I have a friend who is participating in her school's drum line, and just found out she was pregnant this week. She says she already made an appointment with her doctor, but for now she's guessing she's about one or one and a half months pregnant, somewhere around there. She talks about how she loves drumline so much, but she wants to have this baby. She's worried about marching around with a drum harnace resting on her lower abdomen area, but was also told by someone that since she is only about 1 or 1 1/2 months, she will probably be okay as long as she eats, drinks a lot of fluids (before she practices/performs), and rests when she feels uncomfortable or tired. Indoor percussion shows last about 5 minutes for the actual show, and it takes about 4 minutes of set up and break down, which includes carrying in equipment and pushing large equipment, but practice however, can last for up to 5 hours due to their drumline's history of high standards and achievments.

She is only 16 years old, and will have the baby at 17. I've heard that it is very more likely to lose a baby in the first trimester. Her competitions are over before the end of this month, and because of the information she recieved, she believes she can continue with drumline, but it sounds unhealthy to me.

I just wanted to know if it is OK for her to still compete. She has the lightest drum that in harnaced in the whole drumline, but it still causes pressure. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

She needs to go to the doctor and ask. I honestly wouldn't think that she would hurt the baby as of right now. As long as she does what she's told by the doctor.

I agree that she needs to ask her doctor to be sure but you shouldnt worry to much.... a womans body is designed to keep the growing emryo safe. I am honestly more concerned that that is what she is worried about and not what the future holds for her and this child. Anyways press her to go to the doctor and ask about that and get a checkup and just remember pregnant women arent made of glass.

Right now in the first trimester, especially that early, she should be fine. HOWEVER, she needs to get to the doctor ASAP and explain that situation to them. While yes a woman's body is pretty tough, I've been in band, those drums will not be healthy or able to work through an entire pregnancy.

Really, I think she needs to get her priorities straight. Taking care of this baby (regardless of whether she decides to keep the baby, abort, or adoption) should be a higher priority than something as trivial as drumline (and yes I understand that too, I was a band person for years). It's not something, in my opinion, she's going to be able to do for much longer.
