Recap So Far
Two similarly colored wolves danced through the trees at a leisurely pace, tongues hanging out. Both were obviously adolescents, neither big enough to be fully grown. The girl was mostly black, with silver on her chest, the tip of her tail and her feet. Crimson markings encircled her ankles. The male was black, with similar markings in silver around his front ankles, neck and tail. Both had the same yellow eyes, reinforcing the notion that they might be related. Which, in fact, they were. Firstborn son and middle daughter. He was obviously going to be big when fully grown, running with powerful strides; while his sister was more graceful, dancing through the underbrush.

"How far d' you think we are, Toby?" she called, slowing a little. He slowed, stopped and shrugged.

"Prob'ly on th' outs, Lin," he replied, looking back as she caught up.

Xieros had no idea where she was. The little pup was disorientated, exhausted, famished and looked like a train wreck. Her fur was matted with mud, and the little one looked half-starved. How long had it been since she'd had a good bit to eat. . .?

Who knew.

But Xieros couldn't stop. No no. The seers and shamens were out there, searching for her, lurking behind every shadow and whispering her name. Her brother had given her the choice of her future, and she'd chosen it. Run. If she stopped and she was too close to the lands, he had told her they'd kill her. . . .

And like hell if she was going to let that happen!

As kind as death had been to some of her family, Xieros knew deep in her heart that it wasn't time to die yet. Not now, not when she was so young. Her litter-mates had been young enough when the plague had hit, and her mother and father too.

The small handful that managed to survive, the shifting of rank, the scattering and slaughtering of the unwanted. . . .
Xieros shuddered at the memories that licked at the fringes of her memories. She couldn't stay there. . .

Not with him in charge.

One paw in front of the other. Running (though she was far from fast) the black and white stained pup didn't dare look behind her. What if they were there? Snarling and growling, waiting for her to show some sign of weakness. She would be strong. . . Xieros had no choice.

Oblivious to her surroundings, hobbling through the underbrush of the woods, she pushed herself between two trees and underneath the roots of some bushes. Lost within her own thoughts and fears, Xieros noticed too late two large wolves stopped before her.

Eyes going wide as plates, the black wolf did the only thing she could think of. . . . growl. Ears pasted to her skull, tail curling underneath her, she froze in place but kept the weak thrum in the back of her throat.

Maybe they were Adenru's cohorts. . .? What if they were special wolves. . .? Eaters of the dead, of the dying, the killers that waited to do her in. They had to be - HAD to be.

Adenru had told her they'd get her one day.
And today, it appeared, would be it.

Hearing a soft growl, Toby instinctively placed himself between the source and his sister. It was his duty to protect his sister and he would do so to the last of his ability. He swelled up as much as he could, baring his teeth and answering the growl in return. His was a little more imposing, and when he realized it, the wheels began turning...

Lindir beat him to it. She came around his flank, crouched low, studying the small form crouched into the ground. " 'Ello, lil' one," she said softly. She nudged her brother with her nose sharply and he stopped growling all of a sudden, perking his ears down at the black and white pup. "Don' worry, we're not gonna hurt you." She smiled a little. "Toby might look a lil' scary, but he's not at all."

"Thanks, Lin," he muttered, sitting back on his haunches. She looked back at him momentarily, then back at the pup.

"Where're you from, lass?"

Oh snap. Her heart fluttered in her chest (and not in a good way) when her growl was returned. How weak and pathetic she must have sounded, her little fangs bared at these ruthless killers. One swipe of his paw would send her rolling. One snap of his jaws and her head would soon be detached from her body.

But . . . no matter how terrified she was of the wolf, Xieros was stubborn. Though she lowered herself even further to the ground, instinctively groveling before the pair, she could only wait for them to eat her.

That's what Shamens did, she heard. Devour their prey after making their wounds burn and fester.

Adenru had been quite creative with his horror stories, and very, very descriptive. No wonder Xieros was terrified.

Still, something saved her - something called 'kindness', an emotion Xieros had yet to discover. The growling stopped, though the soft hum in her throat lingered a few more cautious moments. One eye looked up, studying this great female that investigated her curiously.

It took a moment for Lin's words to make sense within her mind. Not hurt her. . . .? How could she believe that? Two seconds ago they were ready to eat her and now they were telling her they were fine? Ears still folded back, and tail tucked, Xieros was caught between a rock and a hard place.

. . . . . who did she trust?

Surely not them!

They were just softening her up, stringing her along. . .right? Maybe. Body tense, the female took a long moment, looking from one to the other and back again.

"I'm from . . . ." Did she answer truthfully? Where they waiting to see if she responded properly? Was this a trick? Did she lie so they wouldn't laugh and eat her, or did she tell the truth and get devoured just because she was still much too close to Adenru's lands. . .?

He had said his territory was as big as the eye could see. And Xieros had yet to go blind. "I'm . . .from not here." She responded lamely, glancing around and honestly not having a clue. There were no familiar scents, no familiar features and everything looked . . .different.

Hanging her head, the little white faced wolf heaved an exhausted sigh. Now that she'd been stopped, she really didn't want to get up and run again. But . . if they were going to mutiltate her. . . well. . . . No. Looking up, a new flash of defiance in her eyes, the little black one took a few cautious steps in retreat. Hackles still raised, she gave a little snort. ". . . I won't go down without a fight. . . ."

Who was she trying to prove this to? Herself? Mostly. Xieros' confidence was lacking. . . . But just in case Lin and Toby were mean. Well. . . just let them try to eat her. She'd bite their tongues she would . . . . or at least she'd try.

Lindir laughed musically, then stopped abruptly. Her smile remained, however. She lowered herself to the ground, hoping it would help her level with this girl-pup. "I'm sorry," she said. "I didn't mean to laugh at you. It was rude o' me. Whate'er makes you think there's going to be a fight? I tol' you, dear one, we're not going to hurt you." She looked back at Toby. "Are we, brother?"

"Nae, lass," Toby agreed, looking at the pup as gently as he could manage. She looked well haggard, like she'd been drug through knotholes and left to wring out. And she hadn't fed well in some time. Poor thing.

What would his father do?

Take the pup in, if she would let him.

"I'm sorry I growled at you," he finally said, trying to temper gruffness. He wouldn't have bothered, but he knew if he didn't try, Lindir would have his hide. She didn't take to anyone treating another badly, for whatever reason, and especially not her own brother treating a pup with fuss on his mind. But it was hard -- he had never come in contact with an outsider before, on his own, no less. "You caught me off-guard, lass. Didn' know where you were. Or who. If you'd kept runnin', you'd be well into the territory by sundown."

