Poetical Rain

Kalei trilled at his beautiful desert wind, accepting her challenge to try and keep up. The male could, and would, match pace, and try to impress her with much, much more. He had never before been asked to display any sort of aerial dance, and yet he somehow already knew what to do. And the griffin also knew that he had to try, unless he let down the lovely one urging him on. No, he couldn't fail!

Pushing his wings out to their fullest length, the male slowly barrel-rolled back into a normal flying position, and with a few pumps of his extended wings, was soaring below, but just ahead of, Ma'at once more. Determined now, the male forged on ahead, gaining 'ground' inch by inch, until he was far enough ahead that he could begin his flourish.

Tucking in his wings with a sudden snap, the brown creature began to dive for the ground, spinning into a tight roll. Without loosing speed - perhaps gaining it because of his closed position - Kalei leaped back up into the sky after his dizzying descent, cresting over Ma'at in order to take a moment to whistle lovingly at her. It was in invitation too, to watch and follow. But he had to be careful too, in case she flew off in another direction. He would have to pursue!

The flight took them well above and beyond the wooded area of Ma'at's home. As the pair continued their dance, the courting male was the one dipping, swerving, rising, and diving around his partner, enticing her to accept him and his promise of companionship. Not only was he flying, he was fighting; it was a battle to prove he was worthy, and even as his body worked to make those clear blue eyes see, his voice was trilling soft love-notes to her, pleading and inviting at the same time.

At times, he would fly in close to touch wings, and occasionally a tail would entwine itself in another. But each time he moved in, the sandy goddess would brush him off - he still had much to prove.

Ma'at coo'd in response to his little love songs, occasionally letting out an impressed trill at some feat he performed. However, though she swooped in close to him often, their physical contact was brief, few-and-far between. She enjoyed staying juuust out of his reach, hearing those calls of longing that so made her want to accept him. The female pondered it very few moments, begging her senses to let her have him. They refused. Not yet, they said. He hadn't impressed her enough for instinct to allow her to do so.

He was so handsome, with those glowing silvery feathers and that rich brown that made up the rest of him. She trilled and made soft clicking noises, conveying her constant affection for him..and urging him on at the same time. They were both enticing one another, it seemed. Kalei was doing an excellent job at keeping her attention, darting this way and that, making her sky-blue eyes delight in all the movement. He was, in all reality, an impressive male. And he thought she was impressive enough to put all this effort into winning her as his mate. That warmed her, and made her passionately call out to him even more.

His acrobatics became more intense. He was making dangerous dives and corkscrews that encircled her body, making her clack her beak in delight. Ma'at watched as her Kalei showed off those feathers in flashing displays of color..and eventually, with one last dive and swoop in front of her, the female's trills took on a slightly different note. It was gentle, calming. She soared high into the air, the white bits on her wings and ears and tail momentarily illuminating her entire body in a soft white light, before slowly descending to fly beside him, coo'ing affectionately. She was prepared for him, accepting his display as a dazzling act that she could no longer deny. Now, it was time for both of them to act. She reached out to run her beak through a few of his feathers, before speaking for the first time since she first ascended into the air.

"You did well, Kalei." the desert-hued griffin crooned, giving him a content smile.

Kalei felt slight weariness settling in as that moonlit vision flew over him and then moved in to fly beside him. He had worked so hard to impress her, a task that even his extensive flying experience with Deste could only partially prepare him for. Despite weariness, though, he was excited. She had accepted him! That beautiful, untameable lady of the sands found him worthy enough to stay at her side. Actually, he felt rather proud. And surprised. And overjoyed. And...a lot of things.

The earth-toned griffin trilled lovingly in response to her praise, feeling his heart flutter a little bit when she ran her beak through his wing. He returned the gesture by entwining their tails, and by gazing into those eyes that so resembled the sky. This was his best friend. Now, she was that and more. Or...she would be, once this ritual was completely finished. The difficult part was over with, but now the part that made him a little nervous had to be done. He had earned it, after all.

Nervousness melted away when he thought of what it meant. Ma'at would be his mate. They would be together for the rest of their lives. A loving happiness filled him at that thought, one that he conveyed to her by trilling softly and running his beak through her feathers. It was time to create a bond even stronger than their friendship.

Kalei led her higher and higher into the sky, the two griffins slowly circling around each other and calling out with longing to the other. They stood against the moon, letting instinct guide them into flying together and clasping talons. Time paused as they turned, putting the ultimate trust in one another...and fell.

Spiralling downward, Kalei felt more clear minded than he ever had. He looked straight at Ma'at, and she at him. Love and trust shone out of her light-blue eyes, and his own reflected the same thing. This was so..natural, because the two griffins simply belonged together. This was what they were meant to do, create the bond of lifemate with one another, sealing what they had always known as an affection that would never be interrupted. And the male with the gleaming silvery feathers knew that it would be a fun ride.

Moments before they would have been unable to pull out of the decent, the desert goddess and the earth-hued knight pulled out of the dive, pulling apart and flying in seperate directions...but only for a moment. In that moment, Ma'at flew back down to earth, landing gently on her hind legs and trotting to a stop. Kalei joined her, silently preening and rubbing the feathers at her neck with his head. Nothing needed to be said, really. There weren't words to describe his long-awaited contentment at this moment.

He did, however, think of one thing to say. One humorous thought..."Iris and Deste are going to be surprised when they get home, don't you think?"
