What does it mean when a number in a chord or a single note is in parentheses(sp)?

Most of the time I see a number in parentheses it means a harmonic, but some people may do it differently.

From the sounds of it, that's the finger you use in the chord! 1 is index finger, 2 is middle, 3 is ring, and 4 is pinky! If you could show me, that would help. sweatdrop

I see it as the bass guitar transtaled for guitar. But tabbers use there own symbols to represent something so idk.

heres an example it is chords but one string has a parentheses thats what i wanna know sometimes it is like that with single notes too

I see now! that note was played earlier. you hold the note in the parenthesis and you play the ones that are not. all three should ring out though if you do it correctly!

so you hold one note in parentheseese and dont play it all? while playing the regular notes?

Correct! It is called a ghost note. thanks MAKQ, couldn't remember what it was called.
