It's A Bad, Bad World
Back in one of the many dawns of time, Tiamat and Apsu were consorts, the saltwater and freshwater whose union gave birth to perhaps the most ancient recorded pantheon. Tiamat had given birth to gods, who in turn gave birth to more gods, and at a certain point all the noise made by these gods living on Tiamat’s body became too much for Apsu to bear. He threatened to kill their children, but Tiamat rebuked him. However, fearful of the possibility, the gods made the first strike – magic spells allowed them to slay Apsu and flee, building temples of their own. Together, they were called the Anunnaki, and for a long time there was hardly a sign they had ever been save for the corpse of Apsu. A god began to rise through the ranks of the Annunaki. He was young and clever, powerful and arrogant. His name was Marduk, and he wished to rule the world. But there never seemed to be the right opportunity to take the reins…
Time passed, and Tiamat brooded. She had defended her children, and even so they had gone too far and murdered her dear Apsu. The emptiness of loss transformed into rage and revenge. She would finish what Apsu should have done, destroy them all, and start anew with another. But even so, there would be no others quite like Apsu, no love as true for her ever again.
Tiamat gathered together an army of fearsome monsters born of her womb, from scorpion-men to dragons. Several of the gods joined her side, though the rest were adamant in defending themselves from Tiamat’s wrath. Diplomacy failed, leaving war the only option. Marduk, portraying himself as a young and inexperienced god with a lot of luck, was soon heralded as the champion against Tiamat’s choice of Quingu. Even with the power of the tablet of destinies on his side, Quingu failed in battle, and the tablet was stolen away by the gods. Her armies were decimated, as Marduk made short work of them. He wielded strange weapons, but Tiamat believed her own powers over the seas of chaos were more powerful.
Marduk threw the winds at her. A petty magic indeed! Was this weakling really the champion of the gods? Opening her mouth wide, she swallowed the wind itself. But it was all the distraction Marduk needed to finish the job. He cut her in two, desecrating her remains by using them to build a world of his own, and populating it with people he made by mixing Apsu’s blood into the earth, a parody of Tiamat’s creation sorcery.
And it all went bad from there, but there was nothing Tiamat could have done. And no one else dared to stand in Marduk’s way.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baron_Samedi
- Baron Samedi is a Loa (dangerous but human-friendly voodou spirit) - 'Samedi' means 'Saturday' in French, though there are alternate etymologies offered. So his name is Baron Saturday (that's when he parties). - He is usually depicted with a white top hat, black tuxedo, dark glasses, and cotton plugs in the nostrils, as if to resemble a corpse dressed and prepared for burial in the Haitian style. He has a white, frequently skull-like face (or actually has a skull for a face) and speaks in a nasal voice. -A huge skeleton dressed in a dark coat or cape with a top hat and spade, the Baron is the infamous master of the dead who escorts their souls from the graveyard to the underworld. - The Baron does not concern himself with corpses - he can enter the realm of the living and force people to do his terrible bidding. - He is notorious for his outrageous behavior, swearing continuously and making filthy jokes to the other spirits. He is married to another powerful spirit known as Mama Brigitte, but often chases after mortal women. He loves smoking and drinking and is rarely seen without a cigar in his mouth or a glass of rum in his bony fingers. - When someone dies he digs their grave and greets their soul after they have been buried, leading them to the underworld. He also ensures all corpses rot in the ground to stop any soul being brought back as a brainless zombie. The Baron has a legion of spirits under his control. These lesser spirits, all dressed like the Baron and all are as rude and crude as their master. They help carry the dead to the underworld. - Baron Samedi can usually be found at the crossroad between the worlds of the living and the dead. - As well as being master of the dead, he is also a giver of life. He can cure any mortal of any disease or wound, if he thinks it is worth while. His powers are especially great when it comes to voodoo curses and black magic. Even if somebody has been inflicted by a hex which brings them to the verge of death, they will not die if the Baron refuses to dig their grave. So long as this mighty spirit keeps them out of the ground they are safe. What he demands in return depends on his mood. Sometimes he is content with his followers wearing black, white or purple clothes or using sacred objects; he may simply ask for a small gift of cigars, rum, black coffee, grilled peanuts or bread. But sometimes the Baron asks for a voodoo ceremony to help him cross over into this world - a high-risk time for anyone wanting his help. Baron Samedi is one of the few Voodoo spirits that can cross from the realm of the dead to the realm of the living without a ritual - but as it is a draining process he rarely does. - If he is in a good mood he may grant his followers ever lasting life, but if he is in a bad mood he may dig their graves too soon and bury them alive or bring them back as a mindless zombie.