"I'm Lindir, lass, and he's Toby," his sister interrupted, stopping his rambling. "Are you all right?" The concern was clear in her voice.

. . what was going on here. . .? Who were they? This couldn't be right, not at all. . . could it . . . ? Everything she'd been told about the outside had been less than pleasing. Shadows and monsters and wolves a billion times larger than she with massive claws and fangs - wolves who could read minds and turn phobias in to realities. Shamens who could cause disease and plague and hurt.

All Xieros wanted was . . . .

. . .well . . . to run away.

That had been her chosen path. She knew she had a better chance of surviving against the unknown than she did wth Adenru. After her parents and litter mates passed with the dawning of the plague . . . life had quickly lost any sense of sympathy and kindness for Xieros. Adenru had been less than kind (as well as less-than-sane) but she and a small handful of bedraggeled survivors had been forced under new rule and new law.

With the former alphas and beta's gone, with Adenru fighting his way to take charge. . . everything had seemingly gone completely downhill.

Adenru wanted power and weakness was unacceptable.

Therefor, if she were to ever prove to the world that she was strong, she couldn't be weak. If she were to be strong, she couldn't be overly emotional, and therefor . . . therefor Lindir was weak?

No no . . .that wasn't right. Was it?

So young she was (hardly more than a few months old!) the small thing didn't know how to respond. The few memories she had of her mother, her father, her littermates she thought she recalled such pleasantries.

But those hadn't lasted long at all. . . .

Confused (to say the very least) Xieros continued to stay close to the ground, trying so very hard to keep the fear out of her voice, and yet throwing every visible sign to the siblings that she was terrified.

Maybe they weren't going to hurt her. . . .Did she trust them? Or just run away?

The female kept telling her she wasn't to be harmed, she wasn't going to be eaten. Maybe she could trust them all right . . . but what was with the way they spoke? Why didn't they talk right? And why did they keep calling her Lass? She wasn't Lass - who was Lass!?!

Two bright eyes looked from one to the other - Lindir and Toby ... "I'm not Lass, you know," she finally exclaimed, lowering her head as she scowled. "I'm Xieros." There - now they wouldn't confuse her with this Lass wolf anymore. Lass. . . what a stupid name anyway.

Not entirely sure what to do with herself, Xieros continued to stare at Lindir's paws. She sure was a caring wolf, or something. Why was she so concerned about Xieros. . .? No one else ever was, including herself! How could they be so friendly with a stranger. . . . ? Weren't strangers supposed to be eaten by others?

That's what Adenru had told her before she left. But more and more, Xieros was starting to believe that maybe (just maybe) Adenru didn't know what he was talking about.

"I'm just fine," Xieros finally retorted, flipping back her head and shaking out her fur. Bad idea. A bit dizzy thanks to hunger and exhaustion, her head spun for a moment and she all but fell over. Catching herself (but barely) she wound up plopping down on her rump to keep from looking like a fool.

"You don't have to worry about me. I've been taking care of myself," she added, puffing out her chest with pride. See? She was just fine. "I'm not weak you know, I'm strong." Oh how she wanted to believe it! Maybe if she said it enough, Lindir and Toby would believe it too?

"Xieros... Xieros," Lindir said, trying out the name. The first time she didn't get it quite right, but the second round came out fine. "I can see how strong you are." Lindir nodded to accentuate her agreement. "Do you have a pack, Xieros?"

Toby could see where his sister was going with this. Bring the pup into the pack, another new member. Maybe her parents, if they're around somewhere... But he knew, somewhere in his heart, that Xieros' parents aren't nearby. He knew because if they were, they would've been there by now and Xieros wouldn't have been running so hard.

Distantly, he heard Lindir continue. "We have other strong wolves in our pack. Maybe you could join us."

The black and white pup was still torn. Whatever did she do? Her faith and trust in any wolf had been destroyed at a very tender age. It wasn't entirely Adenru's fault, but his lies and stories and threats hadn't helped the young ones judgement. Her poor mind may be broken, but it wasn't completely shattered.

Her future was not yet decided upon her past, but would be molded as she went along.

There was hope for the black and white pup yet. . . . but it wasn't necessarily going to be easy to find.

Running in to Lindir, though, and her brother was a step in the proper direction. To save Xieros from her nightmares would help balance her out in the future. To be some place safe, to learn that her misgivings weren't entirely based on fact. . .

Good could be done, if the fates (and Xieros' fear and stubborness) didn't get in the way.

Certain that Lindir would cut her down, the dark eyed pup almost gaped when she heard Lindir's reaction. She agreed with her strength? Truly? Realizing that her surprise was most obvious, the little pup puffed out her chest and gave a broad, toothy smile. It was supposed to look intimidating, and help show her strength. "I'm so strong I . . . . " She hesitated, casting an uncertain glance from Toby to Lindir.

If she was strong was that why she was alone? Was she honest and did she tell them of Adenru and her life besides plague? Did she speak of her parents, the loving gammas they were, or lie? How truthful could she be with these strangers. . . .?

"I . . . " A new pack with strong wolves?

Uhoh.

If there were strong wolves. . . Adenru had been strong - very strong. If she joined a new pack, wouldn't they eat her alive? Would they treat her as Adenru had his wolves. . . ? Would life be as traumatizing for an outsider as she had been told?

They had said that if she left, she'd be nothing. If the shamens and seers didn't torment her with their magics, than no pack would ever take her in. Not without false promises, not without ripping her body to rags.

". . . I don't know. . . . ." She didn't want to show either wolf that she was afraid of what waited further in pack territory. She didn't want to show that she was honestly scared out of her wits end, exhausted, and frightened about everything. The shadows around her scared her, no matter how tough she talked.

"I think I could take care of myself all right." Lies - lies and deception. But Lindir and Toby (or so Xieros believed) would never be able to tell. She was too good a lier to let them witness the truth.

If these two wolves thought she was going to fall for their trap . . . oh no - Xieros was not going to be an outcast and a scapegoat all her life. No. Way.

Lindir glanced back at her brother with a gentle smile as Xieros swelled with self-pride. She was of the opinion that the little pup was indeed strong, but powerfully frightened of something. She saw no reason that the pack could not or would not help the young female -- if she would let them, that is.

Toby carefully lowered himself to the forest floor, tail thumping the ground twice. "Y' know," he said all of a sudden, "your coloring's very much like our family's. All black and white and red." He cocked his head to the side, studying her, his tone sounding of reminiscence.

Lindir laughed again, that musical sound, before zeroing back in on Xieros gently. "I've got no doubt that you're strong enough t' strike out on your own," she said in her classic lilt. "But we'd be more than happy to help you out, for a little while at least. That is, if you'd let us, Xieros."

