So, I decided to take on that 100 themes thing. Hoo boy. I've also decided (to challenge myself more) to do them in order. So here, I give you my Introduction! XD COnsidering I did the "photo" with no references of myself, I think it came out pretty good.

Things I know are wonky:
The nose (I made it too short, and thus to compensate I have a really long upper lip. Monkylips! gonk )
The shading/lighting
The hair (it makes her head shape weird at the back)
And how her neck connects... it looks off to me.
And the shading on the eyes is crap.

Other than that: C&C? I would especially like pointers on how to fix the nose, and maybe getting an angrier expression... >>;

Thanks!

Pretty decent, but there's a few things with what you said I wanna comment on.

Yes, the nose is to short, but the lips are fine in size and shape, move them a little to the right and they'll be perfect. The eyes aren't even either, raise the left one or lower the right.(I think it's the eye on our right that's bothering me more). By fixing these things, the nose will look fine. Hoenstly, most proffesional portraitists screw up the length of the nose. It's a really common mistake, that will be barely obvious. (I always draw my noses to short, even when using a refrence)

To make yourself angrier, try narrowing the eyes and have the top slant inward. Glare into a mirror to see this effect. It'll help strengthen the furrowed brow you already have going. (Which is perfect)

Always always always use a refrence when doing portraits, especially self. When attempting realism, people always idealize and draw the misconceptions of shapes. Self portraits are hard because it's hard to face the reality of your own imperfections and put them down. While I was doing my last self-portrait, I realized I have a very crooked smile. I wasn't happy, even though my boyfriend laughed and said it made me cuter.

For lighting and shading, try actually feeling the planes of your face to translate the forms better. (Don't diss it, it works)

It's a really nice attempt, especially unreffed. I've seen many drawings hundreds of times worse that actually had reffrences. I'm actually having trouble believing you didn't do this from a photo or mirror. The shapes of the features are nearly perfect and individual. It's a really nice drawing.

This is insanely helpful! 3nodding Thank you so much!
I think the reason it turned out so well without a ref is that I always use myself as a model for practicing realism anyway... so I've got it pretty well ingrained in my head what I look like. (The eyes are a tad idealized though, I admit)
