Rule number one.. No begging.. SO WHY DOES EVERYONE BEG FOR DONATIONS?!
stressed I think it should be made clear that people on a quest should WORK on the quest, not go around begging all the time.
People who work on their quests by vending (buying low, selling high, and yes you can do it with only a couple thousand gold to start!), by doing puzzles, by playing those free tokens, by any simple things are at least a start. Bumping, posting in chatterbox, gathering stuff in towns and selling it are all ways to help yourself gain gold.
Your first quest should be a reasonable one. If your total worth is 5,000 gold, don't start a quest for a halo! It will just be a joke to donators. Start your quests with the lowest price item you want for your avi. Get that, build up your gold some more, start a new quest and go for the next higher priced one. I think it's best to quest for one item at a time. You can list all the items you want for your look, but only list one as the item you are currently questing for.
If you show that you are doing something to gain gold toward your goals, you will be more respected by those who donate. After all, they didn't get rich by begging. Nobody does.
So how do you show that? Instead of begging, make a quest thread. On that thead, keep it up to date with items you are selling in the MP or just from your quest thread, or in the Exchange, and the price. Then when you ask for help, ask people to check your quest (put the URL in your sig) and buy something, or donate. That way, you do ask for donations, but you also ask for more practical help by selling items you have bought (or made, as in town items like cat band hats).
My 2 cents.