I Want A Girl Who Knows What's Best Name: Zahra Gender: Female Mythbase: Tiamat (Babylonian) Link to a source on the mythbase: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiamat http://www.cresourcei.org/enumaelish.htmlAppearance: Zahra appears to be made entirely of halite, or salt crystal, although honestly I wouldn't lick her if I were you, she was probably just dumpster-diving. Her body is fairly delicate in the face of physical damage. She is semi-transparent, with crystals growing in clumps from several places on her body (forehead, ears, elbows, ankles, spine, length of tail, end of tail). Her tail is long and reptilian, with the vague appearance of scales etched in it, and ending in a burst of crystals. She also sports . Her blood is saline, literally salt water. Her orbs eyes are a piercing blue in contrast to her delicate appearance. Zahra has extremely long hair that has the appearance of thin crystal filaments. She tends to keep it braided or tied up so that it doesn't keep getting blown in her face or dragging through anything dirty. Khaldun has yet to convince her to chop it off to a more reasonable and inconspicuous length, as she has pointed out that there is not a whole lot else about her that would be inconspicuous even without the hair. Powers: Zahra’s powers will have to do with children, but not the conventional kind. Brainchildren - ideas, imagination, inspiration. Zahra will be able to give temporary life to an idea that would otherwise be restricted to someone’s mind alone. Initially they would have to be her own ideas, but as her powers increase she would be able to tap into the shared imaginations of others. In order to bring an idea to life, she must interact with it, so it’s easiest to pull it from the arts (writing, art, music, speech) rather than directly from someone’s mind, as minds are dangerous places to poke around. The larger and more detailed the idea, the more difficult it will be to call up to invoke and maintain its life. So, for instance, bringing a drawing of a fish to life would be far easier and longer-lasting than trying to bring to life a painting of an entire coral reef, and the reef in turn would be easier than attempting to conjure up an entire imaginary ocean into reality (the very latter is strictly impossible for her to do, but I think you get the idea.) Nonliving things could be called up in illusion form, but she imagines to life a rock, it will only sit there and be a rock for as long as she calls it up. If she calls into existence a weapon, it requires full concentration on her part to be able to wield it in reality, and can be gone in a puff of smoke with the slightest distraction. Zahra is constantly needing knowledge if she wants to create something realistic – without a proper understanding of swords, Zahra would not be able to imagine into existence key features that someone wielding a real-life sword doesn’t have to think about or know about to cut someone to pieces with it. This power is separate from dreams – Zahra finds them to be too fleeting to make anything of, and requires more concentrated information when she isn’t conjuring something from her own thoughts. There are dangers to this power – calling into life a being with its own agenda and personality means there is always a danger even from her own creations. Without the powers of Tiamat, the imaginary beings can cause physical or psychological harm to Zahra as much as to anyone else. The creatures are only temporary but the damage they inflict doesn’t disappear with them. This is the ultimate “be careful what you wish for”. In addition to this illusory creature summoning, Zahra has the ability to cast mild sensory illusions. Temperature can seem to rise or fall to an impossible degree, light can seem to disappear or grow bright, etc. Zahra would be able to trick an average human’s basic senses if they didn’t know better, by tweaking . This is a mostly involuntary power, strongly tied to her emotional state. Personality: Zahra is a passionate young woman who is quick to emotion, especially when things don't go her way. While not spoiled per se, she has had no guiding parent figure in her life to speak of and set her moral compass to that of her guardian, an urchin-turned-conman who uses her innate powers to cheat people out of money. Because she is always on the run from authorities, she has developed a bit of a paranoid streak herself. Despite her rough nature, she absorbs stories and tall tales like a sponge, and loves to tell stories as much as hear them. Zahra tends to ask somewhat personal or blunt questions without realizing how tactless she sounds. Unlike her "brother", Zahra has managed to be partially literate in terms of reading (but not writing). As much as she likes plants, she seems to have a black thumb when it comes to growing them - and if there’s one thing she hates, it’s not being able to do something. Zahra tends to keep trying over and over till she gets it right, and if that still doesn’t happen, she’ll swear the thing off as "stupid" or "useless" or "I never liked it much anyway". Zahra has always felt a bit distanced from others, as her unusual appearance has made her suspicious in their minds. She is far better with children than adults. Pride is her weak point – she doesn’t back down from a challenge to her reputation, and reciprocates rude behavior back, which can sometimes lead to a very nasty cycle. Name: ??? Sidorov

