Oh, I dunno. It has a wee tiny bit to do with "low-budgets origins", but not how that guy was thinking. Doctor Who likes its kitsch, thank you very much, so even if the budget goes up or costs go way down, there's going to be quarries and dorky-looking baddies and only four Daleks per scene, just for old times' sake. You make a strong point, and have therefore calmed me down. I got round to listening to
Cuddlesome yesterday, and my imagination could have visualised the eponymous beasties with total realism...but instead it insisted on making me picture them as they would have looked if realised by a strapped-for-cash 1980s special effects department.

And I thought another defining feature of Faction Paradox was that they don't cast shadows? Yeah, really low budget, that. Of course, I could be mixed up...You're on the right lines...they
do have shadows, but the shadows aren't always thier own. Thier shadows are usually much more heavily armed for one thing.
The Doctor though lost his own shadow for a few books starting in
Unnatural History, but that was because the Faction were grooming him to take on one of thiers.
One of the weirdest things about all this happened in the audios when the Faction was briefly reinstated as a House of Gallifrey, only for some of its members to find out that under Time Lord law they were responsible not just for thier own actions but for the actions of those that thier shadows had previously belonged to.
