No one had passed this part of the Durem fields for about an hour now: news had travelled fast about the giant, monstrous, partially armored, and entirely drooly thing that had determinedly usurped the area for its mid-morning romp.

The Cerberus baby (the size of a full-grown man, which was cause for alarm in and of itself, if it weren't for the added fact that it had three heads with wide mouths filled with gleaming white teeth worthy of a toothpaste commercial) had escaped their mistress halfway along his early walk -- the proof was in the thick piece of rope tied haphazardly around each of their necks, trailing along behind them as they ran still a little uncoordinatedly on all fours.

One of their noses was in the air, the second pressed to the ground, and the head with the longest attention span was left in charge of navigation. On the whole, the Cerberus was not entirely sure what this strange new scent was that they had located, only that they wanted it very, very much.

Finally locating a soft patch of dirt that seemed more likely than all the others they passed to yield a munchy prize, the Dark Mana Spirit immediately set to digging with sharp claws, sending up dirt and poor innocent daffodils flying grusomely every which way. Only the middle head -- Democritus -- seemed aware that this scent did not actually lie underground, and did not approve of the digging; Aeschylus snarled and Lysimachus nipped at him and the Cerberus continued digging. Unfortunately, as was the case in any body with more than two heads, the majority ruled, and Demo resigned himself to another bout of wasted energy.

ยป Act One:
The great escape.

Gentle snores, muffled by something or another, floated through the mid morning haze. The snow had long since stopped falling and the sun shown pleasantly down on the hustle and bustle of the city. The infant gurgled happily, making a game of watching the curly antenna atop her head flex. Yes, antenna. While relatively human-looking the fact the small thing had a lavender hue to her skin, four pudgy arms, and a pair of gold and purple wings upon her back clearly told people she was far from it. She reached out and gave her antennas a rough tug only to discover they were attached to her head. Giving a slight yelp of surprise she nearly slipped off the girl's lap she was perched in. The inquisitive tyke, curious as to why she'd stopped being talked to, peered up to look at her caretaker. The woman was stretched out across a lawn chair with a book covering the upper half of her face. That seemed to be the source of the snores. They were situated in the nook of an alley right near the store the human woman worked at.

An opportunity. Even though she was barely a day old the young Mana Spirit saw it. Her antenna perked up and the wind rustled her short black hair. She peered over the edge of her caretaker's lap. The concrete of the sidewalk wasn't that far down. With a few calculated wiggles the infant, who had yet to master the art of walking, managed to gently ease herself off the woman's lap. Her bare toes touched the wet cement and she gently relaxed her grip on the jeans she'd been clinging to. But the moment she let go completely her legs, unfamiliar to the weight, betrayed her. She wobbled around with all her arms flailing around but even that wasn't enough to keep her balance. She fell back on her little butt, instantly loathing the cold hard feel of the concrete on her rump. Luckily she hadn't fallen too hard but there was a dull ache down there. She wouldn't cry though! Huffing in a determined fashion she attempted to rise to her feet a few more times but found it completely useless. Her legs might as well've not been there.

Sniffling in frustration Echidna cast her owner a glance. Still snoring away. She sat a few moments longer, formulating a plan as brilliant as a one-day-old could. She scratched her head with her left upper hand and crossed the bottom two, imitating what her caretaker would sometimes do. It hit her! Surely those four arms plus her two legs could be useful in some way for getting her around. She uncrossed her lower arms and slowly made to get up in an upright position as if to walk. Instead she merely grew unblanced and leaned forewards until her hands hit the pavement with a minute 'slap' sound. Her knees grit against the rough texture of the concrete as she experimentally moved forewards. Success! While not the most comfortable method of walking Echidna now had access to the skill of crawling. She gave a happy bout of baby garble. She started to make her way down the sidewalk. Luckily it was a weekday thus almost everyone was busy doing something or another. It was slow going but she was making progress none the less. Finding it easiest just to use her forearms and legs she crossed her lower set of arms. The act of crawling amused her greatly. Her eyes widened, black eyelashes bobbing up and down gracefully with each blink.

The world was her playground. Little did she know what she was headed towards. The building she was crawling beside ended abruptly and she found herself peering out into a large field. To her disapointment it was empty at the moment. But the dead brown grass, yet to show signs of spring, beckoned to her. She made her way towards the left center of the vast expanse of dirt and the occasional spit of tall grass. She let herself plop down right before reaching a patch of high grass. She let her legs and arms rest and yawned loudly. The effort of getting there had taken a lot out of her. Her eyelids drooped as she noticed the lack of energy she had once possessed. But then something yellow caught her eye. She looked up. A butterfly with yellow wings fluttered just above her head. Her eyes widened at once. It was pretty! With all her arms she reached up for it. Surprisingly it decided to land right in the palm of her upper right hand. She drew it close to her face and examined it. The wings had two black spots on them each. She peered at the wings a little more before making a connection. She took her eyes off the butterfly and looked at her own back. She flexed her own set of butterfly wings and looked back at the butterfly.