Now, Do You Believe In The One Big Song? Name: Khaldun Lazarus Cilentani Nicknames: The Professional Prophet, Prophet, Khal, “You must have the wrong number” Species: Human Gender: Male Age: 27 Appearance: Khaldun is of Romani descent, with a somewhat café au lait skintone. His face is kept clean-shaven. Across the left side of his face are two jagged, intersecting scars which form an X over his left cheekbone. His eyes are a dark brown that is almost black, and usually half-lidded. He wears his hair in thick black dreadlocks that fall to the middle of his back, and are only loosely kept out of his face with red cloth wraps. Both ears have been haphazardly pierced and loaded up with gold earrings in what could only have been a bad decision in his youth. Average all around in the purely physical sense, Khaldun stands at 5’10”. He has a medium build, ambiguous in whether it is fat or muscle. His fashion sense is nothing short of garish, despite his vanity when it comes to his looks, and what he wears can vary widely in ways best described through Lovecraftian geometry. Occupation: Full-time self-styled “professional prophet” – if you’re willing to pay, he’s willing to talk to the gods for you and put in a good word. Whether they answer back, well, who can say? Part-time consultant and specialist in mythological, theological, and superstitious mishaps, with a buy-six-get-one-free special on bad luck reversal every Friday the 13th. Personality: Khaldun does not believe in anything, because his line of work has made a fact out of nearly everything there could be to believe. He’s seen a dragon, caught a unicorn (well not HIM, he got a woman to help him that time. REALLY.), exorcised a haunted laundromat, and even talks to the gods for a very nominal fee. Actually, scratch that Khaldun does not believe in anything; he believes in money. Though the world of myth, legend, and superstition is daunting, he faces it head-on and in the name of his next meager paycheck. Khaldun knows everything in life costs money – not prayers, or unicorns, or luck. Khaldun is definitely an eccentric. Though he means well, he does not have time to bother with frivolous things like “the law” and “social norms”. A lot of his line of work involves being in places where one is not supposed to be, so it pays not to worry. And if he wants to dress like he robbed a WWI veteran’s attic, he’s going to do it, and hell, he probably even LIKES the way it look, seeing as he’s a bit vain around mirrors. For some reason, no one ever asks where he gets his clothes, or why. He is always curious, often sticking his nose into business that does not concern him. Every book in his private collection of mythical and supernatural reference books has been read from cover to cover, three times minimum. He always, always, always has to know. IT’S GOING TO KEEP HIM UP ALL NIGHT IF HE DOESN’T FIND OUT. People (human or otherwise) are Khaldun’s favorite thing in the world. He’s extremely sociable and talkative, and is equally happy telling or listening to stories. He’s got a quick tongue and mind, able to improvise when necessary. Possibly the source of his charismatic demeanor is his remarkable memory for names and faces. And for those especially close to him, he will go to any lengths. Only problem is, Khaldun does have a tendency to be controlling. Once you’re his friend, it’s difficult to escape from the responsibilities it entails – generally in the way of gradually beginning to owe him a lot of favors. It’s rare for Khaldun to stop considering someone a friend even after a fight or a falling-out. Only when something extremely bad has happened does he withhold the friend status. Even Khaldun isn’t charming through and through, though. He has a possessive streak which makes it difficult for him to give up on trying to win over people he’s made a poor impression on (coming off as desperate or controlling behavior), and it’s rare to see him part with even an old useless trinket. Stubborn to the core, Khaldun sticks to his guns and 99.9% of the time refuses to admit he’s wrong even in the face of overwhelming evidence. There are always dark circles under his eyes – he rarely finds a good reason to go to sleep for a decent length of time, placing most everything else in his life ahead of maintaining a normal state of awareness. And while he’s especially good at living life in the moment and maneuvering on the spot, he’s got absolutely no long-term plans whatsoever. Ask him what he plans to do in a year’s time and you’ll get a momentary blank look followed by a bad joke, but never a real answer. -------------------------------------- (( And then I have an alt version depending XD This one is much more LC-oriented. ))
Name: Khaldun Cilentani
Nicknames: Khal, "that's the dirty swindler who took my money, officer!"
Species: Manbearpig
Gender: Male
Age: 27
Appearance:
Occupation: Professional cheat and hustler
Personality: Khaldun lives for challenges, and feels that money is no good if it didn't take a certain degree of effort and danger to get his hands on it. Because of this, he tends to be overconfident in his intelligence. And let's be honest, he isn't as smart as he thinks he is. Otherwise he wouldn't be a con-man for a living, for one thing. He prides himself in being able to read people, and is notorious for blackmailing people for extra cash, or simply to settle a score. Despite his impressive street smarts, Khaldun is illiterate, and does his best to hide that fact with varying degrees of success.
While Khaldun is perfectly capable of being polite and friendly toward others, he generally draws the line at being 'that guy I talked to at that party one time'. Over the years of his life, suspicion and outright paranoia have backed him into a dark corner, which he found to be prime real estate and now waits for metaphorical passerby with a crowbar. Having to interact with someone a lot, or even just longer than one hour tends to bring out the worst in him. In fact, Zahra is the only person he can handle being around.
He has raised Zahra like a little sister rather than a daughter, and at this point their psychological age gap is less than ten years apart. Khaldun rarely disciplines her, and in turn she only sometimes beats him up for doing something stupid and/or dangerous. This has turned out to make for two very impulsive, demanding, brash, and amoral children at heart.
