Name of Nightmare: Valerina

Fear: Mirrors

Home: Operis

NM's Personality: Shy and reserved, fearful and awkward. Does her best to try and stay away from others, fearing for her own safety and the fear of gazing into someone's eyes and seeing a reflection. Rarely speaks, and when she does, her words cannot be understood for they come out backwards. Slightly jumpy, scared of the dark. Hates the shadows, loves the sun light. Enjoys breaking mirrors and causing her human to jump and scream. She does not enjoy thinking, or laughing, or anything that includes 'happy'. Valerina does, however, like copying the images of others. She cannot actually become what the image is, simply what it looks like. It could be a human, an animal, or even the appearance of another nightmare. However, in order for this to happen, the object or person would have to look directly at their reflection in her mirror. And even in a full form, her shadow would remain the same of her orignal state.

Name of Human: Tev

Human's History: Tev grew up just like every other teenage girl. Well, almost. She was always the tomboy of her family, and was the most boyish out of all three of her sisters. She never cared about the way she acted or looked. She cut her hair short herself, loved wrestling with her two brothers and guy friends, and loved making fun of her sisters, who always spent hours in front of the mirror. Tev loved to play in the dirt, go in the woods, swim in dirty old lakes. Anything guys would do, she would do.

By the time Tev was in high school, her freshman year, she was still the same. She cared even less about her looks. But rumors started going around the school saying that she was a lesbian, and was the reason why she acted like a guy all the time. Well, Tev's first crush, a boy named Robby, didn't believe any of it. He was the school's star player on the soccer team, and one of the hottest guys in school. And he was a Junior. When he asked her to go with him to Homecoming, she said yes in a heartbeat. From that time on, she started wearing fancy skirts and nice clothes, cleaned her hair, and started wearing make up.

The night of the dance, Tev was obsessing. She wore a long black dress, high-heeled shows, and a lot of make up. She waited at the door for her date to come, and was so excited when she heard the doorbell ring. Robby took her to dinner, payed for her meal, and took her to the dance. While she was taking a break, she went into the bathroom to fix her make-up. It was then, when five Juniors and 2 Sophomores cornered her. They were mad at her for taking 'their' Robby. They locked the door and tied her hands behind her back, tied her ankles, and beat her. They broke one of the mirrors and cut her face and took a pair of scissors and cut her hair. After about an hour, the left her in one of the showers and left. When finally someone else found her, they helped her up and called the hospital.

Tev was heartbroken. Robby didn't even come to see her. And after a few days of being in the hospital room, she finally gazed at herself in the mirror. Her face had not healed fully yet, and to her she seemed so ugly that she was afraid of looking at her reflection. There was even a jagged piece of glass in her bottom lip. Part of the mirror. Ever since then, Tev has been afraid of looking at herself, or even looking at a mirror. It soon became her greatest fear...

[ One month after Tev walked out of the hospital... ]

"Tev? Are you going to school today?"

"Yeah."

"You want me to help you pick out something to wear?"

"No, I've got something already."

"Oh, okay..."

Tev sighed. Ever since she came home from the hospital, her sisters had been so much nicer. It wasn't like it was a bad thing, it just wasn't normal. And besides, it wasn't because they were nice or anything. They were just giving her pity because of what happened.

sdrahS....

However, even though she returned home, she refused to go to school. Not because she was afraid, simply because she didn't want others to see her the way she was. It took some convincing, but she finally decided to go with with her older brother, Edward. Not to mention she was tired of hiding.

derettahS....

Tev slipped on her shoes and turned her music stereo off, walked out of her room without failing to slam the door on her way out. Apparently Edward was already waiting for her at the door. She hardly glanced up at him before walking out the door. She also knew her brother was going to try and speak with her on their way to school. That was the only bad thing about going back to school.

gnippiR.... gniraet.... gnikaerb....

Besides, the voice in her mind was getting a little bit annoying. Or was it?

"Edward, do you hear it?"

The brunette blinked and stared at his sister with a weird stare.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Sis, are you gonna be okay going to school? I mean, shouldn't you wait a little while?"

As always. Out of all her family, Edward was the only one who was against her going back. And as always, he was the only one who truly cared.

Tev shrugged.

"The sooner the better. Either way I have to face them."

"Yea but, still. You should have asked the doctor about this..."

"And what would he say, Edward? 'Your daughter was such low self-esteem and doesn't need to go back to school for another couple months.' C'mon Edward, get real."

"So there's no changing your mind, huh?"

"Not unless I drop dead on the street."

t'ndluoW taht eb a ynnuf thgis...

"It's laughing at me," Tev mumbled softly under her breath, not actually realizing that she had said anything.

"What is?" Edward asked, looking concerned again.

