I personally think that it whould be allowed.
remember teh stoy that out teachers used to tell us about the boy and the flute, and how he prayed to hashem with his flute because he didnt know his aleph-bet and didnt knwo how to read. I think that is a lesson that we sould allow people to prey however they feel comfortable.

Halachicly (by the law) Musical instraments (SP??) are Mokseh (not allowed on Shabbos) because, they were used in the Bet HaMigdash. there are 39 Malachot (regulations) for Shabbos, each of them, had somthing to do with the building of the Bet Hamigdash (the Temple) or were used in the Bet HaMigdash. EX= traping. you cant grab or hold an animal i.e. keep it from leaving like locking your dog in the bedroom, because the would trap the animals that they were going to sacrifice. musical instreamnts were played in the Bet HaMigdash during the Kohanim blessing and other such prayers. So it is not allowed in shul on shabbos now. Reformed and Conservatives do play, (i dont know why i never asked when i was conservative i just didnt like it) and Ortodox do not at all, we sing, which in my mind is good enough. also, there are a kind of Hasid, the Bobovers, they are known as the Screaming Hasids, because they are the ones that go "OOOOOYYYYHAAAAA BOOOYAAAHH" when they Daven (pray)

its not somthing that can be changed my rabbis, its Halacha brought down from HaShem. the Rabbis can only build a 'fence" around it. meaning making a rule that stops ppl from doing it. for example

you cant break a branch on shabbos, so the fence that the rabbis made (halacha drabanim) says that you cant ride a horse on shabbos for you might come to break of a branch to switch the horse to make him go faster.

I'm not going to say more, because i dont want to make anyone here an apikores b/c thats just rude heart

It's known that the levi'im would play with instruments at the entrance of the Temple while singing "Shir shel Yom"... The only problem with playing instruments during service is that it reminds of me of the Christians slightly (Organ)...

I think that if it's done right, it can be truly wonderful blaugh .

Sometimes playing instruments leads to lightheaded-ness, so people need to be careful... That may be why it's not widely accepted.

I don't know if everybody is talking about weekday services.
You are not allowed to play instruments on Shabbos! You are not allowed to make music on Shabbos. Personally, when I see organs in one of those conservative or reform temples it makes me sick! The Christians use organs in churches!!!

hmp why should we deprive ourselves of a little music while we pray?!
I think some music can help to be spiritual and, even a little fun for someone young and easliy bored...
But I agree and don't like the organ that much (reminds me of the Phantom of the opera too), how about a simple piano?

Are you talking about weekday services? I still am trying to point out that YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO MAKE MUSIC ON SHABBOS!!!!!!!!!! YOU ARE NOT EVEN ALLOWED TO CLAP YOUR HANDS. I HAVE NEVER HEARD SOMEBODY PLAYING MUSIC AT MY SHUL (CHABAD) DURING SERVICES ON SHABBOS!!

Divash
However, in synagogue, it is not permitted on Shabbat or Yom Tov, because if the instrument should break, one would be tempted to fix it.

It's prohibited everywhere on Shabbat and Yom Tov, isn't it? sweatdrop .

My parents were visiting a synagogue in Tzfat, and they told me that before Shabbat and after they played music in the synagogue.

There is an additional Issur to play 2 instruments at once, though that applies only in Jerusalem.

A note to you all about the reason we may not play musical instruments on Shabbat; It may seem like a "WTF" reason, but it actually is very realistic. Imagine it was an accepted thing to play music. Firstly, who of you even knew it's forbidden to fix something, and besides, it's almost a second instinct for any musician to fix or tune an instrument as you are absorbed in playing.

The fact is, we all do many things absent mindedly, and we absent midedly don't notice that fact! 3nodding
