You are very pretty. There must be many guys wanna stand by your side and willing to give his life to you.” With this he beamed widely and sprinted off like a wind.
..........Adriana blinked at Laxis’s word. What did he say? The puppy must get something wrong with his head. Yes. True that many men were trying to court her. But they were all frivolous idiots. Zsolt was the best man she ever found. Another was her best friend and advisor, Rance.
..........Adriana smiled as she watched Laxis running away until his back was out of her sight. She felt so relieved having someone listening to her. Since her break up with Zsolt, she has been avoiding to admit her true feeling. She kept telling herself that it was over. That she must forget him. But she knew well that he heart would skip a beat every time she saw his piercing crimson eye. She thought the wound had fully healed. But the meeting with Laxis today had re-opened the old wound and let it bleed till her last drop of blood. Strange that it didn’t hurt as much as she thought it would be. In contrary, it felt so good after she let it out. She felt thankful for her young companion.
..........Thank you, Laxis. This is one of the best days I’ve ever had.
..........Someday soon she would look straight into that crimson eye without feeling any pain.
..........Someday soon she could bravely say it was completely over.
..........She smiled and stood up ready to head back to her mansion. Suddenly her phone rang a familiar tune. Rance was on the line. His stuttering voice was heard with Grant’s cheesy whistle in the background.
..........“Care for a drink tonight?”
..........“Sure.” Her smile widened. Even though she has lost the love from the man she loved, she still had her friends. And that was more than enough for the lucky girl.