"Nevermind. Let's hurry, please."

What is that? What is that sound? Make it stop... the horrible sound.

'derettahS.... nekorB.....'

"Who's there?"

Tev was at a complete loss. Everywhere she looked, broken mirrors. Everywhere she looked, darkness. And no matter what she did, that horrible image in the mirror would not leave her mind. It nagged at her, made fun of her, mocked her. She couldn't get it to shut up.

'enolA... nettogroF....'

"Answer me! Who is there?!" She shouted, clutching tightly to the sides of her head, shielding her ears from the childish voice that called out to her.

'Tehe... yllis elttil lrig. diarfA fo reh nwo wodahs.'

Tev turned around quickly, noticing that all of the mirros had vanished. And there in front of her stood a little girl. What was she doing there?

The girl had long, stunning white hair and wide, haunting crystal blue eyes, and her ears reminded Tev of a little elf. She wore a blue kimono-type dress, and had blue dots painted under neath both her eyes. But the strangest thing about her was the mirror she carried. Was she the one who had been speaking this whole time?

"Excuse... me?"

The girl smiled. Not the cute, adorable smile that would usually belong to most little girls. No, this one was almost insane. Something that Tev had only seen in those stupid horror flicks she and her brothers watched on Friday nights.

'tnaW ot ees ruoy luos?' The girl spoke, but her words were scrambled up. Tev couldn't understand a word of it.

Tev tilted her head a little bit, indicating that she didn't know what the girl was saying, and in response, the girl's smile faded.

'diputS, tnarongi lrig.'

Tev opened her mouth to say something in response, but the light captured from the mirror caught her attention first. Without chosing to, she glanced down at the one who stared back at her.

Tev's shriek of absolute terror astounded those around her. She jumped up in her seat, lifting her head off of her books and stared wide-eyed at the ceiling. Tears found their place on her cheeks and left her eyes, while her breathing began to calm.

"Miss Storme'? Is everything alright?" Her teacher asked her, clearly annoyed and concerned at the same time.

"Mr. Hardin, is everything alright in here?"

Apparently her scream had reached the other classrooms. Tev noticed Edward and her younger brother Eric standing outside the door. Without notice, she jumped up from her seat and ran from the room and into her brother's arms.

"E-Edward...." Tev whispered, tears slipping down her face and drying themselves of Ed's shirt.

Edward wrapped one arm around his sister's shoulders and asked if he could take her to the nurse.

"C'mon, Tev. Let's go."

Tev could only nod, but as she turned her head to see the other students, the white girl sat on the window seal, grinning back at her.

"Did you see her?"

"See who?" Edward asked curiously, looking down at his sister with slight confusion.

"That... that girl. She was in the class room when we left."

"Tev, there were a lot of girls in your class." He smiled.

Was he laughing at her?

Tev looked away, feeling even worse laying down in the nurse's office. She just knew that as soon as she walked out, people would be staring at her as if she were the living dead. She didn't want that. Not on her first day back.

She sighed softly, the visions of the white girl still haunting her mind. She didn't want to think of it anymore. She didn't want to think of herself. The mere thought of it made her sick.

Edward watched as his sister turned away. He rested the palm of his hand on her forehead, making sure she didn't have any kind of fever.

"Tev, should we go home?" He asked softly, taking his hand back.

"I don't know. I don't know," She whispered, starting to cry again. She could almost tell that the girl would not leave her alone. She had the strangest feeling that she was in the room with her, but she dared not move over to see.

"Why DID you freak out?" Ed ask softly.

Tev didn't really want to tell him about her fear. The worst thing that could happen now was if she lost Ed's trust and security. She glanced up at him, then closed her eyes, fearing for the vision on the white mirror girl to appear.

"I fell asleep... and I had a really bad dream. I guess I must have screamed." Nothing bad, she thought. But she knew better than that.

'toidI lrig....'

Tev's eyes shot open. No, not that voice again. She didn't want to hear that voice. Never again.

She turned her head and looked around the room, searching for the source, a human source, for that chilling voice.

'Haha! uoY kniht I lliw og yawa taht ylisea?'

Tev's eyes met those of the little girl, her eyes reflecting Tev's horrid expression as she watched the white girl.

The white girl grinned with a childish smile, cocking her head to the side as she unveiled the mirror. The reflection showed the face of someone Tev had wished she had never seen.

She wrapped her hand around a lamp that had been on the table beside her bed and threw it as hard as she could towards the girl.

"Tev!" Edward shouted, standing from the bed as he watched the lamp shatter on the floor.

Tev glared at the girl as she smiled, and when she saw the broken pieces of the lamp's base, she started sobbing.

