I heart my Yamaha Custom Z. The response is really nice and it has a good mellow tone, but I wouldn't call it dark... Mine's an alto, though; I'm not sure how Yamaha tenors are.

So, I'm buying a sax pretty soon getting ready for my college years. I'm looking for one with a mellow, dark tone that plays well under subtone with quick response in the keys. Anyone know of a sax I'm speaking of? Oh, btw, it's a tenor that I'm looking for. So far I've looked at Yanagisawas and Keilwerths, and have tried out a couple Selmers (surprisingly I don't like them), Cannonballs, and Yamahas.

What makes/model saxes do you guys play and how do they sound?
To the edge of infinity...

I did see a professional saxophone that sounded amazing.
I forget the name of the company. Began with an 'S'.

It was red! The same company makes black ones too and they're beautiful and sound amazing!!!11eleven

i despise yamahas immensely, the low C, B, and B-flat don't respond very easily and it takes me about 20 minutes to a half hour of playing to get it warmed up enough to get good tone and response AND IT'S A PROFESSIONAL LEVEL TENOR SAX TOO!
the only other brand i've played is Jupiter, and those play pretty well, much better response than a yamaha

My tenor is a vintage handmade 1927 Selmer that I bought in a pawn shop for under 1,000$. IT IS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I prefer to use either Selmers myself, and try to stay away from the Yamahas. As far as tenor saxes go, you might want to look at a Selmer Reference, or a Selmer Soloist. The Reference will give you a deeper, darker sound, but it's a little harder to play than the Soloist. My tenor is a Cannonball tenor and it has a brushed nickel body with polished sterling silver keys. Th Cannonball will give you yet an even darker sound than the Reference, but it will also burn quite a hole in your pocket. In the end, you should go with a nickel body, whether it be a Cannonball or not, as nickel is the dark sound you want. DO NOT GO WITH A KEILWERTH. They're just not worth the money, compared to other makes and models. Keep in mind that the mouthpiece you use can greatly affect your sound; the only way you'll be able to get a dark sound is with a big mouthpiece. Or a metal mouthpiece; if you use a mouthpiece that restricts your airflow, then there's virtually no way to get the sound you want. Reeds can alter your sound too......I'm not going to get into that.....I'm assuming that you already know about all that. I hope that helped. I get a deep dark sound on my tenor in the low register and a full middle range sound in the middle D and above area. I use a Cannonball tenor with a 6* Otto Link Super Tone Master metal mouthpiece, and size 3 Gonzalez reeds.

I play alto and I had the same dilemma where I didn't like any of the new saxes out there. I ended up buying a vintage 1928 Martin 100 % silver plated in near perfect condition which was not only beautiful but intune with the best sound that I have ever received from a sax. meelow dark however with a slight change can become smooth and silvery. My recommendation is to try some vintage saxes, with the exception of the mark VI most are reasonably priced because most people don't realize how great they are. Mine was 1100 off craigs list. So look around some. xd and the aged brass seems to just resonate more.

Well I play my school's tenor saxophone and it's has "Aristocrat" in engraved on the front of it. I guess it's the brand, and it's really good.

I used to play on the school Aristocrat too! It was a fun horn and i had a lot of great memories with it. Too bad that it went to crap after i graduated...

You know i actually love Keilwerths, Selmers are just as overpriced as Keilwerths are and i seem to enjoy playing on the Keilwerths much more than Selmer.

It's all about your personal preference too.
