Power RPs are when you move someone else or make them do something they don't want to do. An example:
((With power RP)) Kenji does a flip off of the ceiling and, lashing his foot out, breaks Genno's neck, killing him.
((Without power RP)) Kenji leaps off of the scaffolding and aims a kick at Genno's unprotected face.
You can see the difference! In the first example, I don't give Genno time to move or react, making it not fun for him. In the second, he can dodge if he wants. ((But be careful, read the "Out Ubering" section)) This makes roleplay more enjoyable for everyone.
The only time power rping is acceptabe is when fighting an NPC ((A character you make up)) You can do what you want since it's basically your character. Also, when someone is "Out Ubering" Power RP is sometimes the only way to make them stop.

Literacy is a huge problem with RPing. There are good and bad uses to it. A good use of bad grammar is when you try to make an uncultured character. An example is the mule's character Raijin.
"You kids got nothin' 'ta worry 'bout, we're all friends 'ere, 'eh?"
You can tell from the single quote on the mispelled words that they were intentional, to indicate an accent. However:
"U kids gt nthing 2 worry bout, were all frens here, huh?"
That is an abomination to the English language ^^
Please refrain from using abbreviations and "text talk" when you roleplay. It makes the story easy to read and helps other people to understand you better.

OOC: Out of Character. Usually defined as player to player conversation. This is used to discuss, or clarify about the roleplay between people at the computer screens. This can be put in parenthesis.
IC: In Character. Usually defined as character to character conversation. Anything a character does is IC. This is to be put in quotes.
Kenji-sensei says: A distinction- Character refers to the roleplay character (like your avi), while player refers to the person at the screen (like you ^^.)
IC and OOC are two COMPLETELY different things. Just because a character is a rude, uncultured jackass, doesn't mean the player is. Just because the character doesn't like your character, doesn't mean the player doesn't like you.
The whole point of roleplay is to be someone you may not be. Don't assume about a player from his character. Also, If you know/do something OOC, you don't know it IC! This also technically applies to names. If someone hasn't introduced themselves IC, you're stuck with referring to them as "the man" or "the woman."
That said, as a courtesy, introduce yourself as soon as possible.

To post without doing anything is a waste of time. The post Kenji stares at the tree without knowing where it came from is relatively useless. Even if the action is made-up, it's better than none. Example of that: Kenji sees the tree, wondering where it sprang from. He beckons his fellows closer and places and experimental kick on it.
This is more fun to read, and tells you someting that goes on in the storyline.
Vaethi-sensei says: Don't let one character do all the development. Wait until more people post, and don't fill out more than 2 posts at a time without someone responding in-between.

Interaction with other characters is a very important aspect of roleplay! It helps us get to know you... and even if your character is the "strong/silent" type, you can still include other people in your posts.
Example: Kenji kills everything and runs into the tower, looking for more victims.
Now for one... you can't defeat an entire NPC army.... seriously. The second problem is that nothing happened with your friends! The way to do this is slower and more subtle:
Kenji slays a few of his opponents, and checking to see if his companions are still following him, runs to the base of the tower, cutting a swath of death and clearing a path for them.
That's a good way to roll with rping: you help yourself and your friends without power rping, and your idea was rooted in reality.
Another problem with RPing is pulling the RP to you instead of following the story.
Example: Kenji enters the room and sits under a tree, sobbing
That does nothing to help the RP, all you are doing there is to drag the roleplay to you instead of playing and having fun. This also deals with "Entering and Exiting," so check that out as well.
Vaethi-sensei says: Pulling the RP to yourself is ok for your introduction. However, within a few posts, the whole group should be involved again.

I understand that in a forum RP, the only way to join is, very often, to jump right in. However, this can be seen as rude, especially when your post isn't in context. Instead, post an OOC post about where best to enter. Also, PLEASE review the last, say, page of posts, so that you understand what's going on. An involved character will inform you and then you just need to wait. If you wait, you'll find that most involved will be much more agreeable with you.
Leaving is another story. No OOC post is needed, but please, don't just...well, leave. Build up to it, and give a relevant reason, in the context of the plot. Kenji-sensei says: The best way is to get yourself killed off, but please make it a decent escape, no melodrama/histrionics please... Just die and be done with it ^^
Coming back after leaving should be handled the same as entering. Just because you were a part at one point doesn't mean you have immunity.

