Equus was exhausted when he finally got deep into the pack's lands. His neck was on fire, warmth still trickling down his shoulder and leg with every movement. His wild bolt from Tiberius had slowed to a tired trot once within the safety of Phib's territory, but that had now slowed to a slow limping walk. He had never been injured, so all he knew to do now was to go report to his alpha.
The starred wolf had grown significantly. His lanky, leggy frame had braodened some, and there was much more muscle now than when he'd first met Phib. He was still untried and young, but he had filled out into a handsome adult. He had been hoping Phib was pleased with him, and had wondered where his place in the pack would be.
Now he was sure he'd be demoted to omega. Foolishly facing off with a strange wolf that turned out to have lost his mind... getting himself deeply bitten... these were not the actions of a mature pack member. He was an idiot. But Phib should know what danger lurked so near their lands. And so that was his only thought as he limped through the growing light of false dawn.

The long black wolf lay resting upon a large mossy stone, peering out across the woods with a stiff expression. Things to do. Always things- couldn’t steady. At long last the snows had settled, and with the melt the old wolf was bitterly counting yet another year passed. Was he old yet? He had a feeling he was- but decided to ignore it. Perhaps he’d be like his father in his old age an assume he’d never grow older then this.
But his thoughts were flushed away as soon as the faint scent of blood caught his nose. At once the black figure was up- his back curving and tail draping across the rocks. Another dark figure was limping forwards- head down and body swaying.
“Equus?” Phib questioned suspiciously, and stalked forward.

He heard his Alpha's voice, and raised his head to gaze at the approaching wolf, seeing the aggressive stance, the wary look. Yes, he had failed him. Surely he had. He went to his knees before Phib, panting and faintly whining.
"I am sorry, my Alpha... I shoud have known better. But I had to run. I had no choice," He discovered he was having trouble thinking straight. He shook his head to try and clear it, but his first serious wounding was taking a toll on the young adult. It still trickled sullenly, but his fur was matting over the bite mark, helping to stem the blood. Soon it would cease to bleed altoghether. He didn't know it yet, but that would help him to feel steadier and think clearer.
For now, all he knew was the agony of defeat, only made all the more painful by the feeling he hadn't done right by his pack somehow. But Phib had to know about the mad wolf. "The wolf... near the border... mad!" he panted urgently. "What should... I do?" He met Phib's gaze hopefully, wanting to help, wanting to make up for his personal mistake.

Phib pulled his head back as the young male fell before him. Curiously, he lowered his head and smelled at the top of his forehead as words began to quickly fall out of Equu’s mouth. He smelled blood stronger still- and after a careful look across the black wolf’s coat- he noted the trickling of blood still slipping out of the bite mark. “What is this?” He asked in an almost rhetorical manner, before quieting as the other wolf attempted to explain.
It didn’t take longer then a few moments for the old king’s tail to bristle and raise above his hips. A mad wolf? It had better not have been Amarette making trouble. His tolerance of the lone was getting to a shatter point, and eventually, Amélie’s concern for her would not be able to outweigh his disdain. But as it was- he’d never know Amarette to be much of a biter either.
“A mad wolf?” He balked bitterly and seethed. “At what border?” This was what he hired guards for. But then again- he also did consider that perhaps Equus had simply been being young. He’d always had scraps as a child. But even scraps, he didn’t like knowing that someone had bloodied up a wolf under his keep.

Equuleus was still feeling ashamed, and his resolve to make it up to his hero solidified. He clambered to his paws and did his best to stand upright before his alpha. "I'm sorry, Phib, I'll be more specific." He took a deep breath, shuddering his hide. "I was wandering several leagues beyond the pack's border to the northwest. I wandered too near another wolf, unknowing, and he took offense. He stalked me, mocked me. He looked like the sky from night to dawn."
He took another deep breath, a little steadier this time. "I should have backed away, but i didn't. I stood my ground, because the lands were not claimed by any pack, and he was only looking for trouble." A soft sight escaped him and his ears wilted. "And that trouble was that he was bigger than I am. I tried to defend myself when he charged me, but with him bigger and heavier, it wasn't long before he'd torn my ruff." His tail tucked under then, and his head lowered. "And then I ran, alpha. I'm sorry."
With his head still low, he finished his tale. "The mad wolf chased me right to your border, where he wisely stopped. Whoever he is, he knows enough to fear you and the pack." Tale finished, he waited to hear what Phib would say about the whole ordeal. Oh how he ached with his failure! All he wanted to do was be like this proud alpha before him, strong and capable. But it didn't seem he was succeeding whatsoever in that pursuit.
