There is a lot of theories out there about the baby. So let's explore the possiblities.
arrow There was a baby and Lex drugged Lana for experimentation. arrow There was never a baby; Lex faked the entire thing to get Lana to marry him. arrow Lex removed the baby from Lana and is growing it in 33.1.
Did Lex intentionally lose the baby? I mean he already has Lana so would there be a use for the baby now? He watched closely in the first scene to make sure she drank the sparkling cider before he did. And he checked his watch right before he went into their room which could mean he knew that Lana would have complications right then.
At the end however, he was genuinely sad though. He might be sad that he lost the baby or that he caused this much pain towards Lana by messing it up. If there was never a baby, then why did he have a dream about it in Promise or have a baby room made. Plus his expression in Static shows that he didn't know about it until Lana told him.
However, Lex is an evil man who is desperate to hold on to the one thing that can never have. He could have staged everything. The possibility can't be ruled out entirely.
So, what do you think about the subject? It is obviously a controversial topic.
Oh, please refrain from saying that it is Clark's baby. Seeing that they didn't do anything of the sort since Mortal/Hidden in season 5. Anyways, I don't think that Lex would want his child being Clark's. I am going to rule it out.

I don't know. If there were no baby, then why did he burn the picture?

Could have been a picture of someone else's baby. I mean at that stage they all look the same pretty much. No one knows for sure what Lex and Lana's baby looks like.

I've had all of those theories in my head since that episode, but I'm going to have to rule out arrow 2 because I don't care what drugs or experimentation you do, a mother feels the bond with their child and should know for sure if their pregnant or not. I think Lana had that feeling as much as it's a distasteful thought that she even slept with Lex. Anyway, I've moved past that.
So basically, I'd say Lex drugged Lana so that he could remove the Fetus, but as to his plans for it- only God knows. Or the producers in this case. I think he even said something about the drink not harming the baby before he gave it to Lana. A subtle foreshadowing. Then there is the fact that he waited way too long to call for help for someone you supposedly love. (I mean he watches her fall unconscious, observes her face for a few seconds and then calls for help) stare
Which leads to the conclusion that Lex is corrupt (which we all know btw) and everything he touches dies or gets hurt. In Literary terms, he's a tragic hero- meaning he has a flaw that he can do nothing about and only watch it lead to his demise.
Sad but true.

I'd like to think the baby is still alive somewhere and that Lex's remorse was not at loosing/killing the baby, but at taking the baby away from Lana, causing her so much pain and lying to the woman he "loves".
I pose a question: As much as Lex loved Lilian, do you think he's doing this to Lana because subconsciously he's trying to turn her INTO Lilian, or a form of Lilian?

His mom had a different condition. Lillian was depressed after the baby was born, she didn't want to even look at her baby so I don't know exactly how this would be the same.
I was yelling at Lex like why aren't you getting help like now?!! But when he actually did yell for help, it was more convincing, like he actually was concerned for her. Then again I always give Lexana the benefit of the doubt.

If he put a 33.1 baby in her, and then gave her 'poison', there's no telling what effect that may have on it. So perhaps after he saw her go unconcious, he was worried what would happen to her.
Or maybe this whole plot is super ******** lame.

confused I think as far as theories go, the Luthor baby is a bit of all 3... (with the exception of it never existing) neutral Lex needed a security blanket, so that Lana would marry him and that baby was it... Now that she married him, He doesn't rightly need the baby anymore rolleyes . So off to 33.1 goes the freak baby when it's done incubating inside Lana, for expirementation to see if it's a viable proto type of whatever super solder Oliver told Clark about in 'Justice'...