The sound of approaching footsteps made her stop what she was doing --which was making and attempt to place the butterfly in her mouth. She closed her mouth and perked up her curly antenna. They barely peered above the long grass. Something was digging. While she did not know that yet she could hear the giant wads of earth hitting the earth. It was time to investigate. She shooed away the butterfly with a way of her hand. Assuming the crawling position she began the trek through the tall grass. It made her stop several times to itch her face and arms but eventually she reached a clearing. Manuvering herself from her grassy hold she sat herself down a few feet from what seemed to be a giant three-headed dog. She stared in wide-eyes wonder at the beast. She wasn't directly behind it but a few feet to the left. A condemed dandelion hit her atop the head. Her face twisted in a comical look of disgust as she shook her head like a dog shaking water from its pelt. After that she proceeded to watch the puppy for a few minutes. It was about five times as big as she, who was scarcely a hair shorter then a full grown male's knee. He could eat her up in one bite if he pleased.

However the young one did not see it that way. The big puppy looked soft. She scooted closer a bit, now just narrowly avoiding the fine spray of dirt the Dark Mana Spirit was tossing up. Finally she plucked up her strength and when the big puppy had stopped spraying dirt behind him and more to the side she crawled over to his hind leg, managed to get to her stubby feet, and using his leg for a support gave him a nice big hug with all four of her arms[which she couldn't even get around the entire width of the beastie's leg]. She crooned happily even though he was not exactly as soft as she had thought.

So absorbed was the young beastie in defacing the property of the park that they did not notice the presence or scent of the newest arrival until it had attacked their leg. At least, this was the only proper interpretation of the motion, wasn't it? All three heads turned various degrees to inspect the challenger -- one to the left, one to the right, and the middle stooped and curled its neck to peer between their legs.

"Man," said Aes somewhat doubtfully in a raspy voice with vocal cords that seemed unsettlingly inappropriate for human speech; it was probably he who shook the leg the offending creature was clinging to as if trying to shed water droplets. "Eat?" asked Lysi hopefully, grinning at Echidna with a decidedly predatory smile.

It was Demo who said firmly, "No. Spirit." And with that, the Dark Spirit began to turn as if wanting to face her -- of course only bringing her along for the ride -- and finally realizing that they would not get to see her face-to-face this way, sat. Their tail began to thump against the ground like a loud drum. ("
Not eat," repeated Lysi a little sulkily for confirmation, as if he had to use the repetition of this simple information to commit it to memory. He did not seem entirely pleased about having to relocate a rather tasty-looking creature to an inedible status.)

"Hello." said the Cerberus in three voices, staring out at empty space in front of them.

The force of Cerberus' shake made Echidna fall backwards onto her rump. She twisted up her face in a comical pout and crossed her arms across her chest, sitting cross-legged now. After a moment of this, however, the stubborn infant got back up and clung with all her might to the creature's hind leg. She wouldn't be deterred from her hug so easily! When she began to move she laughed. What fun! When they stopped she frowned at looked up at the puppy's three heads. Her antenna flexed in annoyance. She rocked to and fro and whined. These motions were supposed to indicate she wanted another ride. Her whining became louder. He wasn't moving fast enough for her likes.

This reaction confused the Cerberus, who had at least been expecting a 'hi' back, or at least a friendly whack. One of their heads, Aes -- the one on the left -- craned confusedly at an angle in another attempt to locate and visually confirm the existance of this new Spirit.

The other two heads attempted to follow him, and so did the rest of their body, until the Cerberus found itself essentially attempting to chase its own hind leg. The dark spirit started at a slow walk -- as if trying to sneak up on its own behind -- and, rife with frustration and boundless energy, soon began eagerly chasing itself (and Echidna) round and round in fast circles.

The Cerberus soon had to stop again though, staggering, wobbly, and unsuccessful, to collapse in a dizzy heap on top of a flowerbed.

The ride hadn't turned out to her liking after all.

At first it had been fun when the puppy had been going slow but soon her head had began to spin. She wasn't partial to her now blurred vision, either. Echidna found it rather difficult to keep her hold on his leg and was forced to let go, stumbling backwards with her arms flailing every which way. It was inevitable she was going to sprawl backwards no matter how good a balance she had.

And that's what she did. Luckily a particularly low and dense patch of grass and flowers broke most of her fall. She was still a bit winded. Now looking up at the sky, Echidna wondered where the puppy had gone. She sat up, ignoring the light throb in her head. Scratching her head she glanced around, her eyes inquiring as to where Cerberus had gone to rather then words.

She found him in a heap across the lot. What the heck was he doing over there? Slowly Echidna rose, taking little notice of the poor flowers she had crushed. She walked around the hulking figure that was Cerberus, her walk still a tad woobily, and eventually made it to right in front of his face. Faces. She stood before the middle head and tilted her head. She then giggled. He was a funny puppy.

She sat down a few inches in front of his nose. On a whim she raised her arms up, hooking her chubby fingers into claws, and her face contorted into a snarl. She was making an attempt to look as scary as the doggy. "Rawr!" She growled, her nose and lips wrinkling in a snarl.
