Starla didn't even seem to hear him. White ears sank back against black and yellow fur. Her small frame pressed against the wood as if she wished it would absorb her and take her away from the horrible prospect the rain brought. It was water that drove her into madness and water that kept her there. Her wide, violet eyes could only frantically eye the drops of water that slide along the entrence to the nitch. She could not forget how close it was-could not shake the feeling that it would get her. Not while it was still there, not while it was present in plain site. Her nerves felt like they were burning away, fading, but at least she wasn't out in the rain. Who knows what would have happened to her this time.

Fierj had no idea what was going on with her anymore except that the rain must stir some horrible crippling memory. He pressed into the entrance of the hollow, filling it almost completely with his fur, shutting out the sight of the rain and nearly all light into the base of the tree. This he did as a favor, because he felt sorry for her. It couldn't be helped, her pitiable stance had plucked a heartstring. The fur along his back was soaked, though he could feel the summer rain starting to ease. Finally, perhaps this increasingly awkward situation wouldn't last much longer. Still though, he kept speaking to her in a soft voice, even as she refused to hear him, "Its alright striped one. The rain cannot get you here, I've shielded you from it. Don't be afraid." His eyes, had she been able to see them in the dim light, were soft and confident, though he was finding it slightly difficult to deal with these reactions that he did not understand. Hopefully she would be well again as soon as the water stopped falling, and it was threatening to do so soon. Then, just maybe, this harsh yet fearful she-wolf would be more willing to talk.

Suddenly the vision of rain vanished from her sight, as if god had answered her call. But she had never believed in god, for why would someone exist who would let the life be a living hell? But at first her mind was still held by terror, the throbbing of her heart echoing in her ears as she stared at where the rain had been dripping. She blinked a few times as her heart began to slow, her shivering still prominant. Finally she seemed to realize he was blocking the storm-shielding her.

She gaped, her nerves still shot. "W-w-what are you doing?" She asked, her voice hoarse as if she had been yelling, though she had barely said anything that day, "W-why?" The world had turned upsidedown.

Certainly Fierj was nowhere near a god, but he couldn't leave a wolf who had become so helpless alone to bear a fear. No matter how illogical that fear seemed to be. And so he remained a shield as the rain turned to mist. His one ear that was within the tree perked curiously in the darkness. Why, he was doing the only thing that was right, wasn't he? Protecting her from the storm was the proper thing to do, even if she had snapped at him earlier.

Fierj eyed the tiny female almost hidden before him curiously, his soft gray eyes piercing the darkness. "I'm protecting you from what you don't want to be near, because you seemed so afraid of it. Is that wrong? If so I'm sorry."

Protecting her? Wrong? Starla burst out laughing, tears escaping her eyes like acid. Wrong! Ha! It only defied nature, defied fate. "You're a fool!" she gasped inbetween breaths, her giggles shaking her unstable muscles as she slid to her belly, unable to hold herself up any longer from the stress of her fear. "You don't protect strangers, especially not someone like me." Her last word came out a cynical sneer. People amazed her. He might not know it, but he was protecting a future murderer. Haha, how noble indeed!

It took heavy resisting for Fierj not to narrow his eyes in a flicker of aggrivation at her confusing behavior, yet still he did not move from his post. Water trickled down his back, the last fierceness of the clouds passing. No, he hadn't done anything out of the ordinary for himself, and he quickly recovered his composure, hardly batting an eye. This whole day was getting stranger by the moment, the least he could do was hold himself together against the torrent. His tail swished lazily, thoughtfully across the wet grass behind him as he stared at her, sprawled out on her belly. Keeping her safe was not foolish, he reminded himself. His concience would not have let him do otherwise, because it was the honorable thing to do, no matter what she felt.

"I do not claim to be wise, but I am not foolish. You're just as worthy of being kept safe as anyone else." His words held a slight tinge of sadness at her condition. The poor female was just a little bit out of her mind it seemed, and that was a shame. He wondered why it was so. He wondered if she would tell him even if he asked. Probably not, but he was going to try anyway. Some measure of sense had to get through to this odd femme. "And whats so bad about you, that it is wrong to protect you?"

