Purchase

Sommer ran her hand through her short hair, exhaling softly. How had she been talked into this again? Oh right, Mrs. Howards had talked her into it. The lady is nice, giving Sommer a job in her shop, making her a manager off the bat, and letting her live in the apartment upstairs. And that the first day they met. For the longest time Sommer had believed the woman to be plain insane, or some kind of phsyco murderer. Who else treated a complete stranger that way?

But over time she got to know the woman, and Sommer decided that she just was a kind old lady. And Sommer had promised herself that she would do what it took to make sure the coffee shop Mrs. Howards ran would work smoothly. As a result she had been working long ours, every day, until Mrs. Howards had forced her to take a day off. And here she was, figuring out what to do.

“Shopping sounded like a good idea... but should I really spend the money?”

It wasn’t like she needed anything. She had clothes, food, and plenty of reading material in her apartment. “I guess I just go back home and curl up with a book.”

But before she could simply turn around and call the day wasted, Sommer spotted something that roused her interest. “An incense store?” She moved closer to have a better look. “Well that would be nice, I need something to bring some life to the apartment.”

Forgotten was the idea of going home and Sommer entered the store, immediately noting the mix of different scents in the air. Right away Sommer fell in love with this place, and if the prices turned out right she was sure she would frequent this place more often. “Hello?” She kept her voice low, not wanting to startle anyone, but as no one offered a reply she simply moved to browse.

The selection was amazing, there were the typical incense oils, like Vanilla or Orange. Sommer even spotted some she hadn’t even heard of before. “They must be unique to this place...”

It was then that she spotted a scent she hadn’t seen often. “Blueberry? That’s not something you find every day.”

Sommer picked up the incense taking a tentative sniff. It smelled sweet, but not heavily so, and Sommer was immediately reminded of back home. I like this, but can I afford to spend money like that?

She was startled out of her thoughts when she heard the shop keeper arrive, which made up Sommer’s mind. She couldn’t just simply walk out without buying anything, and she really did like the blueberry scent. So she took it, along with a burner, since she didn’t have one yet, to the counter to be rung up.

Not even five minutes later Sommer found herself outside the shop again, her purchase wrapped and bagged safely in her right hand. “Well I guess the day wasn’t a total waste after all. At least now I have something to remind me of home, I hadn’t realized how much I have missed it.”

Taking the familiar path back to her apartment she pondered to where she would set up the burner. It would be nice for her next day off.

The Lighting

The walk home from Solace Scents hadn’t been long, but Sommer was glad to finally be home. Here she could relax, something that she had problems with when among other people. “Home sweet home.... away from home.”

Her face fell a little. This was the second time in just one day she had thought about her family with negative thoughts. She couldn’t let herself get into that kind of loop. She was here to proof to herself that she could do whatever she wanted, and to live a little before she would return and take over the family business. It was a gift her grandparents had given her, and she would take full advantage of it.

With that thought firmly locked in mind Sommer entered the living room, setting down the bag with her precious purchase. She was glad now, that she had put the money into the burner and oil. It would make this apartment a bit more her own.

With great care Sommer unpacked the burner and oil, setting it aside where it couldn’t fall off the counter and be damaged. “Now where should I put this...”

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!

Sommer started badly, not used to hearing her phone ring. She hadn’t had time yet to make friends with anyone, so it could only mean one thing, something was wrong at the shop. Only reluctantly did she pick up. “Hello?”

She leaned against the counter, listening to the girl on the other end of the line. “No, no don’t do anything. I’ll be right down.”

With a sigh she hung up, looking at the little burner. “I guess this will have to wait till later.”

----------

It was much later in the day when Sommer finally returned again, another ‘catastrophy’ prevented. “One would think they could figure out how to reset a coffee maker.” But apparently the big printed instructions on the side of the machine had just been too difficult to follow. But with the shop closed for the day Sommer finally had the chance to unwind, until the same game started over again the following day. But for now all she wanted to do was get some food, then get her book, light the burner and simply laze the rest of the evening away. In that order.

Dinner was a quick affair. A microwave meal was quick to prepare and even simpler to clean up. And not long after Sommer moved to the living room, carrying the incense and burner with her. The book she was currently reading was already on the small coffee table.

After settling comfortably on the couch, Sommer opened the scented oil carefully, not wanting to spill any of it. Immediately she could smell the heavy scent of blueberry, and she smiled, pouring some of the liquid into the glass top of the burner. Once lit, Sommer was surprised that the scent spread quickly, filling the whole room with a comfortable warmth too. She inhaled deeply closing her eyes. In her thoughts she was back in her grandmothers kitchen, baking blueberry cakes with her. She remembered how she would sneak bites of the sweet and tart berries, only realizing in later years that her grandmother had always known.

Sommer smiled at the memories, good ones this time. “Definitely a good purchase.”

She opened her eyes slowly, intending to get to her reading now. She only had a few chapters left after all. But when she moved to get the book she blinked. “What in the world?”

Looking at the soft tendrils of smoke emitting from the burner Sommer thought she was going crazy. Usually smoke would rise straight up, as it was natural for warm air to rise while cool air would push down. But her burner wasn’t like that at all, it seemed like... almost like the smoke was being wafted aside, like leaves would move as a soft breeze drifts through a forest.

Sommer frowned, and licked her finger, trying to feel if there was a draft coming from somewhere. She didn’t remember opening a window anywhere that she could have forgotten about. And she couldn’t feel any current against her dampened skin. How strange.

Keeping her eyes on the burner a moment longer Sommer finally took up her book. But reading didn’t come easy that night. Her eyes kept going back to the burner, to see if her mind had played a trick on her earlier. But the smoke kept drifting aside, not once simply rising straight up. But it didn’t seem to be a concern, since Sommer couldn’t see her apartment go up in flames just because the smoke was acting strangely.

“You just are a special little burner, aren’t you?”