"The pack would be happy to have another good, strong wolf," Toby added gently.

The black and white pup was still torn. In her naivetee, she was caught between a rock and a hard place. If she stayed on her own, deep down, the little one new she wouldn't last long. As much as she hated to admit she needed help or assistance, the stubborn puppy was close to collapsing. She was far too young to be able to hunt effectively, and after failed attempt after failed attempt, the little thing had all but given up.

She'd eat later . . . . but if she didn't find sustinance soon enough, her little puppy life would be cut drastically short.

On the other hand, the nightmares weaved and told her after the plague still haunted her. She understood how things worked within a pack. . . . sort of. Her memories of 'the good ol' days' with her parents and littermates was hazy. She had been only a few weeks old when the sickness arrived, on top of alread famished times, so when Adenru took over the pack and wove tails of unimaginable horrors to Xieros and her remaining sibling, she had started out on her journey with caution and mistrust.

The entire world was out to eat her, she was sure of it. Kind words could be easil laced with lies and deception, and nothing good ever seemed to last.

Now, face to face with the black and white wolves named Toby and Lindir, Xieros didn't know which path to choose. Neither ending looked good.

But. . . her black ears twitched and she eyed Lindir with a small touch of interest. Had she said 'for a little while'. . .? As in the situation wasn't forever? As in she wouldn't be the scapegoat in the pack until her dying day?

. . .of course. How could she have been so silly? If the abuse got bad enough, she'd just run away again or at the very least die trying. Nothing said she had to stay with these new ones, but perhaps she could use this to her advantage? If they killed her when she arrived - fine. What did it matter? She'd be dead soon enough and returned with her beloved family before her. But if they didn't eat her completely, why couldn't she stay?

Only for a day or two, just enough to get a meal and then she could disappear again.

Yes. . .

Desperation and instinct demanded companionship, as well as a need for food.

No matter what happened, no matter which path she traveled, the ending was completely unknown. Lindir and Toby said kind things now, but once back upon their lands who was to say they'd stay just as sweet?

Well, Xieros didn't have to trust them in the least. She knew that they'd change - oh yes. She knew. But that didn't mean she wouldn't go along with their bittersweet deception.

Looking over at Toby, the little pup gave a little wag of her striped tassle, slowly untucking it rom her rump. Well, if they were black and white too. . . . that's what her family had been. . . before Adenru.

"Well. . ." she started softly, hesitantly, ears still glued to her head and body lowered to the ground.

There was always a way to run away, she reminded herself. This wasn't her being weak, this was her taking advantage of the situaiton. That's right! She wasn't weak. . .she'd be strong. She never had to trust any of these new wolves, but just maybe she could amuse them. . .

Just for a little while, Lindir had said.

"Well I'll. . . I'll . . . I don't need help," she carefully clarified, not wanting to admit to being completely helpless, "but I . . ." Her pride had to come down. Unable to think of anything to say, the small black and white pup lowered her head so her nose touched the ground. Heaving a wounded sigh, the little one gave the gentlest of whimpers. "I am a little hungry. . . ."

That was that.

So much for ever being strong. Now they probably wouldn't want to help her, or keep her. Weak wolves were nothing but trouble, and outcasts, and unwanted (or so she'd heard). Now that she was weak and dependent and needy. . . .

Oh well.

Whatever did it matter? Being hungry was by far better than being dead.

[[ I think I got all the posts in order. Hopefully. X3 In any case, I'll likely be throwing Thayne and maybe get Tony in on this... or maybe alphas. Mostly just big beta Da, though. ]]

Lindir's smile widened upon hearing that the pup would stay. She hadn't really expected Xieros to say she would stay, but was nonetheless elated when she was pleasantly surprised by the little female's acceptance of their aid. Momma and Da would be happy! And Lindir herself was pleased as punch to have helped this little underfed, frightened girl. She stood gracefully, her tail wagging with happiness. Toby stood with her, tail wagging like his sister's -- it was odd, how they sometimes moved like one -- and grinned at Xieros.

"C'mon, Xieros," he said. "We'll catch some rabbits o' summat. Might even have some deer left over. Plenty of good cold water next t' our den; you could even wash, if you want."

Lindir rolled her eyes at his last comment as she trotted over to Xieros. "Stars, Toby, have a lil' sense for th' lass," she said, directing it over the pup's back. "Sayin' things so brutally." She nudged the pup with her nose gently, her eyes sparkling with how pleased she was. "Ignore him, Xieros. He's a brute. But at least he can lead the way back to the den." She winked at the pup and leaned down to whisper conspiratorially. "Just t' make him feel better."

((*giggles* Looks good to me! ))
O'summat? T'our? The little wolf still didn't know why the talked funny. Maybe that's how all wolves outside of her home territories spoke? Maybe that's how outsiders were different, and maybe that's why Adenru didn't approve of weak-blood? Would they expect her talk like that too? Oh dear . . . . She didn't even know how to talk funny like that!

Now that she'd agreed, though, there was no turning back now. Well, maybe there was but she doubted it would please the two black and white wolves and Xieros was so sick of running. Her paws hurt, he tummy hurt, even her tail hurt. . .

At the very least, this would be a respite. If she went with them and traveled their lands, that would mean Adenru and the nightmares that followed her couldn't get to her. The first rule of a wolf was that territories and packlands were sacred - outsiders and loners couldn't just meander on to land that wasn't there.

More and more, logic started to tell Xieros that she made the right decision. Even if she were treated as a scapegoat, even if she was beat upon nightly . . . well . . . that fate was better than being ripped to shreds thanks to Adenru and his small pack. And maybe - just maybe - these two really meant what they said. . if their words were true, wouldn't that mean that her nightmares could be left at the edge of the territory.

A light of hope - very small but very bright - began to flicker within the pups heart. A sense of relief, of gratification began to burn. And yet, as quick as the light arrived, it was quickly snuffed as Lindir trotted over to Xieros.

Instinct caused the cowering pup to roll to her side, exposing her belly and neck. That's what one did when a large one approached - and Lindir (to Xieros' experience) was huge. Her tail tucked agianst her belly, and she almost cringed, awaiting a snarl or growl to appear from the females lips.

Surprisingly, when Lindir leaned closer, she held no hostility or harm in her voice. "A - a brute?" What on earth was that!? Whatever it was, apparantly Toby was it! Casting a slightly fearful glance at the male, Xieros decided that maybe she better not mess with the larger male. He had been the more aggressive of the two.

Glancing desperately up at Lindir, Xieros rolled on to her belly and squirmed closer to the white masked wolfess. She was so very nice. . . . Oh, how Xieros didn't want it all to be a facade! She'd stay leary of Toby, the brute, but Lindir was her new savior.

