The young male had been skirting the borders of Phib's lands, eager to do something heroic in which to impress the dark alpha. For since moving to the lands Remiel had been quite intent on proving his worth to Phib. It seemed that he never got his chance, however, for he was always left with nothing to do. No hunting, no fighting. He wanted to grow up strong, to be a guardian angel to keep his father safe from harm, especially since his siblings and mother had been taken from him.
He yawned and stretched out on the fallen log that he was using as his sentry point and lowered his muzzle to rest between his forepaws.
Oh it was another boring day!
He was half-considering turning back to go to his father's den when up ahead in the mist he thought he saw something moving. Just what it was he was not sure but instantly he was on the lookout. He leapt to the ground, enjoying the loud crunch of snow beneath his paws.
The blizzard had renewed the fresh white blanket and it please Rem very much to see that snow was not yet coming to an end. For though this did mean a lack of food it did mean fun! Snow was so strange and weird and it made his paws tingle!

Equus had been following this herd for miles now. The lead female was very watchful, and tended to seem to predict where he would be, and move away from that point. When he was younger, this would have frustrated him to no end. But he had learned well from watching the older wolves, especially Phib. So he simply kept back and followed them at a distance.
His prey was an old doe, far beyond her years of bearing. It looked like she had twisted an ankle or had some other injury weaken it, for she limped terribly. Her tracks were clear amongst the others, her uneven steps and occasional partial falls marking her seperate from the rest to his keen lupine senses.
And now she had fallen behind. The lead doe was very clearly aware of his presence, and had for some time now been nipping and nudging the elderly member of her herd to urge her on, but it was of no use. The feeble doe was going slower and slower, and the herd was moving on without her, and swiftly at that. Equus coiled himself, tensing for what might be a reasonably easy kill.

He gave a low chuff, his sides quivering as he raised his nostrils and tested the air. For a moment he could smell only ice and bitter cold, yet a moment later and the scent of wolf and deer mingled as one.
His excitement brimmed and in the next moment he was streaming beneath the skeletal trees, panting heavily as he tried to reach the hunt. Maybe he would be needed, or maybe he could watch and learn. He wanted to yowl and howl and yip with joy but instead he remained silent.
He broke from the trees and literally flew from the bank of trees, soaring forwards to land neatly onto all fours. His paws met the ground with a strange, hollow noise and in the next moment he found himself skidding and slipping helplessly. A yelp broke free from him as he slid along the frozen water, headlong into the opposite bank. A flurry of white snowlfakes rose up around his form and around him clumps of snow rained down from the trees.

Off to his left, as he began loping towards the now terrified doe, he heard an odd scratching, scraping sound, followed by a startled yelp. Distracted, he turned his head towards the sound of the distressed wolf. The wind was blowing the wrong way for his nose to tell him that it was indeed a wolf, but the yelp was clearly that of a young and quite surprised wolf.
The doe took this as her cue to depart as fast as she could hobble. The black wolf glanced towards the slowly fleeing prey, but shrugged and turned to pad towards the possible packmate. He knew the doe couldn't go far, nor very fast. He should have time to discover the trouble and return to her trail before she got out of range.
He broke into a lope and headed towards the last noise of something connecting with a tree, led also by the noise of that tree losing it's load of snow. He topped a rise in time to see a last branch bend and let the snow slip from it's grasp before snapping back up to wave indignantly. Normally the curious wolf would have spared a moment to ponder if trees felt such things as indignation, but movement beneath the uneven snowbank told him where the victim was.
With a reassuring bark, he bounded forward and dug at the now soft loose snow. "I'm here, never fear!" he sang out, oddly feeling excited to come to the rescue of a fellow wolf.

His head and shoulders had been buroied in the snow from his landing and the white poweder dotted his back. Yet when he had heard nothing he now heard a scraping sound and...singing? He pulled with all his might, breaking free with a small yelp.
He stumbled back a few steps, lost his balance, and fell down hard on his rump. He gave a loud sneeze, shook his head to clear his ears and beamed back, sheepishly.
Are you...a hero? He questioned genuinely, his serious tone almost amusing.

Equus' tail was waving merrily as his new companion broke free and sneezed the last of the intruding snow from his nostrils. His paws danced a pattern in the snow, and he nearly laughed at the question.
"No, I am a brother in a time of need. What led you to bury yourself in the snow like a bear?" His paws slowed as he asked this, and his rump finally met the snow, though his tail still swished behind him, creating a curved fan in the snow behind him. His ears were pricked forward and tongue lolling, while his eyes danced with good-natured laughter. His whole demeanor was one of friendliness and amusement.

Remiel's ears twitched madly about his head for a moment and then he gave a wide, wolfish grin and shifted himself slightly in the snow. It wasn't the nicest stuff to sit on!
Well I...slipped. His ears drooped sheepishly as he remarked on his clumsiness. The water is all...tough. He explained, pointing his nose back towards the icy surface. And my paws didn't like it very much. I like the snow though, the snow is fun, though my pap don't like it much. His tail wagged too and for a moment he seemed thoughtful.
A brother in time of need? So surely you are a hero!

