Well, like Lunaries said, it is important for the person you're sparring with. Otherwise I woul've broken my arm several times already if someone performed a technique on me surprised

Yeah, that's a common injury. We've had so far, three people with injuried elbows because of maybe ukeming too late or tensing up at the last moment.

xd Ukeming?
It's all about tensing up right before your center will no longer be cushioned by your body.

If you tense up too much thats when you get hurt. A good breakfall is when you have practised it for so long that it becomes muscle memory, this means that you do not have to do anything, your body does it naturally. I got so that I Could Not do a cartwheel because I my legs kept going to a frontroll or breakfall position.

Yeah actually, tensing up before you breakfall is not a good idea, at any point of the technique. Actually for our class, it is visible when people begin being good at their ukemi's. Not the first 10 but usually around 20. That's because by then, your body becomes so tired that it doesn't have the strength to tense up anymore and you just fall like a sack of rice. That's the best ukemi.

I can't speak for all arts, but I've noticed how no one has discussed how important breakfalls are as a courtesy to the person you are practicing with. If you do not "go with the technique" as the term is often used in Aikido, the other person cannot learn to feel what the technique is supposed to feel like. This is where breakfalls come in. If you can do a good breakfall, your partner can go more full out on you and be able to practice better, knowing that you can take the technique.

Also something interesting my sensei once said is that the better ukei you are, the better you will be at the technique. If you learn to relax and take the technique, it gives you an opportunity to truly feel out what the technique feels like and in return, you will learn faster. So it goes both ways.

I agree completely with your first paragraph. It is a courtisy to the other person.
As for the second, I was a Very good uke. And I was good with the shinai. I knew what a good throw felt like and I knew what it looked like but I had a very hard time Applying the throw.
It may have been because I was 5'4" 120lb person trying to copy the movements of a 6' 350lb person. But I had a lot of trouble doing throws.
...ps I enjoyed bloodying a few noses.

When you talk about throws, are you speaking of throws where the person is coming across with a strike?

In that case, there are also other problems associated with throws, and this is from my own experience as well. The problem with throws, especially from a hip, and especially against a larger guy, is that you need alot of momentum to do the throw properly. But usually in practice, people don't strike with full momentum as part of courtesy and fear of hurting you. Thus, you never get to practice the technique effectively.

I know this because I have a major problem with throws. Once though, my sempai and I got a bit carried away and he came at me like he was going to kill me. I did the six most perfect throws in my life, surprising everyone in class. I think actually everyone in class stopped to watch me, but I'm not sure as I was entirely focused at that point.

Though a lot of kids know idea of how to breakfall earlier, it's a requirement to get to your third kyu along with rolls. I was petrified of breakfalls before. I'm fairly tall, so I felt that the floor was very far away and I'd hurt myself from fall from such a height (doesn't help that I'm afraid of heights). I know it's stupid, but that's how I felt at the time.