Looking up, nose to nose with Lindir, the black and white striped wolf gave a small wag of her (once again) tucked tail. "Ok," she whispered softly, casting an uneasy glance at Toby. "Just t'. . .just t'make him feel better. I don't mind if he leads," she added as a small after thought. Eyes turned back up to Lindirs own, ". . . . just so long as he doesn't eat me."

((Just as a note, you can feel free to assume Xieros follows them (very close to Lindir might I add) if you need them to move/meander further inland. *grins* I don't mind any posing or whatnot.))

Lindir giggled at Xieros. "He isn't gonna eat you, silly girl," she replied affectionately as they trotted through the packlands in the direction of their home den. Her mind was running through various things: who was home, what was there to eat, where her siblings were, if they should go to Uncle Hige's first since it was closer... But she decided home was the best place to be, even if it was a little farther away. She figured Toby would know that and head home. "He's only int'rested in prey. We don' eat wolf in these lands."

Toby, running point, was wondering things himself, but less along the lines of hospitality for the pup -- he knew Lindir would be taking care of that, and Momma would do what Lindir forgot about -- and more along the lines of possible dangers. What had that pup been running from? Maybe it was what happened to her parents that chased her down. Surely, it had to have something to do with that. A pup didn't just leave the pack unless something serious had happened, and Toby seriously doubted just a deadly sickness was the reason. His father had told him things about other packs; after all, Thayne had been a part of two before he had settled here, following Uncle Hige's lead so long before Toby's entrance into the world. Da had told him about diseases that killed whole packs, and vicious wolves who would kill for sport as much as for vengeance. Toby had never come upon these things in his own life, but he was preparing -- Da had told him to be ready if one of those wolves ever came for his mother. She had been part of one of those packs and escaped, but had never said a thing to him about it.

He looked around and saw they'd come farther than he'd expected. He glanced back at the pair of females, chatting quietly with each other, and stopped to turn a bit and cross the path. Lindir trotted up fairly close to him, out in front, and lifted her nose to smell ahead of them. "The den's just over th' rise," he said, ignoring Lindir's "I know that" look. "I'm gonna go find summat for th' Xieros. Should be a coupla rabbits off yonder way. Be back in a jiff." Lindir licked his cheek before he grinned down at Xieros and wheeled to lope off to the west through the trees. Lindir looked back at Xieros, her head cocked to the side. "C'mon then, dear. Smells like da's home." Her grin broadened. "You'll like him."

Xieros kept close to Lindir's heals. She walked in a very submissive manner, not quite relaxed or trusting enough to completely let her guard down. Instinct told her that larger wolves were to be submitted to, and therefor, her tail stayed low and her ears had yet to be removed from her downy head. She kept her body as low as she could, even if it did make walking a bit awkward. Her body language screamed fear, uncertainty, and a whole lot of shyness.

She still didn't know what would become of her. Sure, Xieros had a few ideas (none of which ended well) but if this was to be her lot in life . . . so be it. As they continued to track deeper within the heart of the packlands, the black and white pups stomach twisted in to more and more knots. The driving hunger she'd felt earlier was slowly transformed in to nausea - pain. That was what was going to happen to her, wasn't it?

If she wasn't eaten by the evil shamens and seers that hunted in the night, she'd now be shown through force her place in this pack.

Teeth hurt. Wounds hurt. Bites hurt. Xieros did not like to be hurt.

Still, between the two of them, the little black and white didn't dare stray far from Lindir. She couldn't understand what made Toby a brute, or even what a brute was, but the petite femme wanted to know. Maybe she'd ask Lindir later, or Toby - no no . . not Toby. He'd probably chew her face off if she did. Maybe that's what brutes did?

No matter how many assurances Lindir promised Xieros, the black and white one had trouble trusting those words. Promises were easily broken, and Adenru's words had impressioned themselves deeply upon the puppy. Add a naturally shy and mistrusting nature on top of such an innocent and fragile mind, and one knew that it would take persistance and patience to earn this baby's trust.

The sights and smells of the territory had changed. There was an unusual fragrance upon the wind, a smell she'd never discvered before. Sure, there were a million foreign scents of other wolves and things, but this one foreign smell had Xieros completely confused.

It smelled of water . . . but not.

Xieros had never seen an ocean or beach.*

How far they walked, Xieros didn't know. But with every step, the little one wanted nothing more than to lay down and rest. Her paws hur, her muscles ached, and she was quickly running low on energy. But where health failed, stubborness prevailed. Whenever she began to slow, she stiffened her resolve and trotted quicker to catch up to Lindir's shoulder. Wherever they were taking her, Xieros couldn't help but be impressed - the size of this territory seemed huge. . . much larger than her homelands.

Lost in thought, the little one slammed on the breaks as soon as Toby turned to face them. Oh no - had she done something wrong? As Lindir continued onward to join, Xieros gulped dryly. Well . . . they were obviously somewhere! Scents were thick and hard to untangle . . . by this point, Xieros knew every wolf that wandered the packlands recently, even without ever meeting.

Staring up at Toby, half in terror, half in awe, Xieros was thoroughly surprised when he made some offhand comment about rabbits. She didn't know what summat was, but rabbits . . . was he really doing to bring her something to eat?

No. Couldn't be. No one gave up food that easily. As Toby passed, she all but groveled at his feet, staring down at her paws and inwardly flinching as he passed. Was he secretly upset for having to go feed her. . . ?

Oh dear.

All her fears of Toby, though, were amplified as soon as Lindir invited her closer. Da. . .? What wa Da? Who was Da? Images of Adenru-esque wolves ran through her imagination at full speed - the soft spoken demeanor which seemed only to follow with snarling growls, bristling fur, pain and blood shed.

He had a might temper, Adenru did. Was this Da wolf similar?

On the other hand, Lindir had said she'd like him - but how would she know who Xieros liked and didn't like? They had only just met! Oh well. . . . whatever happened, Xieros would be brave.

She wasn't a coward, not at all.

Slunk low to the ground, the black and white girl quickly ran beside Lindir and looked helplessly up at her. ". . . .if you say so," she whispered.