Edward stared at his sister, then went to the wall and pressed the button, which called the office within moments.

"Something is wrong with you," replied Caroline, Tev's older sister. The blonde was, in Tev's opinion, the girliest person she had ever known.

"I'm perfectly fine," Tev said softly, watching the ground as the two walked back home.

After Edward had called the office, he called their parents and told them that Tev wasn't feeling well. And since he had a test in his next class, he couldn't take her home. So Caroline was stuck with the job.

"Throwing a lamp at nothing is NOT normal, in case you hadn't noticed. I swear, why couldn't you be a NORMAL girl and like pink and play with dolls? But nooo. You just had to stand out and..."

Tev sighed softly. Her sister was like this. Always nagging about how she wished Tev was a clone like the rest of her sisters. At least Edward would have made her feel better. All she wanted to do now was go home.

The two sisters arrived at the house in minutes, and Caroline opened the house for Tev and waved goodbye. Tev watched as her blonde sister ran back off to school, leaving her alone with the house.

She closed and locked the door, turned on the TV in their living room, then collapsed on the couch.

"Maybe going back to school WAS a bad idea. Now everyone is going to be saying I'm insane or some s**t like that," She muttered, shutting her eyes as she quickly fell asleep.

Tev sat up, startled and afraid of the sudden chill that was sent up her spine. Beside her, where a simple wall mirror once hung proudly from the wall, were hundreds of tiny shards of glass scattered below the now broken mirror. An antique passed down from her great grandmother, now broken and robbed of it's use.

"No... not here, too," The girl whispered, glancing around the living room. It couldn't have followed her here, too, could it? Yeah... it had been there before, when she had left for her first day back.

'denethgirF? m'I dalg.'

Tev grabbed a pillow and threw herself onto the floor, holding the pillow above her head as if to drown out the voice.

"Go away, go away, go away, go away, go away, go away!"

'reveN. ll'I eb ereh reverof dna reve.'

"Go away... go away.... go away.... go awaaaaay!!!!"

'reveroF.'

"GO AWAY! GO AWAY! GO AWAY! GO AWAY!" Tev screamed, pushing herself off the ground as she tipped over the coffe table that had trapped her between the couch and itself. Spotting the fleeting girl in white, she took hold of two of the legs of the table and threw it across the room.

"GET OUT! STAY AWAY! GET OUT! GET OOOOUT!" She shouted, backing away with a look of both horror and disgust. Making the mistake of backing into the wall with shards of broken glass at it's base. Tev glanced down at her feet, which had now begun to bleed from stepping on the jagged edges of the glass.

The white girl peeked out from behind the door that led to Tev's kitchen, a look of pure innocence of her delicate features. The mirror in her hands once again reflected the face of someone who Tev wished to forget. The face of herself when she was a horried monster in everyone's eyes.

"NOOO! GO AWAY! I DON'T WANT IT! I DON'T WANT TO SEE IT!" The brunette continued screaming, sinking to her knees as she clutched the sides of her head in agony. "PLEASE GO AWAY! LEAVE ME ALOOOOONE!"

't'noD uoy ees? ehS si uoy. uoY si ehs. Tehehe.'

At that exact moment in time, Tev took a handfull of broken shards in both of her hands and glared at the little child with such a look of insanity it reflected in the girl's mirror. With drops of blood seeping through her fingers, the teenager threw them all at the girl.

It was then when the girl vanished.

It was then when Edward walked into the house.

"Tevana! What is going on?! What happened?!" Edward shouted, shutting the door behind him as he ran over towards his sister.

Tev dropped to her knees, her eyes shut tightly and her arms crossed while her nails dug into her shoulders. This wasn't happening. This had to be some kind of dream, some sort of nightmare. Things like this didn't happen. Or maybe it was just her.

"E-Edward.... s-she followed me h-here...."

"Tev, your bleeding, we need to get you to the hospital and-"

"She's s-still here, I-I j-just know she is," Tev whispered, tears streaming down her face.

Edward looked at Tev, his sister, and the at their surroundings. It seemed almost as if someone had broken in, and Tev had tried to defend herself. He glanced up at the shattered mirror, then down at his sisters hands, covered in blood and tiny glass shards. Sighing, he wrapped his arms around her.

"It's alright. I'm here. She won't hurt you anymore, I promise."

Tev replied with sob escaping her lips. It wasn't fair of her to put this burden on her brother's shoulders. It wasn't right. But at the moment, she couldn't bear to let him go. She released the grip on her shoulders, her hands growing sore from holding on so tightly, and wrapped them around Edward's middle.

"Shhh, everything's going to be fine, Tev. Your going to be alright," Edward said, listening to her sobs die quietly, and finally relaxed a little as she fell asleep.
