Morbid Nightmares

Okay. Well... I started my period somewhere around 4-5 years ago. So, this shouldn't be normal right?
Well, I go for months without my period, and when I get it, it lasts for 1-3 weeks. Sometimes it's heavy, but most of the time it's light.
My mom says if I go to the doctor, all they'll do is give me birth control to control it. But I don't want to do that. So, I was just wondering.. will my abnormal periods cause a problem later? Is it possible it may affect my chances of conceiving a child?

A doctor would not just throw some birth control pills at you and send you on your way. The doctor would look at you and see if there is anything that is causing this problem, any health concerns and the like. If you have a gynecological health issue that is causing these very irregular periods, it is possible that the health issue could cause problems or infertility, but the abnormal periods themselves should not cause any problems. Abnormal periods can sometimes make it a bit more difficult to conceive just because it's difficult for the woman to try to track when she is ovulating.

If the doctor says everything looks healthy and all right and suggests birth control pills just to make your periods easier on you, it's entirely up to you whether you want to be on the pills. The doctor can't make you go on them. He or she might just suggest them when discussing your options with you.

I think it is certainly worth going to the doctor to get looked at to be on the safe side. Sometimes irregular periods are no big deal and not really caused by anything in particular. Other times it is caused by something a bit more serious. It might be something the doctor can take care of such as an infection. So it's even possible that you wouldn't have to live with abnormal periods or go on birth control! You won't know until you have a doctor tell you what is going on, however.

Okay, thank you.
I'm kind of self-concious though.. and I don't like the thought of someone checking me out. >_<

I don't know of anyone who enjoys getting a pap smear. It's pretty weird and awkward no matter what for most people. However, it doesn't hurt for most people, and it's over with pretty fast. They've seen everything before, so it's not like anything that you have is going to shock, amaze, or disgust them. They've seen people who shave, people who trim, and people who leave it all alone, so just do whatever you normally do. Personally, I leave all of my body hair alone, so I go in with pubic hair and leg hair fully intact. Just make sure you take a shower right before you go. Also, if you get your period, reschedule. They want to look at you when you're not bleeding (unless your problem is that you never stop bleeding, I suppose!).
