I'm curious, I have the expansion for this game, however my friend does not. Is it still possible for us to play online with one another with me using my Draenei, or would he need the expansion as well?

Your friend can still run to the new race's starting areas (Azuremyst), but he/she cant actually make a draenei. Nor can they level past 60 or enter Outland. But yeah, you two can still play together.

Your friend cannot take the boat to Draenei land.
If you make a Blood Elf, your friend cannot enter Blood Elf land.
If you both have 60s, you can get higher but your friend will be unable.
Your friend will be unable to enter Outlands, whereas you'd be able to live it up.
I know the first two tidbits because when BC was released I tried to catch the boat and was thrown back to the Darkshore graveyard. I don't think it's changed since.
