I am currently immersed in a Terry Pratchett book entitled Maskerade, a book in his beloved Discworld series. This book unashamedly parodies the Phantom of the Opera, and for all of you Phantom Phans wanting a bit of comedy, this book may be just right for you. The plot follows the events in the life of Agnes Nitt, a girl from Lancre with a vocal range that spans from lows that will make your bowels uneasy to highs that will give you a headache, great talent in voice projection (more along the lines of how a ventriloquist applies the term than a singer applies it), and a build about four feet wide. Agnes, wanting to get away from the boring life up in the mountains, ventures to Ankh-Morpork to sing at the Opera house. She quickly meets a girl there named Christine, whose figure is stunning but who couldn't sing well to save her own grandmother, and finds herself on many occasions confronted by a strange man wearing a mask. This book parodies on all aspects of the Phantom of the Opera, and I trust that any Phans out there who can put up with Pratchett's style (which is a bit like what you would get if Douglas Adams had written fantasy instead of science fiction) will love it.
Now, if anyone has any comments or has come across other works of literature that parody, reference, or pay homage to the Phantom of the Opera, please don't be shy to tell the guild about it, because we can always do with a good book. wink

I read that, it was very funny. "In every fat girl there is a skinny girl yearning to be free... or dying for chocolate..."
How many different POTO versions are there? I know of, of course, Gaston Leroux and Susan Kay, but are there others?

I loved Maskerade by Terry Pratchett. His take on opera was just too funny to not laugh at, even in class when it's reeeeeally quiet. I earned many a hard stares from reading this book and thus enjoyed all the more. =D

My mum's going to half-price books, and I gave her the title and author, and showed her the cover, and she's going to buy it today. This sounds so great! I loved the managers' little thingy.

Duelriel How many different POTO versions are there? I know of, of course, Gaston Leroux and Susan Kay, but are there others? There are countless versions. Just go onto amazon and surf about the books where you just type in "Phantom". Then pick one of the books, scroll down to the options "People also looked at this" and "This stuff has the same general idea in it". You'll be surprised. Unfortunately, not very many of them appear to be any good.
