So fore English I'm going to be reading The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allen Poe, and I guess it's a horror story. Before I read it, there are some questions it asks me, and one of them is "Think of horror stories that you have read in the past or seen at the movies or on television. Which did you find the most terrifying? What was so scary about them? Why do you think people enjoy horror tales?"

Now. For most people that is a good, answerable question.
For me? Not so much.
I HATE horror movies. Or hated? I want to see The Hitcher, but I'm not sure if that counts. And I HAVEN'T. I'm a HUGE wus, and I don't like being scared. OR at least, not that kind of scared. I don't think it's fun. I get really scared really easily, and I WILL have nightmares. I haven't even SEEN The Hitcher yet and I'm having nightmares about it. So I don't watch horror. The closest thing to horror I've seen are about 5 minutes of goosebumps shows before I realized they were goosebumps, and a tiny bit of a couple Are you afraid of the dark. And I don't remember anything but crying because I was scare....and I was seven. So I have no clue how to answer that, because I don't remember what was going through my head when I was seven. And I haven't felt like facing a horror movie since, so I have no clue what scares me about them. >_> Anyone want to lend a hand?

Edit: When movies get suspenseful, or something scary could happen, I'm like a fish out of water. Seriously, I ask people who've seen the movie what happens next SOO many times because I don't like being shocked.
And I have no clue why people like horror tales. Really. It escapes me.

Scary movies dont scare me too much anymore.

it's more in other movies that I ask what happens next. I like to be surprised. somewhat. I like to jump out of my seat, too. gore wont bother me and i don't get nightmares. last nightmare i had about a scary movie was when i was younger and that whole, "YOUR NOT MY DAUGHTER" movie type thing with the possession or ghosts or something was out.

saw the preview for it and i had a bad dream. XDD

Same here. And I have two friends who constantly talk on and on about horror movies and I just have to sit and cringe, and when they get to talking about a gruesome part I have to plug my ears T.T

I'm trying to remember a few of the Are You Afraid of the Dark episodes I was scared of.
I remember little bits and pieces, like these two guys in one, and something with this bridge over a stream or river or something. Like...something like a wallet was lost...or something like that. D:
And there was this other one with some girl in this really oldish victorian like house, and this other girl in this frill dress....and people being dead...I don't remember details, I just remember being scared shitless and crying a lot.

In my case, I LIKE horror, I just don't like watching it.

I love reading horror novels because there's usually a great story behind all the spirits and ghosts and whatnot. I like reading the X-File novels. I'm not bothered by the horror in them, because I don't envision the murders carried out. I just read, get a slight chill, and go on. Oh, and the Goosebumps series don't count. Christopher Pike novels, however, do.

I often go to Wikipedia to check out the plots of horror movies such as Friday the 13th, Halloween, Scream and so on. I love the twist endings (although that goes for all movies, and not just horror) that make me nod my head and think "Hey, that's awesome."

The same goes for horror games. I love reading the plots of games like Resident Evil, but I've never played it in my life. Although I have watched a friend play it once at my home. And believe me, it's not pleasant watching the main character have his head chainsawed off over 20 times (my friend is not a genius gamer).

I guess what I hate is the gore. I'm not really good around blood on horror movies (cartoon violence is fine). Mainly because once I watch a man get stabbed, I think, "Oh God that must hurt." It's especially worse with torture and mutilation scenes (that movie that came before the Devil's Rejects scarred me) where I get to thinking that the main characters would be better off dying. It's strange, cause I can stand to watch people die in Angel and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, although that might be because of the humor in it and the fact that there's not Kill Bill style gushing blood fountain. It doesn't hurt me to listen about it - it's the sight of it. The suspense, I like.

Of course, there's the act of distinguishing between a thriller and horror. I'd count movies like Identity (an awesome movie with an awesome twist) and Cry Wolf as thrillers, despite their horror-like tendencies. Others, like Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th that deal directly with the supernatural, are definitely horror.

There are some exceptions, though. Some movies (from what I've read in Wikipedia) have bloody lame plots. If there's a murder, it's justified for me, as long as there's a good reason behind it. Not motif-wise, but ability wise. Villains who despite being human manage to use supernatural strength irk me. Blah to them, I say, blah to them.

I'm funny with gore, too. I don't like cartoon gore, and I don't like movie goore, but in RL I can stand to look at or handle any injury or whatever that comes along.

OHOH I DONT LIKE THE TWILIGHT ZONE EITHER.

Ooh, Twilight Zone. Wish someone would update the plot summaries for the episodes there. I've only read about half of those. XP

What really scares me in horror movies are the silence. I don't like gore, but that's not the firghtening part. Movies that really creep me out are the ones made in Japan. With the woman in a white dress with long black hair. Like in Ju-on. Ooh.
