No, no I don't. It has a negative connotation in Japan, does it not?

IdiotbyDefault The thing to remember while in Japan, is that calling yourself or someone else an otaku is a pretty strong statement/insult. Mainstream Japanese culture and society seems not to understand otaku to a point, and recent events have been damaging otaku relations since (aka the akiba truck plowing and stabbing incident a month ago, and the article that was posted about Tsutomu Miyazaki). You can say you like anime/manga here though. I found that you can like things that would typically get you called a nerd in the states, without getting the labeling of otaku here. Having a hobby that's casual and not borderline obsessive isn't enough to be considered an otaku here. My opinion on the matter, in short, yes it has negative connotations in Japan. Nerds are considered here to have some sort of connection into society or some purpose, but the hardcore otaku in Japan shun social norms and are different that they may be on the fringes of society.

True enough. I myself sometimes forget about that. I've been called a "nerd" alot of my life, but it's never been anywhere near as harsh as it seems "otaku" is meant to be (in japan).
