How TO RP!

If you have never roleplayed and are confused on how to do it I have one thing to say. All of your answers are below...

ok here it is... Rp (role play / role playing) is for fun. You make a story on the computer, it is sort of like makeing a book but much more interactive. You make your own character and us him/her to interact with the other members.

In the roleplay threads it is a little different from this. You write your actions and words. You write your actions regularly as if you were normally typing and you quote your words with one of these * * ( ) (( )) - - [ ]... well you get the idea.
Zorlic continues. ((If you still do not understand than here is an example. You see how I have quoted my words and wrote my first action, which was me continuing to talk, out regularly?)) I shuffle through some papers nervously, not knowing how to actually explain.

It is very easy and you should get the hang of it fast! If you still have trouble after this than ask one of the moderators or post your question here!

Hrm..I've always spoke like this, thought like this, and *acted like this*. I don't have trouble understanding other people's styles though.

Personally, I've always hated the *He did this* Style, because in a RP it's basically like writing a story about what your charachter does, right?

Read novels, how many of them have the '*' sign in them? Exactly.

The way I see it, there're better ways to describe different types of roleplay. The whole "action" style or whatev's; my friends and I have always compared it to a script, so we just call it script style. xD I think it's still a valid form of RP, but it's no excuse to have poor spelling or grammar, either. I've known a few fantastic RPers who use the "script" style.

The other one? We just call it literary style. Generally we use third-person past-literary-tense, but I've seen a good few RPers choose first-person narrative point and present literary tense, too.

Maybe if we set up a simple guide to RP types, and a list of tips from the more literate of players here, we might be able to have a great guide for beginners. X) Hey, maybe we could even have a lessons thread, where people can practice or ask for advice?

I have a special preference for the third-person narrative. I like to think of RP as collaborative writing.

You don't see it in novels. However, a role-play isn't a novel, but I'm not going to argue what's already common knowledge. I can change if the majority of the Guild prefer that I do so, but that's the form I was taught when I first joined this site and if everyone can understand it just the same is it really necessary for me to alter my method?

Public Service Announcement:
What to do when you run into a God-Modder....

1.) what is a God modder?
God modding is the art of making your character powerful beyond what the RP or other characters can deal with. It happens when an RPer feels like their character is the most awesome or super or fabulous of the RP in question and simply does whatever he/she wants to whoever she wants. When confronted they are usually boastful and annoying saying that 'their character would take down your character' and so on and so on. When actual combat ensues they often make themselves immune to all attacks or somehow they can doge everything because they view themselves as 133t.

These people are stupid and should be ignored at all costs...

Not only can a God-Modder annoy everyone in the RP but they can also bring in plenty of other nosy people who feel that they are as awesome or 133t as the God-modder in question, and they will proceed to fight or spam or other such annoyances that don't actually resolve anything. While their intents are noble they are idiots and also should be ignored to the best of your ability.

2.) what to do when I see one?

As explained above the best way to deal with a God modder is to simply ignore them, God modders are stupid and generally only look for attention on themselves, don't provide it and they will eventually go away...

If they don't here are several methods to get rid of them...
1.) Have the thread creator put them in the blocked user's list. this makes his/her thread ignore such annoyances and you can go about RPing or chatting
2.) Tell them to 'STFU U N00B! NO 1 LIKES U! YOU FAIL AT LIFE!"
While this may not get rid of him/her anyone with half a brain will realize your being witty and laugh with you, helping you ignore the person in question.
3.) Report him (Dangerous) this is a risky ploy because you must be polite to the idiot in question from start to finish otherwise the Mods will simply scold you both like children and leave.

3.) Anything else I should know?

Yes, not all God-modders do it intentionality, after all it's their favorite character and they don't want to have him/her face down in the mud getting their asses kicked. Most times a simple notification of this god mod, will be enough to get the person to realize what he's doing and give him enough time to make amends for his behavior. These RPer are to be encouraged not insulted as they are willing to change and edit their mistakes rather then just devolve everything into a shouting match.

I hope this has been informative and helpful trip into the dealings and methods of God modders... or as we like to call them idiot n00bs.

The End!

s**t, that's a hell of a good guide mate. I might have to sticky this thread if people keep up the great advice. Wait a sec, can I sticky topics?

