Most of you probably know about Lieutennant Watada from Fort Lewis, a soldier who joined after the invasion of Iraq and declined to serve duty there because he doesn't support the war. Now he is facing court-marshal with dishonorable discharge and up to 4 years in federal prison. I am interested in what people think about what is going on. I for one am getting pissed off with protests happening on my bridge... when we dedicated a bridge to the people who have been having 'support our troops' signs on it and waving flags (*cough* Burkley Dr. *cough*) and feel that ever since then they now have been using my town's bridge... which is ruining the traffic grid big-time. But enough about that... lets discuss! pirate

If he doesn't support the war, why did he sign up after it'd already begun?

I question that myself... He knew about the war and everything and is complaining about it being unjust and not supporting it. Why did he join the military in the first place cuz he should've known they would've sent him there eventually.

Yes he did sign up after the war had started. But he was there for a while and it was after he came back the first time that he thought it was an illegal war. So it's not that he thinks all wars are wrong just this one! We were decusing this in my english class. (my spelling sucks)

I don't think he should get any special treatment. There are plenty of people in the military who don't believe in the war, they don't like it, but they serve their time. Why should Watada get off, just because he's a martyr or something. Jesus, people praising him like some kind of hero. He's just a coward. neutral

i say the man is trying to destroy the whole purpose of war and military procedure. war is horrible any way you look at it, but at the same time if people disregard protocol and regulation, chaos takes over and nothing productive is ever achieved.

He signed up fpr the military. He signed contracts. Legally the government owns him. He should have known that when he signed up. The war may be wrong but he is a solgier. He is supposwd to support his country and fellow troops. He takes the money, the education, and everything else the army gives him but he refuses to give his service to them? It is selfish. He is just afraid. I don't blame him for it. I would be afriad too.

If he doesn't support the war/believe in the war/whatever, it doesn't matter once you've decided to be a soldier. Now, it's his duty to go. Whining makes him a coward, and because he's messing with public opinion, a traitor.
I think people would be more willing to listen to his opinions if he distinguished himself in his duties, experiencing Iraq for himself. As it is, he only knows what the news media tells him.