Ahh...Detail. A pet peeve of mine, to be honest. There are several different types of detail in RP. For now, I'll discuss profile detail.
When creating a character, the more detail the better. Name, Build, Age, these are simple. Your first opportunity to shine is with Outfit/Appearance. The more you put there, the more we know what your character looks like. Detail doesn't have to equal extravagance either. If your character has only the shirt on his back and the pants he's wearing, that's fine. But tell us this. Appearance should be more than a line too. Does your character have any distinguishing marks? A tattoo? A scar? Is he bald? Ponytail? The more detail in a character's appearance, the easier it is to "see" him when RPing around him.
Personality and History are important as well. Personality tells us what you are like. The less you put there, the harder it is for others to RP with your character. Your character will seem "flat" because, so far as we know, there isn't much to him. These are never fun to be around, to be honest. History tells us why your character is the way he is. This is important, but, in truth, it can be discussed in the RP. The section should in no way be left blank though.
Now...for the really important part. When it comes to weapons, armor, and abilities, you must tell us everything the character starts with. The biggest reason for this will be discussed in OutUbering. Basically, you can't leave yourself a blank check in regards to abilities, and be able to do anything in the roleplay as needed. It doesn't work that way. xd However, don't think that your abilities are locked in stone. You can, through NPCs or other players, learn new abilities In Character.

Ok..."OutUbering." I coined this term in regards to forum RP battles.
OutUbering: Two players posting back and forth, miraculously dodging everything the other throws, and countering with "absolutely ungodly undodgable" attacks.
THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE!
Here, the reason for all the detail becomes visible. By defining your abilities, and knowing your opponents, you cannot, and he cannot, pull an attack out of thin air.
I know you both think your characters are the best, and are unbeatable.
You will eventually come upon a character stronger than yours. Fact of life. Read my lips: There is no shame in losing an RP battle.
RPing is about a storyline, not who is better. Battles are fun, and are good reading, if done right. If not, they become tedious, with everyone waiting for it to end.
A suggestion for player versus player battles. Either a) Decide who wins beforehand (OOC), or b)Let the battle run and ask your companions OOC who is winning.
COMPANIONS: BE FAIR IN JUDGING.
For player versus NPC battles: Be as ungodly uber as you want, within the constraints of your character. wink

This is an easy one! All you have to know is that interrupting a serious rp with something like: I luv anime, duz evrone else??!>1?!
WILL get you banned immediately, no questions asked.
And that wraps up the first day's ((...and maybe last depending on cooperation!)) lessons! Go to the Roleplay School Questions if you are curious about anything!

Ok, keeping up. This seems a simple thing, but we've seen some people not doing it. If you're going to be away from the roleplay for a while, be it because your 'net died, your 'puter died, or just because you want to take a break for a while, please try to keep up. Even if you use a friend's computer to check in every so often and read the new developments. This will prevent the following problem. (See next post)

"Huh?" Posts: I just coined this term yesterday. These are the posts people post after being gone a while that are completely out of context or try to completely redirect the plot.
These posts confuse the people who post regularly as much as they make you look like a fool.
Not to mention any names here but... *grin* Bite the bullet, take the plunge and actually READ the last few posts to get an idea of where your companions are going with their plot. Even better...read from your last post up to the most recent post. *gasp* I know! Actual reading!

Okay people, here's a simple one. This will eliminate half the problems we have here. I don't know how to put it any simpler.
Now then, read my lips: READ THE FORUM! Don't just post. Actually sit down and read what you have. Reading the last few pages makes your posts fit in better, and makes you look like a better roleplayer. Actually reading your post lets you catch mistakes and typos which you can fix. Now you look more intelligent.
In closing, I have this to say, to stave off the angry mob of people who are out for my blood now: If you don't like to read, WHY are you on a forum roleplay?

People...please, please, please read what you write before you post it. Use quotation marks when your character speaks. Punctuate. Use proper grammer. Use the spell check.
Case in point: The ellipsis (...) Ellipses are used to denote a pause or an omission. In the context of an rp, it's most likely a pause. Ellipses are used in dialog and very rarely, to end a sentence, depending on circumstances.
Good: "Well... I suppose...we could go, but..." Bad: Well........I supose...........we could go, but......." He turns to his companion and waits for a response..............
