Oh, and while we're at it, France went into the Ivory Coast over the weekend and started throwing down WITHOUT CONSULTING THE UNITED NATIONS.

Damn you, for making me defend the French.

They might not be a UN force, but they do have their authorization.

Maybe an idealist such as myself will never get on terms with US citizens when it comes to living on the same world. You are way too self conscious for that.

Quote:

It just seems that I believe that it should be dissolved, and you believe it should be strengthened.

But let me posit this much: what developed country in their right mind would offer any military power to a third-party organization that guarantees nothing in way of personal interest?

Exactly, different views about cohabitating on a piece of rock somewhere in space.
Let's face a simple fact. Even if all the reasons to invade some country were as honorable as you and DJ think they are, even then there is no way that the USA can pull it off by themselves. A coalition between major players is needed. A coalition such as the current one is a joke since the US and the UK do all the dirty work.
Pacificating on a global scale would be a serious investment, but also a token for the future ( not a major topic in the USA, I know. It seems that " the end is nigh"-school of thought has a lot of followers... Is it really so?). A single country would go bankrupt on it, and I'm not even talking about the freaking bodycount... If the big players and their allies would do a serious and very expensive effort it could be done, but the status quo is maintained and no real problems are adressed or resolved because it's just cosy and safe this way. Poltics as we know it, and economy as we know it... Pacificating the world be a whole new ballgame.

This post is far from finished, but I need to get to work now ( pulling the night shift). I'll continue it later.
As far as I'm concerned, guys,(although it is clear that we are ideological opposites), I'm really enjoying this discussion.

Ho ho ho, but Operation Unicorn was a peacekeeping mission authorized by Security Council Resolution 1528 (Feb 2004.) The French soldiers were never authorized to, for example, shoot people, which is what they are doing.

When the United States is on a peacekeeping mission, we're never authorized to shoot people. Our ******** peacekeepers die because they're not authorized to shoot back.

The French, however? Its totally OK for them to shoot and kill people, and even raid rebel camps without U.N. approval, but if the U.S. does it, we are automatically evil.

The UN is a group of cuntrags who sit around and scratch their nonexistent balls. My grandfather used to work in the UN, and would watch those ******** try to get something done. A particularly powerful country makes a proposition. The other countries agree/disagree. Then, for the next few month, they belabour the points to the nth degree. Meanwhile, any THOUGHT of expediency with dealing with the issue at hand is long past gone, and the problem either quietly kills off the populace, or gets solved by Americaland. And the entire time? UN licks America's balls, because they know full well that without us there, the UN would mean absolutely nothing.

Truer words have never been spoken. If they spend more time resolving, and less time arguing about resolving, America could get a little more laid back. Not now that we've got our fingers on "the button." No wonder we're always so on the edge. We can't come to any timely, rationalized conclusions in our "League of Superfriends" (UN). SO, of course, we've got enough artillery to rip half of the world off of our map if we see fit, simply because we can't stay out of everything...

Have you got any idea how much citisism the French take right now for doing so?
I guess it's just not published in the US then.
You know, in a funny way the French and Americans are soooo alike...

There is really no winning, is there? On the one hand, when the USA steps in to take care of business, it's

Sigh... Time will tell.
Last thought on the matter:
- When the USA do intervene it is in the wrong place on the wrong time for the wrong reasons. I know that as a European I stand alone defending that statement, but hey, that's my honest opinion.

The USA have this tremendous potential to actually leave a better world behind, yet instead focalises on something so trivial as capitalism. I know that the USA will remain the epitome of capitalism as they have always been, and that any leftish thought is regarded with sceptisism at best ... that is the nature of the animal.
But why would it be so wrong to strive for a better world for everyone?
That's why I want a stronger and purified UN, not as a world government using black helicopters and s**t as one often reads on "conspiracy "sites, but as a world regulator, in the most democratic way possible.
Right now, the UN are as useless as the old League of Nations. They are corrupt and underfunded for the job.

But that leftish thought, is probably wasted here...

Even pondering to think about considering to review upon politics would've been a bad thing to start out with.
Wow, what the hell did I just say?! gonk
