Yes, it is.

It makes me think of a manga series that I have been reading.

The Demon Ororon>>spoiler/summary>>

There is a half-angel, half-mortal girl who lives alone, and comes upon the demon king one rainy day. She helps him, not knowing who or what he is, and lets him recover in her house. Once he recovers, he offers to grant her one wish--and this lonely girl asks him to stay with her forever. He agrees, to her suprise, and they start their life together.

Now, since this guy is the demon king, people are looking for him. Monsters, other demons, and even angels (yes, from heaven) are sent after him, seeking to essentially take his head back to hell for money (the angels would just take the head back to heaven for recognition). Chiaki (the angel girl) is abhorred by all of the killing that Ororon (the demon king) is forced to do because of these attacks. Other attacks follow, some on Chiaki also because she is a 'child of the fallen' and 'must' be killed.

All sorts of other attacks follow, and even the peaceful Chiaki lets loose some unknown powers of destruction when she is scared. The more the fights go on, the more we learn about Ororon, and how he has had to kill to protect himself since he was 11 (and he's 123 during the manga) and how he hated that that was the way things had to be. He just wanted to live with Chiaki, in a peaceful, normal life.

I am getting to a point, I promise you.

Both of these characters wonder during the book--how could God create a world filled with so much hate and suffering? How could his 'angels' kill the things that we love? Why did there have to be so much fighting? Where was God in all of this?

Essentially, at the end of the book, Ororon dies, and Chiaki lives on with the friends she gained during their fights. And that's it. The whole thing--basically it was a doomed love, they suffered, and they didn't get a happy ending.

I think that they author was saying the same thing as Voltaire...life is full of hardships, we don't understand it, and then comes death.

The Headless Waltz
By:Voltaire
As above, so below, place your bets
Which way the head will roll
Made in your image we are at least
As twisted and mean as thee
'Fore your eyes, what a curious site
Your children have turned on you
And you say, you don't sleep well at night
Well, we'll take care of that for you.

Belle Marie Antoinette
"Love the pearls!"
They'll make a great tourniquet
Never did as you should and you claim
It was all for our veryown good
'Twas a lie, a magnificent lie
Now, your subjects have turned on you
And you claim you had lots on your mind
Well, we'll take care of that for you.

Get that damn thing off her neck
I'm the head of the board now I'm bored of her head
Sharpen up the blade boys, what are you waiting for?
Here's where we all get a head!
Wipe that damn smile off your face
Or we'll lop it off clean with our new guillotine
Sharpen up the blade boys, what are you waiting for?
Here's where we all get a head!

All my troubles, all my pain
Stems from this thing that you call a "brain"
Be my guest, sever me from the source
Of all my agony
What a shame, I've forgotten my name
Without the use of my brain and
"My, bet I'll sleep well tonight!"
Without this head of mine.

Get this damn thing off my neck
I'm the head of the board now I'm bored of my head
Sharpen up the blade boys, what are you waiting for?
Here's where we all get ahead!
Wipe that damn smile off your face
Or we'll lop it off clean with our new guillotine
Sharpen up the blade boys, what are you waiting for?
Bells are now tolling, soon heads will be rolling...

Please Sir, for me, Sir,
Won't you see if you see, Sir?
Oh dear, I dread
I seem to have lost my head
I think I left it about
It fell to the ground
And I kicked it around
Has anyone seen, no need to be mean,
My bloody, fat, ugly head?
Please Miss, for me, Sis,
Won't you see if you see, Sis
It's got black hair
And it's kickin' about in the square
I'm really not totally sure but
I think that it might have rolled into the sewer.
Has anyone seen, no need to be mean,
My bloody, fat, ugly head?

Voltaire rocketh my sockeths!!!
