[I got permission for this thread. 3nodding ]

For every lifestyle or subculture there is a 'scene', and the GLBT scene is one of the best known scenes around. There are people who love it -- the pride parades, the clubs, the events, the camraderie; there are people who hate it -- the elitism, the prejudice, the snobbery. Good things and bad things come when a whole bunch of people with similar beliefs group together, and the GLBT scene is no exception. My question to everyone is, what do you think? Is the scene innately good or bad?

There are some things to consider before making a choice one way or the other. A lot of people really can't feel comfortable with their sexuality without that sense of camraderie. But, on the other hand, there are some GLBT communities that are very particular about who 'belongs' and who doesn't. There are many gay people who look down on bisexuals -- actually, often, bisexuality is the one thing that the majority of homosexuals and heterosexuals agree on. Both dislike bisexuals. Another issue is the alarming amount of homosexual men who hate lesbians and vice versa. There eventually comes a point where the GLBT community is practically split 4 ways, and nobody likes anybody else.

And what of pride parades? What would the reaction be if there was a straight pride parade? It wouldn't be tolerated... it would be seen as biggotry. Is it right to flash our sexuality about like a badge, when those belonging to other factions aren't allowed? Or is that something that should be done, to help show the world that 'we're here, we're queer', and all that?

Basically, my reason for this thread is to see what people think about the scene, and about gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered pride. Is it necessary, or is it ridiculous? I'd like to know what others think of this issue.

In general I think that functions are currently needed to make the general populous aware of how many people out there are not straight. However, I also think that people who wave their sexuality around like a badge (I think that's how you phrased it) only give those of us who prefer to be more descreet a bad name. The Gay Pride parades don't seem to help homosexuals when the people participating act like fools.

Ultimately, I guess the point I'm attempting to make at this early hour of the morning is that the functions can be both good and bad depending on how they are run and I'm not against anything that is helpful. 3nodding

I think, taking off from where Fisshu was, that Gay Pride Parades and things of that nature in their current state only make the gay population seem like a bunch of...forgive me...Fruit loops( xp ). Yet if they came to show more than just the people who act like that then maybe people wouldn't see just that side of the matter and gays might be accepted more by society, ect. ....ummmm, yeah I think that's what I mean. sweatdrop
