I play a Night Elf hunter. For obvious reasons, I prefer to keep my enemies at arms length. Or better yet, destroy them before they get inside my bow-range.
Does shadowmeld help you do extra damage on the first shot, or something else useful? Becuase I can't figure it out, and it's bugging me.

Shadowmeld is just a stationary weak version of stealth. It use to be possible to do a full cast or aim shot or a heal before breaking it, but it breaks the moment you try and do something.
It's only good for drinking/eatting, no one will see you. You cast Shadowmeld after you begin to eat and drink.

Hmm, not so useful as I thought then.
