So... I'm very, very bad at interpreting poetry. I'm the first to admit that. So, of course, I wouldn't expect miracles out of other people. But this was just... so terrible I found it horribly amusing, and had to post it here just to make sure it's as... sadly idiotic as I thought it to be.
So, I was in my American Lit. II class, and we were going over a poem called "Grass" by Carl Sandburg. Here's the poem, for reference:
Pile the bodies high at Austerlitz and Waterloo. Shovel them under and let me work-- I am the grass; I cover all.
And pile them high at Gettysburg And pile them high at Ypres and Verdun. Shovel them under and let me work. Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor: What place is this? Where are we now?
I am the grass. Let me work.
Okay. For those of you who might not know, those proper names are the names of the sites of different battles in various wars. There was a footnote explaining that, just in case the reader didn't know. So, especially with that footnote, it would seem that the poem is at least VAGUELY about war, right? I mean, wouldn't that be kind of obvious?
Well, when our professor asked what we thought the poem was talking about, one girl raised her hand and said, "I think it's about ******** just wasn't sure whether to laugh or cry. And she didn't even mean snakes in a metaphorical way or anything. She thought it was a poem describing snakes, and that the different names were the names of types of snakes.

>.< I'm an Australian with no idea about the history of anything in any other country after the medieval ages, and even I could figure that out. That girl should be shot and put out of her misery.

stare Such a smart girl, don't you agree?
I mean really, discovering that the true meaning of the poem was to describe snakes when it mentioned nothing about snakes at all...
Bravo, smartie, bravo.

It makes me sad how people these days are so stupid.
It makes me sadder to see that they're getting stupider.