Brb, I'll find out.
EDIT: Sweet, I can. I might put up a guide of my own soon.
EDIT mk. II: Oh, it's already stickied. Wish I could make it an announcement. Might have to kick a** here till I make VC xp

Alright, since the basics have been put down, I declare my post:

Advance Help

for those of you who have gottne the basics down pat, but seek more, hungry for those titanic posts that eat through pages like a hot knife through butter, here is a list of suggestions:

1.) Respect another person's character. -What this means is that a character is made for a purpose,or to follow the storyline. don't make fun of someones character just because of how it acts or looks.(i.e., if someone makes a disfigured or otherwise "slow" character, don't make fun of them for not having an "uber-1337" character in OOC. Feel free to laugh about it,but don't make fun of the player's CHOICE in picking that character.

2.) Never actually hit a character unless you have attained permission or otherwise previous posts would give you strength to the argument.

Auto-hitting is one of the biggest sources of OOC fights in an rp. ALWAYS allow your opponent to respond in kind. For Example:

John is standing in a room with Tom and Anna, and each has a different weapon. john carries a sword, tom a small 6-shot pistol, and Anna has a pair of knives.

john posts first, and says:

John regards the two of them warily, sword raised. he decides Tom is too dangerous to tangle with a sword. John dives behind a handy bit of cover, looking for a handy door or window he can escape too.

Anna posts next, and writes:

Anna had jsut walked into the room, and still has her hand on the doorknob, the two knives slung at her hips. She stares at the two of the,and notices the gun.She screams and ducks back out of the room, shutting and locking the door from the outside.

tom posts last, and writes:

Tom grins maniacally, pulling the gun out, and shoots at the cover John is hiding behind. The bullets pierces the cover, shooting and killing Kohn with a shot through the neck. he pumps 6 shots into John to make sure, then refills his gun from ammo in his pocket and fires through the door, killing Anna as well.

---

now, what should have happened is that Tom should have said:

Tom grins maniacally, pulling the gun out, and shoots towarsd where John had been hiding, hoping that one of the bullets might pierce wha the was hiding from,or that he would pop his head out to look at him and could shoot him.

he turns towards Anna's scream, and fires, but since she shut the door, the bullets ping into the door harmlessly.

See?now John or Anna's players have no argument, and can either counter-attack,or choose to have themselves injured. Like a normal writer,a players characters are not invincible, and many characters will be injured, gain scars, heal, and fight again,or even Die.

((I'll edit more in after my next class<.<-poofs-))

The Thesaurus is your friend...

When writing a post that might happen to be exceptionally long the best way to make sure no spelling or grammatical errors exist is to put it on WORD. This allows you to easily correct the mistakes as well as give you access to at Thesaurus.

What is a Thesaurus?
-book of word groups: a book that lists words related to each other in meaning, usually giving synonyms and antonyms
Encarta ® World English Dictionary © & (P) 1998-2004 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
In short it's something that allows you to pick words with the same meaning as the one you chose, but are different.

Example

Tom coughed up some blood. He stood in the blood drenched alleyway. His blood stained cape fluttered in the wind.

Notice the repeating use of the word ‘blood‘?
Now with a thesaurus…

Tom coughed up some blood. He stood in the gore drenched alleyway. His cape, red with lifeblood, fluttered in the wind.

Which one looks better in terms of posting?

The God-modding was explained very eloquently. However, some things were confused with power-playing. And some of it was just stereo-typing

1) A God-modder is someone who will not get hurt. Jan was right in saying they are immune to everything. And stereo-typically, they are also powerplayers. Also, a god-modder uses your character like its his own.

2) Power-players use overly strong powers with no limits and no weakness. They can shoot one million lazer beams from their eyes and never, not once, get tired. They usually say they can heal themselves. And oftentimes, it ties in with God-modding.

3) Everyone has a bit of God-modder and power-player in us. So don't throw accusations around unless the person is seriously breaking the boundries.

Oops. I thought I'd already replied to this topic with what I'm about to say next, but I guess not. Anyway, its just a minor note. Sometimes a person with multiple accounts will use one to control the other. I frequently do this with my main account. This is NOT a case of goddmoding, since the same person owns both accounts. In this case, they should make it clear beforehand that they are using a mule, but otherwise should not be admonished, unless they take it to rping with characters they don't own. Just thought I'd mention that, though I have yet to see any real eveidence of this in the guild.
