This leads me to this question, how durable is a soul? For recarnation to work and a soul to survive a split, they must be tough little suckers.

For my beliefs, I believe in science. So thus, I'll apply it here to recarnation. If everything has to be conserved from energy to matter, souls would have to, wouldn't they? To follow Newton's laws, they would. That doesn't mean the soul couldn't break or rip apart, the parts just can't disappear.

Then what makes up a soul? To break down, something must be made out of pieces. Anyone have any idea what a soul is made of?

In the kemetic belief, the soul is made of many parts, the two most prominent were the ba (True soul, that which is forever eternal) and the ka (the heart-soul, the seat (foundation) of our personality). The ba can never be destroyed and depending on how a person lives thier lives, the ba can either go onward to the Duat, or heaven, or be reincarnated as the ka is devoured by Ammit. A new ka is created then by several Gods and Goddesses in giving the ba a new chance to reach enlightenment.

I'm Buddhist and Pagan, and both religions generally believe in reincarnation.

Buddhist- (this is gonna be long)

Rebirth in Buddhism is the doctrine that the consciousness of a person (as conventionally regarded), upon the death or dissolution of the aggregates (skandhas) which make up that person, becomes one of the contributing causes for the arising of a new group of skandhas which may again be conventionally considered a person or individual. The consciousness arising in the new person is neither identical to, nor different from, the old consciousness, but forms part of a causal continuum or stream with it. The basic cause for this persistent re-arising of personality is the abiding of consciousness in avidya (ignorance); when ignorance is uprooted, rebirth ceases.
Although the cessation of a life is not in itself a sufficient condition for the inception of a new life (since arhats, pratyekabuddhas and buddhas pass away without rebirth), the supporting conditions for a new birth are almost always present. From an external perspective, each life appears as a link in a beginningless sequence of lives, varying in length and in quality.
Buddhist cosmology, these lives can be in any of a large number of states of being, including those of humans, any kind of animal, and several types of supernatural being (see Six realms). The type of rebirth that arises at the end of one life is conditioned by the karmas (actions of body, speech and mind) of the previous life; good karmas will yield a happier rebirth, bad karmas will produce one which is more unhappy.

This was taken from a Wikipedia page. I figured it could explain better than I could.

Pagan- (not as long lol)

Most Pagans believe in reincarnation. There is a strong affinity with the idea of cyclical life patterns, which do not cease with the death of the physical body. Most Pagans have no concept which could be described as heaven or hell in the commonly-used Christian sense. However, Northern Pagan traditions encompass both a heaven and a hell, with a sophisticated philosophy which describes the operation of these realms. Briefly, Heaven (Asgard) is a final resting place, and Hell (Hel) is a place of rest, from where souls may choose to be re-born. In the Northern Traditions, Hel is not a place of damnation and torture.

The Wiccan religion has what is called "The Summerlands"; a place where souls find rest before being re-born into the physical world.

The Druid belief in reincarnation is confirmed many times in classical sources; e.g. Posidonius (quoteed by Diodorus): "... [Druids believe that] the souls of men are immortal, and that after a definite number of years they live a second life when the soul passes to another body."

Julius Caesar: "The cardinal doctrine which they seek to teach is that souls do not die, but after death pass from one to another; and this belief, as the fear of death is thereby cast aside, they hold to be the greatest invective to valour."

Each Pagan religion has its own philosophy about the afterlife, and about reincarnation. Individual Pagans may also have their own philosophy about these subjects, for the Pagan religions do not have a dogma, or strict set of teachings, which all Pagans must folow.

This was taken from http://www.witchesway.net/links/paganism/beliefs.html

So there, essentially, are my beliefs on reincarnation. It's a mixture of the two, really, see it as you will. ^_^

PM me if you want to know more about me or the religions I follow. I seek, not to convert, but to converse. *bows*

Well, I am buddhist, however, my take on reincarnation is different...

I beleive when us humans die, we become free of our bodies and are free to exam the past, the present and the future, however, we can not change anything inside of time. And then there is outside of time, where there is a whole universe of dead beings roaming in peace.

OR

When we die, we can go back to Earth in another humans body, leaving our memories behing until we die in that body, thus, remebering your past other life, and then being able to chose again and again.

Call me wierd, but... that's just what I beleive. 3nodding

Hm, reincarnation.
I have a fairly simple belief of this:

When you die, you can choose to be reborn.
It does not matter when you make that decision.
You have the same basic personality type in all lives, but choose for certain things to happen to you when you are choosing to be reincarnated.
All spirits crave all the knowledge they possibly can, and the best way to get knowledge is to experience.
When you are in a body, you don't remember past lives.
You can remember if you chose that you would, through certain experiences.
I believe that you don't necessarily have a soul-mate as much as you have a friend who chose to be reborn and connected to your learning experience.
I do believe our souls have genders but that it doesn't limit the gender of the human body you inhabit.

I'd get more detailed, but I have a headache... too much computer screen.

@ Murder of Angels: your beliefs are quite intriguing. I'd love to hear more, if it isn't an imposition.

While I'm still on my personal journey to nirvana, I've had little time to contemplate reincarnation, although I believe whole heartedly in it. I don't believe we reincarnate as anything other than humans, though.
