Was working on this yesterday. Took about 6 hours total:

His story:

Savnok, the instigator. Servant of Hextor and Heironeous, before the brothers became Gods. He stole their mother's armor and donned it. Wearing divine armor, he was invincible on the material plane, where he waged war. Hextor stole his mother's bow, and shot Savnok dozens of time, letting him bleed to death. (c) Wizards of the Coast

Looking back on it, yeah, the colors are too similar, shouldn't be very hard to go mess with those layers in photoshop, so I'll definitely play around with that =D

As for the swirly clouds, no real reason, was trying to get dramatic looking BG.

for the darker shades, do you mean darker drop shadows compared to form shadows, or different parts of the armor having different values? I guess I can try both anyways.
