1. The Purchase
"In here," Carrie said easily as she stepped through the front door of the rather fragrant shop, "This is where I bought the Polly-oil." She looked back and smiled to her friend, more to make sure she was still there than anything else.
Polly yawned and clung to his mother's shoulder. Naps were good, except when they made you more tired than you started out.
Following after, slightly sullen on principle of having to leave her house and be exposed to the outside world, Evie still managed an interested look around.
"Huh. Not quite the evil laboratory I was expecting," she said, ignoring the urge to sneeze as a mix of sweet smells hit her in the face.
It was close to closing time and Olivia was in the back counting up the money from the customers of early in the day. She usually didn't expect people to show up this late as most were at home snug in their beds, but apparently she was mistaken.
Ment was sitting in the front, pretending to be some sort of congressman as he talked to himself while look amongst a small display of glass burners, "And if you elect me president I'll make sure you get double deserts for dinner! And make sure they're not crappy like 'Livia's!"
Dessert?
"Ment! Ment!" Polly called out, wriggling in his mother's grasp and suddenly awake, "Ment, I want dessert!"
Carrie placed the child on the ground and he scampered away to his friend. She waved to Ment and turned to Evie, giving an eerie sort of grin.
"Let's go sniff us some children."
Toying with the cord of her headphones, Evie looked around again, this time uncertainly. A kid? She could barely handle a cat.
"Okay," she said, trailing after Carrie. After all, she didn't have to light the thing. She could still buy one and keep it for aesthetic reasons....whatever they happened to be.
Polly giggled and squeezed Ment hard, grinning from ear to ear.
"I missed you too! Look, look, that's my mommy's friend Evie! She says bad words."
Carrie laughed slightly as she moved to the rack of scents, uncapping one, looking revolted, and placing it back where it had been.
"Only occasionally," Evie said, facing a rack next to Carrie and investigatively sniffing at something named 'passionfruit'. "Bleagh....er. No offense," she said to the oil, wrinkling her nose as she put it back.
Ment blinked at both Carrie and Evie and looked bakc to Polly, "Is your mommy buying another Scent?" He asked, looking back to the lady who said the bad words, "'Livia says bad words too sometimes....Like when I break things."
"Nope! She's showin' Evie where she found me," Polly replied, nodding, and then added, "Evie said bad words at a squirrel once."
"Horror? What does horror smell like?" Carrie wondered aloud and lifted the vial to her nose, sniffed, pulled away; sniffed again and looked down in confusion.
She wasn't sure if she liked it or not.
Mulling around and sniffing at things occasionally, Evie drifted away from the flowery scents and back over to the more conventional fruity stuff. Hmm, pineapple, pear, blueberry...drat, no pomegranate. Though, the neon green one looked interesting. She picked it up and glanced at the name.
"Oooooh! Kiwi! I love kiwi," she said, picking up the vial and peering at it closer.
By now Olivia had heard the many voices coming from the front of her shop and came to investigate. Noticing Carrie again she smiled and waved, "Hello! Back again I see..." She murmured, also giving Polly a smile, "Hello, Pollux."
Ment looked over at his 'mother' and stuck his tongue out at her, "Polly's Mommy and her friend are here to look around! ISN'T IT EXCITING!?" He boomed, a small devilish grin on his face and he shook in place form the overwhelming amount of happy he was currently feeling.
"'Lo, Olivia," Carrie smiled and waved, and then thought for a rather quiet moment, "Hey...do these all turn into kids? I mean...has every oil you've sold?"
"Mommy says she doesn't want 'nother kid, though. I kinda wanna little brother 'r sister," Polly said, clearly upset by this notion. Not that his mommy wasn't awesome company, it's just that sometimes you needed someone to go shopping with who wasn't completely apathetic.
Evie half-turned her head, listening uninvited to the conversation, the vial of kiwi oil still in her hands. If it was just a one-in-one hundred kind of deal, she supposed she could buy it without worrying over the consequences.
"I....I really don't know." Olivia admitted, scratching the back of her head. "I've sold a lot recently, only a few people have stepped forward saying their oils have turned into children...I honestly am not sure." She murmured looking over at Ment and Polly once more. "I have been trying to find who is responsible though....With no luck, but I've been trying."
Olivia sighed, rubbing the back of her neck. She assumed business was going to begin to slow dramatically with the news that her oils spouted children.
"Really? Would you bring them over so we can all play together?" Ment questioned, glimmers of hope in his eyes.
"Sure! Iffen I get--"
"Huh. I'll take this one, then. There's always a chance it won't be a kid, right?"
"--one." Polly beamed with delight. It might not be a little brother or sister...but it might be one!
Encouraged by the odds, Evie held up the vial to exhibit to anyone bothering to watch.
"I do believe I shall be purchasing this," she said eloquently to anyone listening. "Kiwi makes me happy inside."