((*As a note - this land is sort of partially in the woods, partially near the ocean/sea, correct? *grins and has to double check the packlands information again*))

((Sorry she doesn't say a whole lot in this post. x3 She's just terrified at what (she imagines) is going to come. I promise she's not this bad once she trusts and opens up to wolves. *grins* Thanks for being patient with her. ))

[[ I think she's adorable! Just precious. Poor thing all scared and overimaginative. Lindir's gonna spoil her rotten. Toby's probably not gonna be much better -- even if Xieros is deathly afraid of him. whee ]]

"I promise you'll like him, Xieros. He's a very good wolf, th' beta o' our pack." The last was said with just a little pride. "He's very loving an' sweet as can be, an' he'll protect you like th' rest of us." Lindir stopped babbling and noticed how Xieros moved -- slowly and stiffly, like she was weakening. The older female felt as if she should carry the pup, but something in her said it might frighten Xieros a little much. Lindir's mind came up short at that, after a few seconds of thinking. What pup wasn't carried by their parents here and there when they were young? Oh, the things the poor girl must have been through!

They headed slowly down the incline toward the den, on the dry side. "Toby'll be back soon with some fresh rabbit for you, Xieros," she commented gently with a smile. "They've been fat so far this year." She looked back as she stepped to the plateau in front of the den and waited for the pup so she could nudge her toward the small stream on the opposite side. "Go over an' get yourself some water. I'll be right here," she said with a smile and sat herself on the stream-side of the den opening. She waited for Xieros to go to the stream before lifting her nose and howling delicately for her father. It wasn't long before Thayne came into view, having not been far south from the den to begin with.

If Xieros thought Lin and Toby were large, Thayne would be a monster. The Seaside beta had always been large, due to his mountain heritage, but he'd gotten larger with maturity thanks to a broad back, a deep chest, heavy paws and a refined but large head and neck. His tribal swirl markings and the lighter gray of the wide scar on his shoulder from an old fight might have made him look gruff and angry, but the kindness in his yellow eyes offset any of that. Those eyes lit up happily at the sight of his daughter and he woofed at her in greeting, tail wagging briskly. "Ho, lass." Lindir trotted over and licked his chin and cheek lovingly, rubbing her head against his ruff.

"Da," she said breathlessly, "Toby and I were running close by th' borders an' we foun' a pup. Her name's Xieros an' she's been runnin' from summat. Da, she needs a place an' a family." She began to whisper. "She's afraid, Da."

Thayne nodded after a moment and lowered himself to the ground, hoping to look less imposing to a small pup on her level. "If she needs a home, she's welcome 'ere. I'm not 'bout t' turn 'way a pup."

Lindir's tail went wild and she nuzzled her father happily. "Oh, Da, thank you!"

Thayne pushed at her playfully. "What, y' daft, Lin? Y' think I'd turn out a pup fer not'in'?"

((Aww - well I'm glad you find her adorable. :3 If she is indeed 'accepted' in, well, I think this small family in Seadside is going to do her heart some good. n.n ))

Xieros tried to calm her fear and terror. As they approached the den, she caught the strong scents of others, and one wolf in particular. Was that this might beta of the pack. . .? The black and white one knew that if she didn't impress the beta, she'd be turned away without a second thought. . . or killed.

Quiet -not unusual for the little one- she did as she was told without a second thought. The scent of fresh, clean water caught the black females attention, and it didn't take her long to realize just how thirsty she was. Hunger was one danger, but dehydration was another! Her paws quickly brought her to the small trickling stream, and Xieros wiggled her butt, and pounced. Muddy paws hit the water, and the little one all but rolled around in the refreshing stream. She wanted to be clean - the mud and dried blood itched terribly so and pulled at her fur - and puppy instinct was desperate for some sort of fun.

For a simple moment, she allowed herself to act as she should - rolling in the water, and pawing at an invisible playmate. Innocence shone through for a small moment - until she remembered her manners.

Casting a fearful look behind her, Xieros quickly flipped back to her stomach, crouched in the water, and dipped her muzzle in. The water felt nice against her dry tongue and throat, and it did help take the bite off her hunger. Her drink turned in to practical inhilation as she gulped down mouthful after mouthful. Closing her eyes, the puppy did nothing but drink.

One minute, then two, and finally Xieros couldn't drink anymore. Raising her head, licking her nose, she had almost forgotten about this new Beta waiting to interrogate and terrorize her. Maybe she shouldn't of drank so much so quickly, because the puppy felt ill.

Slowly, looking now like a water-logged bedraggeled mess, pale eyes turned to face this newcome . . .

And she couldn't help but whine in a bit of fear.

He was huge~!! Even lying down, the black furred male was gargantuan! Much larger than Toby and Lindir. . . She was going to get eaten by him for sure. Wolves of that size ate puppies, or so she'd been told. One gulp and there went her head, another her legs, and a final third the rest of her. . . anything remaining would be treats for the birds.

. . . now what?

Did she approach? Did she retreat? Did she look at him? Did she turn away? Confused and unsure of what to do, she remembered the greetings she gave her parents and even Adenru and the others . . . .

Without knowing why, the little one took a few shaky steps closer to Thayne, before rolling on her side and reaching a paw out towards him. Her tail curled up tight against her belly, ears back (as always), and she gave a small, half-way panicked whimper.

A miserable, half-starved wreck she was . . . . but it didn't matter.

Closing her eyes, suddenly feeling absolutely miserable with anxiety, Xieros didn't dare get any closer in case her approach was unwelcomed. With her belly exposed, he could snap her in two with one quick bite. A quick thrust of his paw and her bones would shatter in two.

What would happen next? It was truly up to the big black one - had she submitted properly? Fear quickly stabbed away pride - she'd beg him not to hurt her if she had to. . . all she wanted right now was food - FOOD! Oh, why hadn't Toby come back sooner?

. . . .maybe he was a brute and had never planned to come back and feed her anyway. Maybe him running away had been a ploy, a distraction to get her to trust them, only so Thayne could devour her for lunch himself.

Imagination suddenly running wild, a pale eye landed at Thayne's feet (heaven forbid she be so bold to look him in the eye) and she whined a desperate plea, " . . . . i'm r-r-really not that tasty. . . . you can - can have the rabbit instead."

Yes - she was about the size of a rabbit, and the rabbits were allegedly fatter up here. It would do Thayne more good to eat a rabbit instead of ripping her apart. She didn't have much meat on her bones at all.

Seeing the little one prostrate herself before him, Thayne was reminded of himself. His memories switched him back to the days of his own lonely pup existence, groveling before Devvyl in hopes of a place in the large male's pack... Even now, Thayne remembered the red and black male as a gargantuan wolf, towering over him and looking down with kindness. He shook himself of his memories, he looked back at Xieros and took in her skinny frame, now accentuated by stream-soaked fur that clung to her body.

It was the comment about him eating her instead of the rabbit that set him off.

He knew about carnivore wolves. He'd heard about them his temporary time in his birthpack and in Devvyl's, but never encountered any. But he was sure as anything that this pup had been closer to them than he had ever wanted to be. He pushed himself to his feet and padded slowly over to the tiny female. He looked down on her, studying her tiny frame. He could swear he could hear her heart thumping wildly, feel it under the pads of his paws through the packed ground in front of his den.

