There was supposed to be commentary on three news articles along with this pole, but I'm too sleepy to dig them out right now. Maybe tomorrow I'll edit.
Edit: It seems I missed putting in Stem Cell Research, Abortion and terminal illnesses (of self, family or friends).

Okay, so to rerun over those three articles mentioned. The first one was two paragraphs, and goes thus:Quote: Britain, USA fare worst in child welfare studyBritain ranked at the bottom of a survey of child welfare in 21 industrialized countries, followed closely by the USA, a United Nations Children's Fund report said Wednesday. UNICEF studied six indicators to gauge the quality of life for children in 21 rich nations. Topping the list were European countries with strong welfare systems: the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark and Finland. The USA ranked last in health and safety, measured by infant mortality, low birth weight, immunization and deaths from accidents and injuries. The highest U.S. rank was education at No. 12. This one caught my attention first because of the title. For one thing, to read the title, it doesn't read clearly... But since Britain was mentioned and it was a two paragraph clip, I figured I'd read it. After re-reading it twice, I finally absorbed the information and you know what? I couldn't help but wonder where Canada faired in these studies. ¬_¬

The second one that caught my attention was called Mental health groups slam Volkswagen ad and can be found here. (Please do go read it, it's rather short.)
This one caught my attention because it's one of two VW comercials I've actually seen (since I don't watch much TV) and managed to remember. (The second one is the un-pimp your ride one. "Representin' Deutchland!")
So if I could beg of your time, I'd appriciate some other peeps' thoughts on this. (I've already brought it up at work. Got some interesting thoughts.)

Agh! I've brought up at least one thing out of every category there. >>;
In regard to the first article, I can't say I'm suprised at the rankings, considering the current, military-oriented administrations of both America and Britain. Welfare, Health and Safety have not been high on the list for quite some time.
The second article irks me not because of the nature of the advertisement, but by the fact that groups are so upset by an ad that contains, yet does not advocate, something controversial, when I have seen ads of the same nature (even containing the same subject matter!) that have not been pressured as this one has.