She dug out her wallet, ignoring that oft-abused practical side of her mind that was currently shrieking about how she was spending her food money for the week on scented oil.
"Yes. Always the chance." Olivia smiled, delighted when she heard both girls would be buying something. Yes! She shrieked in her mind, I'll have enough money this week to buy that fancy curling iron I saw! Now more curlers for my hair! Olivia made her way over to the cash register to ring them up, ignoring the nagging thoughts in her mind about how she's a sucker for money and the like.
Ment smiled, but kept his mouth shut when the two proclaimed their buying intentions. He'd be scaring away some business by calling the oils his brothers and sisters and wishing people well with their new babies. Olivia didn't want this anymore, so she promised to give him an allowance if he'd kept his mouth shut. This pleased Ment...As he could now buy pretty bowties for his hair...
Carrie laughed at Evie's usual contradiction in speech and nudged the older girl out of the way.
"You need that to nourish your frail mortal form," she said matter-of-factly, "Imma buy it for you, Art Student. Consider it a late birthday present. Like...really late." She went to the cash register and hurriedly started digging through her pockets, trying to find the proper amount of money before Evie could object.
"But-!"
Evie made to protest, mouth opening, finger pointing sternly, and even putting her free hand on her hip, but then the urge just died. Ah well.
"Sneak," she said in mock accusation, putting her feeble collection of bills back into a wallet that was more rubber bands and duct tape than leather.
Olivia smiled at ths, finding the exchange a nice refreshment between people than what she was used to in these parts. Pushing a few buttons on her cash register she brang up their total. "Together that comes to fifty-five pieces."
Ment grabbed Polly's hand in excitement and and swung it back and forth with joy. "You should stop over more! It's so boring here!!" He put on his display of melodrama and clung to his friend in a pleaing position. "Come back to see me sometime..."
"Mmkay," Carrie nodded and shelled out the appropriate amount of moolah She turned then and smiled down to the boys. So cute.
"Okay!" Polly exclaimed excitedly and placed a friendly kiss atop Ment's head, "I will. I promise!"
He then leaned in close and whispered.
"And I'll bring my new baby sister or brother in as soon as he's born.
Poking at her newly purchased oil, Evie pushed her mouth to one side. It WAS kiwi, after all. The risk of finding an oil-child was well worth the momentary enjoyment of awesome kiwi-smell.

2. The Lighting
Carrie returned home with Polly in one arm and a script and schedule in the other. She was positively bubbling over with excitement.
"So. How should we celebrate?"
"Let's get ice cream!"
"Pssssh," Carrie said with a roll of her eyes as she put Polly down on the kitchen table, "I can do you one better. We're gonna make ice cream."
"You can make ice cream?!"
"Indeed you can!"
With a cheer and a bounce, Polly hugged his mother around the legs. Carrie gave him an affectionate pat on the head and began digging around for the proper ice cream ingredients. While assembling the churn, however, she spotted Polly trying to be all ninja-like and light up the new oil. She ignored it, smiling and inhaling deeply as the not-quite-sure-if-you-like-it-or-not scent floated into the kitchen.
"Okay. So. First..."

3. The Awakening
"Mommyyyy...is it done yet?!"
"I dunno, honey. It takes a while."
Neither of the pair had noticed the odd change in the oil's smoke, having been, for the last few hours, completely and utterly preoccupied. First came the making, then came the cleanup, and now Carrie was busy kicking cans filled with salt and ice (with the ice cream itself in a bag within) back and forth between herself and her son. More time passed. Hours. Finally, Carrie simply picked up the cans and moved to the kitchen. Polly, excited, followed.
The cans were opened and the smaller canisters containing the ice cream washed of salt. Carrie hesitantly popped open one of the tops...ahh. Perfect. The pair returned to the living room then, carrying their little containers (strawberry for Polly, pumpkin for Carrie) and ready to have a lazy night watching TV.
Instead, they saw the living room filling with...fog. Smoke. Something unpleasantly chilly and damp. Carrie was the one brave enough to adventure closer, following the mist from its thinnest to thickest points, finding that it was coming from...the oil?!
The fog thickened deeper and deeper, seeming to fill the whole house. It didn't smell bad at all, but there was an undeniable feeling of fear permeating the stuff. Carrie sat on the couch, waiting, and Polly sat beside her, oddly excited and terrified at the same time. Clearly he was going to get a new sibling!
It was not soon after that something began to emerge from the mist, smiling slightly. A young girl. Tan skin. Multiple arms.
"Good evening," she smiled, taking a light bow.
Carrie gaped in surprise.
"Um...hi. ...Lorelei?" She'd pulled the name out of the air, remembering vaguely her mother's friend's daughter.
The girl simply nodded.
"Oooooh~" Polly cooed.