Thayne's heart swelled for this bedraggled little one.

He lay down behind her and reached out a paw to drag her to him, the movement gentle and loving as he had ever been with any of his own blood children. He tucked her between his forepaws and began to clean her carefully, speaking between licks. His voice was deep, slow and soothing, or at the very least, intended to be. He wanted to make sure she understood, and he knew that outsiders couldn't always understand him. Stars, sometimes he wasn't sure all his pack could understand him. "I'm not gonna eat y', child. This iddn a wolf-eater's place; we kill such abominations who'd come on our lands." He smiled into her wide, pale eyes. "Y' can stay long as y' need... o' long as y' wan', if th' two are diff'rent. Nae a soul's gonna 'arm y' long as ye're in these lands, darlin' lass."

Lindir sat where she had met her father, unwilling to interrupt the moment between the pup and her da. She understood how important it was for Xieros to trust his truth, and she didn't want to jeopardize Xieros getting the full extent of his words. The smell of blood and her brother behind her let her know that Toby was back, and she was pleasantly to surprised to see him carrying two nice, fat hares in his jaws. "Shhh," she urged him and he sat next to her compliantly and set down the rabbits. Both of them smiled at the scene before them and Lindir leaned against her brother lovingly. "Iddn it sweet?" she whispered. "Think she'll stay with us?"

Toby shrugged. "Dunno yet, Lin."

Oh no . . . oh no here it was. The end of the ends. As her eyes stared up at the black adult, she quickly closed them as soon as he moved around her. She felt him settle, and her water-logged fur stood on end as she felt his paw on her.

For a long moment, her entire body hardened in to stress and anxiety - she quivered and shook from terror of his touch. And as she was dragged closer, ever so closer, the terrofied puppy knew that she had met the end. In one second, her head would be detached from her shoulders and that . . . . would be the end of it. Death would finally snatch the last of her parents blood line, and it wouldn't be from plague, or infection, or a hunters trap.

Oh no, her demise would be the demise of certain wolves before her . . .

She would soon become a snack. In a quick moment, her wild imagination questioned the reality. In that half a moment that it took Thayne's tongue to touch her fur, Xieros understood fully that this was her life, and this was its final chapter. If words could sum up her life, this would be it:

There once was a puppy. She ran away and was eaten. The end.

Such was her lot in life - survival of the fittest.

It wasn't as if she'd ever expected to have a long life but . . . but deep down, a part of female clung deeply to the root of survival. Deep down, she wanted nothing other than to live and . . . and grow and . . . and do whatever it was that wolves were supposed to do.

She wanted to not be afraid, she wanted to learn how to hunt, and sing in a chorus howl, and run in a thunderstorm. Her life was overwhelmed with fear, and part of Xieros was thoroughly, thoroughly disappointed.

This was her end.

At the teeth of the wolf named Thayne.

Frozen with fear, she made no fight against the wolf. Better to accept her fate than prolongue the suffering. She wasn't stupid, she knew she hadn't a chance!

One lick . . . Was he tasting her? Oh gods, why didn't he just do it already! . . . Two . . . then three. . . . Though fear struck her mind, the affection behind his grooming touched her heart. Instinct suddenly smacked the occurance that she wasn't being eaten . . . she was being cleaned! Her fur (still rather dirty despite her bath) was now being groomed. His touch was gentle, and his movements were calm and careful. There was absolutely nothing negitive about his demeanor at all. . .

A memory flickered, as if lit by a dying candle. THe memory was hazy - so very, very dim - but she remembered her parents before the plague. Her siblings. Wasn't this how she'd been doted upon, loved, even? Hadn't at one point she felt secure and safe?

As quick as the memory evolved, it faded. But the little puppy, held within Thayne's paws, began to cautiously relax.

A nervous whimper slipped from her throat, though she dared not move. And then he spoke.

She felt his chest vibrate, and his accented words suddenly touched her ears. He spoke just as funny as Lindir and the brute, Toby! Oh no . . Iddn? Nae? Arm? And lass - again with the lass! Slowly, her brain registered and pieced together his words, though she didn't dare react. She didn't want to disturb him, or cause him grief or upset him whilst he was busy cleaning her.

It might make him mad, and Thayne could easily change his mind.

But . . . .

. . . they didn't eat wolves here? She didn't have to fear becoming a chew toy. . .? No. That couldn't be right - could it? Oh . . oh dear. But Lindir had said the same thing, hadn't she, and wasn't Thayne the beta? He was a strong wolf, he didn't need to lie.

And did he say she could stay?

His words, though strange in sound, caused the little one a great deal of uncertainty. Part of the puppy, so desperate for socialization, so tired of being afraid, wanted nothing more than to eat up his words and trust him implicitely. She was young, stupid, and the scars and wounds of her past could easily be stitched with the right amount of tender loving care.

But those wounds had already scarred, and Xieros couldn't let herself believe his good news so quickly. He was still a stranger, and there was nothing to stay that he could change his mind at any given moment. She shouldn't get her hopes up. . . yet.

Slowly, carefully, cautiously she tilted her head up to stare at the wolf. She was warm, she was groomed and was being cuddled. There was no malice in his disposition, no anger or stress in his composure - he seemed just as content to speak with her as Lindir had been.

So enthralled with fear and shyness, Xieros had completely forgotten about Lindir and Toby. . . and even her own hunger. Right now, her body was relaxing muscle by muscle. The black and white pup didn't dare move out of Thayne's grasp (. . he might get mad . . .) but the longer she stayed, the more exhausted and weak her body seemed to slip.

How long had she been running. . . .?

It seemed that now, for a little while at least, Xieros could finally get some rest. "You won't . . . you won' eat me th-then?" She had to ask him directly. Yes, he had said he wouldn't harm her, and that wolf-eaters were run out of the lands but . . . but she just HAD to be sure! "Promise?"

To a puppy, a promise meant everything. Xieros didn't expect him to keep it, but . . . . maybe . . . just maybe . . . she could relax a little easier if he said he would. Ignorance was bliss, wasn't it? Maybe if he promised her, she could rest her fear to the side. That way, when he broke it, she could say she truly never knew it was coming.

. . . . "I'm not Lass, you know. . . sir," she whispered ever so meekly, "I'm Xieros."

Thayne felt her little body relax slowly under his tongue, until she was comparatively limp -- comparatively meaning as opposed to the fearful stiffness from before. He was by no means under the impression that she now trusted him any more than before, but at least she might be on the way. "Promise by m' 'eart, m'dear. Not gonna eat y'." He nuzzled her once, gently, behind an ear and licked her once or twice more. Her announcement of her name made him laugh aloud. "I know yer name's Xieros, an' I'm sorry if I cannae say it properly. 'Lass' is jus' what my birthpack called girls. 'Lad' fer boys. Y' see?"

