One thing you get is a hopped up Gaia Towns style on-line user environment, with avatars (complete with racial archetypes and gender), clothes, retarded dance moves, houses, furniture, and a swank mall style community center where you go to join on-line gaming, watch movies, and do other costly on-line activates.
Watch the video.

I like how Sony near damn sued Kotaku for posting the rumours about what's pretty much the only interesting thing coming on the rather dismal looking PS3 scene.

Too bad HOME looks frankly hideous. I'd rather play with Mii's, they're far cuter!

Lord only knows how long it would be before HOME begins to look like 4Chan or Second Life, with all the entertaining perversions one can find in those locales.

"Home" serves no purpose whatsoever except to cause muscle atrophy.
It's like "Why go outside and live life, when you can simulate it on your couch in your underwear eating cheetoes?"

Why work out when you can make your avatar shake his or her booty on the screen in retarded parodies of dance moves that were never popular? Seeing that feature just scared me no end.
And no one has said anything about what HOME would wind up costing the individual user. Lord knows that Sony isn't going to give that out for free.

Sony's Phil Harrisson at GDC stated that Home will be free to all PS3 owners... although nothing was said on whether one has to pay in order to download the more interesting clothes/accessories/furniture.
However, that freeness, coupled with such things as streaming HD Video in lobbies (video screens showing trailers and so on), each owner having their own pad where they can play MP3's or trailers and everything being set in a physics-ruled world, god knows how will it actually work, server wise. I mean, an avatar based forum like this here Gaia breaks down regularly enough...

I saw a glut of press releases yesterday about Sony's HOME release. It seems they will cap the commons to a max of 64 users for public meetings, though I didn't see how they could pick such a small number unless there are many common public rooms. There is also a great deal of report linkage everywhere to prevent the kind of massive stupidity that occurs in places like our Chatterbox and General Discussions. There was also something about user adjustable thresholds for language and content. I can't find any of the stories I read yesterday to confirm this, but here are a couple of press release links. http://www.webwire.com/ViewPressRel.asp?aId=29175http://www.xboxic.com/news/2562http://www.ovum.com/news/euronews.asp?id=5518

Well, on the plus side, it's free.
On the downside, it's probably going to degenerate. When are people going to realize that these methods attract the worst kinds of people from the depths of the internut?

Ever-Infamous Kojiro-san Well, on the plus side, it's free. On the downside, it's probably going to degenerate. When are people going to realize that these methods attract the worst kinds of people from the depths of the internut? Habbo Hotel pool scenario, anyone? Only worse. Picture a line of black break dancers busting moves in a line across one of those public spaces... burning_eyes

Oh my god...
That image won't wash away. Not even the worst SecondLife screengrabs I've seen could rival such a restaging of that event.
And you know the odds of it happening are fairly high.

And you know the odds of it happening are fairly high. You mean /b/'s Habbo invasion was worse than this s**t? Or somethingawful's flying p***s attack on Anshe Chung's press conference? And that's hell of tame for Second Life standards.