<3 Yay! Finally some response on the articles!
The first one got on my nerves because only a few days before, the radio was going on about another mother-leaves-baby-in-a-dumpster killing during their morning news bit.
The second one also got on my nerves because I get very angry with suicidals very quickly. And okay, yeah, that's probably all insensitive and horrible of me. But the people I've known who went suicidal were known to me two ways. Either they were people I barely knew who barely spoke to anyone and seemed very down-to-earth, la-dee-da OR they were/are people who were/are my good friends in which case I get mad at them that they think their problems are so overwhelming that their inability to deal with them outways our personal friendship. To me, that's like saying, "Yeah, you're my friend and I luv ya, but I don't wanna deal with all this hell anymore, sorry." What about me?! What about our other friends?! It's so disrespectful that they'd give up and leave us here in what they think is a better situation than what they had to endure. And usually it IS that they think they had to endure more than anyone else. Selfish prats... I luv them a lot, but I don't love them to death.
SO, if the peeps that're reacting poorly against the commercial are cry-baby, don't-wanna-deal-with-it-anymore-ers like my past (so-called) friends, then I say BS on their being offended. Because if they wanna choose not to deal with life, that's a choice. An easy way out. And it becomes no different than choosing something else life-changing, like stopping smoking, or starting doing drugs, or going to a doctor about that infection that's been festering in your wound for the past week. Not all choices are good ones, and the ones that aren't, need to be pointed out. Maybe saying a car is a good reason to live is a bit satyrical, but is it that much different from saying a brain that's been drugged is like an egg in a frying pan? *arcs a brow* If the suicidals are ticked that they're being poked-fun-at, then why are we allowed to pick on peeps what use drugs on anti-drug ads?
In short, not only does it piss me off, but it seems unfounded.
As for the conversation topic,Three Things You Never Bring Up In Casual Conversation Religion, Politics and Taxes "Hookups", Drugs and Rock & Roll News, Coworkers and Payrates College Majors, Hobbies and Talent Secret Prizes, Sealed Envelopes and Wrapped Gifts Dislikes, Hates and Abhorrations The difference between Goth, Emo and Alternative Hollywood, HBO and OnDemand Orientation, Tolleration and thoughts on War Levels of Maturity, Obsessions and Stephen Hawking Stem Cell Research, Abortion and Terminal Illnesses I'm all for discussing Religion and Politics in company. Y'just have to make sure you know what you're talking about. And know when to just let it go because the arguement won't be settled even if you're right. Taxes, I don't know enough about.
"Hookups," were going to be the third articles mentioned and I've got mixed feelings on discussing them. Drugs and Rock'n'Roll, I'm okay to talk about.
News and Co-workers, I'm okay to talk about, though I often won't talk bad about someone unless they've picked on me unreasonably. (Call my singing off-key, would she?!) Payrates? Er... only in hush-hush conversations. Usually against the rules, methinks.
College majors, hobbies and talent? 9_9; I'm all for sharing talents, but discussing the three of them in the same conversation usually leads to feelings of iniquity and hurt-feelings. The photographer who's had a camera in her hands 9/10ths of her life versing the college grad who's first digital camera was a birthday present last year from her rich parents is a prime example. It became a can-you-top-this between senior old-schooler and newbie-"professional." *shakes head* Making others feel inadequite is never fun nor nice, yet for some reason I always come across peeps who seem to revel in their zealousness. (*cough*obsessivefangirls*cough*)
Secret envelopes, wrapped gifts and secret prizes was a spoof on Gaia's need to disclaimer people trading crappy items underguise of giftwrapping. If yer gonna fall for something like that, come on!
Dislikes, hates and abhorations? Sometimes it's good to point out that you stand for not liking something. Other times... It's making yourself public enemy number one for no good reason. For instance, when it comes to why I absolutely can't stand WB's primetime series... it's just easier to not bring it up.
Kinda the same for Hollywood, HBO and OnDemand. Though, that's starting to branch. It's pointless to debate celebrity or movie quality when someone dislikes it or likes it simply on principle. (There's no arguing with a Justin Timberlake fan. To them, he can do no wrong.)
The difference between Goth, Emo and Alternative tends to come up only as a conversation topic with someone who's mixed them with rock, metal, punk and the like. Kids these days are posers who've completely lost track of what their genres represent/embody. YES, somethings can be classified under multiple headings, but no, other things certainly cannot.
Orrientation, Tolleration and Thoughts on War kinda had to do with the three articles brought up. Orrientation discussions usually lead to morality discussions and while it's good to have the buggers, it's also a b!+ch to attempt to discuss without throwing around loads of opinion. Tolleration, same thing. Thoughts on war, same thing. Lots of personal feelings get dragged into these conversations and then feelings get hurt and enemies get made. =
Levels of maturity, obsessions and Stephen Hawking (RENOWNED quantum-physics professor and theorist) all seem to lead to very humorous conversations. People end up debating things they really know nothing about.
Stem Cell Research, Abortion and Terminal Illness, hm... Can of worms, there. I'm FOR Stem Cell Research, though I'm AGAINST Abortion and I think that stem cell research should be able to be carried out without harming fetuses. So I'm all for them figuring out a way not to kill itty-bitty-babies-in-cell-division to use them. Terminal Illness is iffy. If someone wants to keep it private, *shrugs* that's their business. But I think I'd rather be able to sympathize with a person who's got a problem than let them suffer alone. Maybe that's presumptuous of me, but eh, it's me, and I'm a nosey stick-my-neck-in-everyone-else's-business kinda girl. I hate to see peeps alone. So let's NOT kill the babies, DO borrow some of their cells for research so that we CAN fix terminal illnesses! 3nodding *deep exhale* A week late, but I'm glad to finally get that out. Did I ramble on long enough? (Sorry!)