He turned his head to see Toby sitting next to his sister and wuffed at the firstborn impatiently. "What y' sittin' on yer duff fer, lad? Th' child's starved an' y' waitin' at th' end o' th' line like a daft fawn." The verbal cuff was said with good humor to curb the bite, but the command was no less powerful. Toby ducked his head with a blush and trotted over with the two hares, set them at his father's paws and smiled at the little pup before nudging his father's ear and backing away. Thayne reached out with his near paw and pulled one of the fat hares to him, tore open the body and pushed it to her. "An' my name's Thayne, Xieros. Not 'sir'." He'd let her eat where she wanted -- stars knew she needed it. And he didn't want to make her more uncomfortable.

There it was . . . . Relief. The anxiety and stress that had twisted and churned her stomache, the phobias and terror that she'd imaginated Thayne and his pack out to be . . . disappeared.
Upon his words, he'd promised her she wouldn't be eaten and desperation, mixed with their gentle and kind patience caused the pup to beleive.
Sure, a small part of her expected him to go back on it. . . maybe she wasn't big enough to make a meal? Maybe they needed to fatten her up? Ideas still circulated about her mind, but the thoughts weren't nearly as present as before.

Let them do what they needed. . . Xieros, the puppy, was tired of running. Regardless of her fate, she would choose to stay and see what happened. It wasn't permanent, she reassured herself, she could leave anytime. . . but for now, a place to sleep, food to eat . . . what more could she ask for?

Oh, if she only understood the relief and reassurance she felt. All Xieros knew was things were different with his promise. He had seemed so honest, so truthful. . . maybe this would be for real for once.

There's was always a first time for everything.

It took Xieros abit to interpret Thayne's words - she really wanted to ask him why he talked funny, but dared not. She would be on her best behavior she would, and walk lightly around her saviors for however long she stayed.

The cogs in her mind, still trying to understand this newness, this ray of hope and light, suddenly slowed as Toby approached. Oh no . . . well. . . her eyes seemed to dance from his dark fur to the rabbit he carred. Part of her was so very glad - he'd come back with food~! He really had!

Another promise made real . . .how unexpectedly delightful! Though she leaned away from Toby, half hiding in to Thayne's thick fur, she did see him smile. . . . .

But Lindir had still said he was a brute~! What was it? Maybe she'd never know. . . .but Xieros had decided she'd be EXTRA careful around Thayne's son. If he were as much a brute as Lindir had whispered, then there was no telling what he could do.

Thankfully, her overactive imagination was quickly stilled as soon as Thayne pushed her over to the rabbit. Xieros was stunned - was it really for her? Could she really eat? Weren't there rules though - wasn't she to pick at the scraps and leftovers? An uncertain look at Thayne, and she gave a little wistful whine . . .

Oh, the food looked delicious and her mouth was watering so hard she was afraid she'd drool! But a whole rabbit. . . ? Really? Glancing from Thayne, she craned her neck over her shoulder to rest her pale eyes upon Lindir and Toby. Didn't they have to eat first?

"I kin share, you know. . . I don't. . I don't mind to wait." The rabbit, to Xieros, was huge. And with Toby snaring two of them, it was a feast they could all partake in! There was enough food on one rabbit alone to last an entire week . . .or so the little one imagined.

Licking her maw, instinct and survival faught with her. Oh, how she just wanted to gorge. . . .

Xieros' tiny whine nearly broke the hearts of all three wolves nearby. Lindir actually whined herself, a sound of sympathy for the tiny female, and lay herself flat where she had been sitting, with her ears flat against her head. Poor lil' thing! Toby leaned down and nuzzled his sister reassuringly, fully believing that his father could solve any problem.

And Thayne himself had every intention of solving the current issue.

He could see how badly the little wolf wanted to eat, but that she controlled herself powerfully. And though it hurt him to see her hold herself back, he praised her silently for such powerful control. He hoped it would serve her throughout the rest of her life, but for now, it was impeding her health. He leaned over, tore off a small section from the rabbit and placed it before her. "Eat, child," he said gently but firmly, his tone brooking no argument. "Here in this family, we eat by order o' need, not by status. An' as long as y' stay wi' us, ye're good as family." My pup as much as Lin and Toby, or Ellie or Marcus or Liam... he thought but kept to himself. Didn't want to overwhelm the girl, did he?

"Now," he continued; "y' got t' eat slow o' ye'll get sick. Cannae ha' tha', can we?" He said it with a gentle fatherly smile, the expression tempered by raising his own litter. Amazing how he'd changed so much since they'd been born, and he wouldn't have changed it for the world. "Eat tha' bit there, an' I'll gi' y' 'nother bit after."

Toby piped up from his place in the brother-sister pair. "Da, we thought o' somethin'. Can we take Xieros t' th' ocean?" His accent got more noticeable around his father's heavy brogue, apparently. "We don' think she's ever seen it..."

Thayne nodded toward his eldest with a half-smile. "T'morrow, son," he said. "Let th' lil' one rest today. T'morrow we'll see 'bout th' beach. Maybe even get th' pack t'gether fer it." He liked the idea; many of his pack members had hardly seen him, Tony or the children, being as they had such a large territory and an equally large pack! The beach would be a good outing for them all -- and then maybe Xieros could see the others, and they could see a new, hopefully permanent addition to the pack. "Maybe th' next day. We'll see how Xieros feel 'bout it -- t'morrow."

Pale eyes focused only the rabbit before her, she almost whined a second time as Thayne (apparantly) took her idea to heart. He was going to eat first - look at the way he ripped that ever-so-delicious slice off the corpse.

She dug her claws in to the ground, shifting from paw to paw in impatience and need. It was soooo hard to just sit and wait~! And if Thayne was going to eat, then that meant Toby and Lindir would too, and any others in this pack whom might be around. The thought of waiting wasn't a problem - it was the fear and realization that she probably wouldn't get much (if anything) to eat at all.

. . . but scraps were better than nothing, she remembered. At this point even the grass and dirt looked appetizing.

Any inward disappointment she felt about potentially losing a meal changed within a heartbeat. Instead of Thayne gobbling up the tender piece, he laid it out before her, and gave her permission to feed!

Was he for real? Eyes going wide, not out of fright but genuine surprise, Xieros couldn't help but gasp. The black wolf truly meant she could feed, even before himself and the others! Then and there, the little puppies guard dropped completely, and a smile of pure thankfullness crossed her features.