The starred wolf chuffed at the younger wolf in a half laugh, half embarassed way. "No hero... just a hunter." He padded forward and shoved gently at his new friend shoulder to shoulder. "I am Equuleus, of the Outrider pack. Who are you, little brother?"
As he spoke, he turned and headed back the way he'd come, slowly wagging tail encouraging the other wolf to follow him and accompany him as they talked. Might as well get back on the trail of that doe while he had the chance. After all, he now might have some help with bringing her down and carting her back closer to home. They were on the outer edges, and it was a long haul back to where some of the others were denned.

He grinned and got up, following alongside his new friend with a brisk and bouncy trot. He was eager to make friends and just as eager to hunt with them.
I'm Remiel. He replied with pride, he loved his name and the meaning it held. My father says it was the name of a great guardian wolf. He added with a nod, and I'm of the Outriders too! I'm trying to get stronger so I can prove to Phib that I'm capable of being a good defender!
He moved so that his paws fell into the prints of another animals, glad to see that the deer were easily given away in such conditions.

Equus' tongue fell out of his mouth to loll, dripping with saliva, as he again caught the scent of the doe. It seemed it had picked up a bit of speed as hope grew. Ah, but soon he and his friend would steal those hopes from her, and feast upon her flesh this day!
"A proud name, to be sure. You sound quite proud of your sire." He broke into a lope, his paws creating soft crunches that often blended with the echoing pops and creaks from the snow-laden trees. "Let us make him proud of you too. There is an injured and old deer this way." His nose pointed forwards eagerly. "Show me how you can track her, and we shall bring her down together!"
Joy burst from his throat and he howled the hunt, excitement a fire in his blood, coursing through his veins and warming his muscles, urging him on to higher speeds as his paws flew through the snow. He glanced over at his packmate, the fervor of the hunt burning in his eyes. "Come, little brother! Lead the hunt!"

He nodded, yup, my pap is all I have. We're pretty close. He gave a small 'woof' and threw himself after his companion. He wanted to give a howl of excitement but again he supressed himself. He needed to be quick, silent and deadly as the shadows themselves.
Then suddenly Equus gave a call of his own and Remiel was quick to join him. A feverish burning began in the back of his throat and the sound punctuated up into the air. It filled him with strength and his paws tore up the ground as he ran.
One would never feel truly alive until they had been on a hunt.
This way! He called, bounding like a rabbit between the trees, breaking out into a path made by the deer themselves. The hedgerow had been pushed back and the snow had been so trodden that it had turned to slush. Yet Rem continued on until he could see movement and smell the herd upon the breeze.
His mouth watered.

The black wolf gamely followed his younger counterpart. He had faith in the young one, that he would succeed in the hunt. Even so, he felt it his role to caution, to guide, and to assist. So he yipped at the hindquarters bounding ahead of him.
"Don't forget, we are seeking the old one. Her left hind foot is twisted, and her muzzle is white with age. But watch for the...," but they burst upon the herd just then. The old one had caught up with them it seemed, and the lead doe had turned the herd to face them. As they burst from the brush on Equuleus' last word, her flailing hooves met them, cleaving the air above their heads.
"Split!" he barked the order, darting one direction, hoping Ramiel would know to dodge the other direction. He snarled and snapped his jaws at the doe as he charged by, distracting her from the less experienced wolf. "Now go! Find the old one and drive her away! Ware the hooves!" he called between dodges and leaps.
He spun finally, head low and lips drawn back in a maniacal grin of a snarl. This was one determined deer. She advanced on him, ears flat and feet ready to crush him into a bloody pulp on the white snow. He had time to thank the stars that marked his fur that there was no buck with them at this time. He feinted at her and darted away again, casting a glance to see how his companion fared.

He twisted his head back, eyes wide and teeth clipping together. It had been such a shock that it took a moment for him to regain his senses, but when he did he was off like a shot. The snow stumbled him slightly but he managed to duck beneath flailing hooves to wind around and behind the attacker.
He paused to glance at Equus, glad to see that he was doing okay and with a quick nod he darted towards the herd.
His heart thumped in his throat as he zipped this way and that, winding around them in a hesitant manner. He wasn't too sure what to do and these deer looked menacing now that they were close up. Even his father had never successfully hunted these beasts!
He growled, pinned back his ears and sidled towards them, snapping out at the injured one with powerful jaws. The doe gave a high bleat and again the herd were off, stampeding through the trees with tremendous power.
The injured one was caught in the flurry of fear, twisting and turning and trying her best to remain standing. The snow made it difficult, however, and Remiel could see her losing her balance even before he pounced.
With his heart pounding he soared towards his target, connecting with her side. His jaws locked onto her shoulders, missing her neck and for a moment he clung to her side, desperate not to fall. She lashed at him with her skull, bumping heads with the wolf sharply.
He dropped to the ground, stunned, and backed up, moving to drive her back towards Equus.
