What are your favourite Jewish references in musicals? "A Fiddler on the Roof," "Monty Python: Spam-a-lot," "Yentl" The list goes on. Love them? Hate them? Discuss.

Oooo I had this dream where everyone in Israel didn't know what fiddler on the roof was so me and my friends had to preform it for the whole country, and liek wing it. That was a crazy dream if I may say so myself. xd

The Producers (no idea if they have one, but the crazy nazi playwright is pretty funny) My Fair Lady ("And Hebrews learn it backwards, which is absolutely frightening" from, Why can't the english learn to speak)

Guys and Dolls, song "Sue Me," lyrics: Alright, already, I'm just a no-goodnick! Alright, already, it's true. So, nu? Not a reference to Jews specifically, but a cultural reference through the use of Yiddish/Hebrew, signifying the linguistic effect of so many Jewish New Yorker City residents on the rest of the city's speech patterns.

xp Don't worry about it at all; even if you posted something wrong (which this is not, by the way), but you wouldn't get in trouble for not knowing. 3nodding
Heh; I loved Spam-a-lot; the whole Jewish part was enormously random but amusing.

I know. When I first heard the song, I had to show it to my father so that we could dance around and talk about how awesome we were because we were Jewish xd Randomness is fairly joyous at times.

I totally was gonna put The Producers... and I love My Fair Lady ^_^ Mine= Every single Mel Brooks movie. EVERY SINGLE ONE that I have seen has at least one Jewish joke in it. I swear, check!!! smile But, of course, he IS Jewish so he makes a point of it. XD Yeah, about Spamalot-- I love the song "You Won't Succeed on Broadway (if You Don't Have Any Jews)". That song is HILAROUS!!! And soooo many hidden references in there.... mrgreen

I think they are perfectly fine, fiddler on the roof was sentimental and part of my family is Russian jews so its sentimental and has a better value than most musicals at least for me. As for Spam-A-Lot the references are the best XD Yent is worse than the nanny in allot of ways, though very odd.

I get a kick out of them, Fiddler on the Roof is a beautiful story... I love anything from Mel Brooks in general...I dunno why, maybe because I like to laugh at myself.. My favorite one of all is the producers.. xd

It was amazing. x3333 one of the nurses walks by with a cart of straw, and everybody points at it and says "hey!" XD That made me laugh the most because I knew the song but totally didn't expect that...

One of my not too distant relatives (My fathers, mothers something? uncle...? cousin?) was Marc Blitzstein. He wrote Cradle Will Rock in the 30s. heart