FOOD!

Yummy, nummy, food!

Her striped tassle of a tail wagged quickly behind her as she pounced on the little piece of meat before her. Little white teeth sunk deep in to the bloodied meat, and she tried sooo very hard to eat slowly. The first few bites were practically inhaled, before she remembered Thayne's warning.

If she got sick, she'd probably be in trouble, so she HAD to slow down. Lifting her head, muzzle covered in rabbit, she licked at the blood and glanced from Thayne to Toby and Lindir. Her tail had slowed in its wagging, but the little puppy couldn't help but be pleased.

It tasted sooooooooo good!

Oh, she'd have to thank them all for being so sweet with her. The phobia and caution she'd displayed was slowly being forgotten. She was taking her first steps toward trust, though it was still quite the long road to travel. Before she had a chance to thank them, the little pup was drawn to finishing the strip of meat set out before her.

Never had a meal tasted so delicious.

Even after slowing, Xieros managed to finish the meat fairly quickly. Ears back, she looked up at Thayne, before turning around so she faced him. Even if he didn't give her anymore (and she was still too afraid to beg or request seconds) the little bit of food was already making her feel better. The emptiness of her stomach wasn't quite so apparant. . . . but her appetite had merely been wetted!

If anything, Xieros was more ravenous than before, but the little one was NOT going to push her luck. She was genuinely thankful, and figured now was as good a time as any to express it. She didn't want them thinking she was ungrateful! Oh no.

Ears back, and tail tucked close to her belly, Xieros lept to her hind legs. Unsteady, she put her paws again Thayne's chest else she topple over, and licked underneath his chin, whining softly in submission and gratitude.

But . . . Thayne hadn't been the only one to feed her - Lindir and Toby had found her too, hadn't they? Quickly dropping from Thayne's side, body still cowering, she pulled herself away from the dead rabbit. Perhaps it was best to leave the carcass, just so she wasn't tempted to tear in to it without permission. If she didn't have food to drool over, maybe the rest of her unsatiated hunger would dissappear.

Padding over to where sister and brother sat, Xieros approached Lindir first, tail and body still submissive as ever. Whining softly in her throat, she prepared herself for an attack or repremand as she softly nuzzled the females face and cheek, ever thankful for her kind thought and hospitality.

Sure that Lindir knew of her gratitude, Toby was next. There was a moments hesitation, before she crawled closer to the adolescent. Though he wasn't nearly as large as Thayne, Xieros didn't understand what secrest he may be hiding. . .

And yet . . .

He had hunted rabbits for her, and let her share in the feast. Her whine turned in to a soft whimper as she looked up at him. She couldn't reach his face, but didn't dare touch him without express permission. Instead, she rolled back on her side, reaching a paw up and out at him to show her good intentions. "Th-thank you for the food," she whispered.

And then, as quickly as she approached, the little one rememebered that mabe none of them had wanted to be touched. Xieros wasn't exactly the most snuggly of puppies with strangers, and to the entire family, wans't that what she was? A stranger?

Body practically dragging along the floor, the skittish female booked it back to Thaynes side. Skittering to a halt, she made her way back to her original position between his paws, and half cowered. Pale eyes stared at the brother and sister, apologetic and unsure if she'd been in the right.

" . . .I just wanted t' thank them. . . ." she whispered cautiously to Thayne, as if it were some secret.

Lindir was suffused with warmth and affection as Xieros showed her gratitude. She wasn't alone; Toby was melting under the timid female's actions. When she had prostrated before him, he had leaned down and opened his mouth but she had hoofed it back to his father before he could tell her she was welcome. Instead, he lay down again. You're welcome, lil' one... he thought, watching her in his father's cradling care. Had he scared her again? She seemed already to be frightened of him, and while he wondered what he might have done, he resolved to keep her from being afraid of him while she stayed. It would do no good, and Toby wouldn't stand a female to fear him.

Thayne smiled at the little female, tearing off another strip of rabbit and offering it to her. When she took it, he replied: "I'm sure they understan'." He continued to feed her bits of the rabbit until she was sated and her belly slightly distended from a full meal.

((Well, I'm thinking this is getting close to calling this RP a wrap - what do you think? :3 ))

Xieros couldn't help but be pleased. She had, welcomed or not, said her peace to the black and white wolves nearby. This new family, despite their strange accent, had thus far kept their promises. Despite her nightmares and terror, despite her over-active imagination, the little female could find no ill will towards Thayne, Toby and Lindir.

No, Xieros didn't WANT to find reasons to fear and flee, but her stubborn pup pride and experience-bred caution told her to wait. Wait and see what happened, and be prepared for her own undoing. Thayne couldn't be this sweet to a stranger forever. . . She was a nobody, hailing from a different land, with different scents and different ways of living. Sure, Lindir and Toby had offered to take her with them, to break the instinctive bar-of-ettiquette and travel on to unfamiliar lands. Xieros KNEW she was an outsider, and her stay was far from welcome.

But Toby had kept his promise of feeding her, and Thayne was so graciously ripping her slice after slice. Lindir had been nothing but kind to her, and Thayne had given her his promise that she would not be eaten.

The more Xieros ate, the longer the cogs of her imaginative mind worked. And the longer her wheels kept spinning, the more and more difficult it was for her to keep her resolve to run.

Trust was beginning to grow - a weak limb, stretching out to all three in the Beta's family. Easily brushed aside and broken, it was still a start. With patience, time and a little luck it might very well grow in to something substantial and lasting. Deep down, the little female wanted very much to keep away the fear and mistrust.

If there were any wolves to do it, though, it would be this new family.

Belly bulging with food and drink, the little pup ate until she could eat no more. Her gorging had slowed to a stop, and she stood beside Thayne looking unstead on her feet. Her eyes never left the rabbit, though (or what was left) and Xieros truly wanted to KEEP eating. . . just in case.

This might very well be her last meal.

But with her hunger satisfied, sleep and exhaustion were quick to creep upon the puppy. What started with a long yawn turned in to a sleepy shake of her drooping head. Staggering on her stained white-toed paws, Xieros felt her eyes growing heavier by the minte.

No no no . . . she HAD to stay awake. . .hadn't she?

But Thayne's fur was warm, and the little one felt as if she couldn't stand anymore. Leaning aginst the black wolfs side, any earlier inhibition presantly forgotten, Xieros slid to a groggy slump.

And, without really knowing why, the puppy felt her head rest against Thayne's shoulder, and her entire body (though still sitting) collapsed in to a light dozing sleep. Dreams were beckoning her, and yet . . . . she knew she should stay awake.

A shame that her body refused to listen. Morpheus was quickly calling her home.