"You really want to know?" Starla cackled, for some reason finding the whole situation hilarious. He said he wasn't a fool, ha! She didn't know what water he was drinking, to be thinking such stupid thoughts! She looked at him with eyes drowned in hate and bitterness, yet she held a grin on her maw. "The waters of this world stole my life from me-everything except one thing. One little purpose..." She sneered, baring white fangs, her eyes seeming to flash with a fire, "...to make my sister pay for all she did."

Quietly the yellow ear folded back, no longer perked to attention. Fierj let out a heavy sigh, gathering himself to confront this touch of madness. He refused to believe she was so lost in a world of revenge. Look what it had done, this tiny female was glaring hatefully at one who only wanted to keep her from something she feared. Strange indeed. It was a long silence before he spoke. The firey male knew she wouldn't be going anywhere with him blocking the exit. Certainly she may have been trying to scare him with that fire behind her eyes, but for a nonviolent wimp, he was surprisingly difficult to bowl over.

"The only purpose?" His words began soft but piercing. "And then, will you live in a world of total darkness and nothingness..." He curled, shutting out the light into the hollow completely, casting her in his pitch black shadow. ".. Or can that fire in you be redirected I wonder? You think that because you want some horrible revenge, I should not have shielded the rain. I believe you are lost and need something to live for. Even with an entire life taken in one fell swoop a strong wolf may find purpose, and certainly you are a strong wolf." Fierj moved slightly, and let light back into the hollow, spilling down onto Starla. It revealed the passing of the spring rainstorm, and clear daylight.

"You're an idealistic prat," Starla spat, her brows only furrowing further. Who was he to lecture her? He who probably hadn't suffered much at all in his lifetime. Bah. Only sheltered fools talked like him. "This is all that is left for me," she sneered, baring fangs, "After what Ieshia did, there is no other path open." The small wolfess made no attempt to get past him, even with the storm past. The world was still wet, rain or no, and she had no desire to go out in it again.

"And you're an overly negative pain." Fierj finally scoffed and wrinkled his nose. She had no idea what had been done to him, what a rainstorm meant. It took strength of will and an urge to barrel forward with life no matter what to get through such a thing, and apparently she was lacking. "You think whatever happened to you was so bad, I've lost my whole family. They left me alone, kicked me to the curb. I don't even have anyone left to take vengance on. Believe me, its not worth staying so damn worked up over." He was beginning to seethe beneath his usually cool surface. Starting to have quite enough of this. If she was so bent on drowning in what couldn't be fixed, maybe there really wasn't much he could do. He had half a mind to get up and shake water all over her, and then run. Not that his concience would ever actually let him do such a thing.

"It's not the same!" Starla spat, a small growl rumbling through her being. How dare he talk like he knew her? Not even her own living relative knew her, so why would he have that right? Her ears pulled forward, quivering in agression, "I dedicated my life to my family, starved myself, bled my paws dry for them and all I get is a dead brother and a living sister who gets to live in perfect bliss because she chooses to forget and leave me to remember everything!" The last bit of her rant became high-pitched, frantic and furious, "I have nothing left because of her!"

Ears folding back, Fierj drew himself away from her, a sad yet scowling look shadowing him. "If you have nothing left, and refuse to try and build anything again, I don't know how much more I can say. But if you are truely that persistant, I'm certain you can find something positive worth living for, since the only things genuinely worthy of dedicating ourselves to are the good parts of life." After this speech, he drew himself up and away from the hollow, his soaked fur letting water roll from it freely. He had to resist the urge to shake.

The fire wolf paused before slinking off to give Starla one more glance. Her unerlying fierceness made him pin his ears backwards in a submissive posture out of habit, though she was smaller than him considerably. He leaned his muzzle a bit closer and stated softly, "I am sorry for your losses, honestly. If all I can do is keep you out of the rain once, even against your wishes, then I am privaleged to have helped." He tipped his nose low politely, and turned to slink off.

Starla snorted, letting her glare follow him as he slunk away. ******** nosey freak. Why couldn't anyone mind their own business? And why was everyone a preacher? Everyone thought they knew best. Well ******** them all. They knew nothing. She growled to herself and curled up in her small space. Best to sleep until the land dried.
