Oh this is a glorious day and age, where you can be an undergraduate at Yale and learn how to perform abortions!

That's right everyone! No medical major needed. Just show up! I wish I was there so I could learn it myself.

They took it off the site, but oh, the internet is a glorious place indeed. As is freerepublic.

On Thursday, the Yale Medical Students for Choice will host workshop on manual vacuum aspiration for medical students, using a papaya as a uterine model. Manual vacuum aspiration is a surgical abortion method that uses a syringe to remove the fetus from a woman’s uterus. Merritt Evans MED ’09 said she thought it was important to have the workshop because the procedure can be used for a variety of different purposes — including miscarriage management and the treatment of a failed medical abortion or ectopic pregnancy — and is inconsistently taught in medical school.

While the workshop is targeted towards medical students, undergraduates are also invited to attend.

“The reason I wanted to include other people is that it is such a simple procedure, but the media attention around it … makes this an emotionally traumatic and a complicated thing,” Evans said. “It’s just to be like, ‘Here is what actually happens, here is what the medical procedure is like, this is what an aborted yolk sac looks like.’ It looks like a piece of cotton.”

Is anyone else reminded of Molly Saves The Day? Right after the South Dakota ban, she set up instructions for women in South Dakota to make their own clinic. Her blog is unfortunately now Sheilas Wheels, but trust me, you would have enjoyed Molly. The instructions have been saved by Sarah though, God bless her heart, killing women with these dangerous illegal clinics must be wonderfully heartwarming for people.

I mean, illegal abortions, which Jane clinic abortions certainly would be, are unsafe and kill thousands upon thousands of women, right? Surely, anyone who cares about women wouldn't want others to start these butchering centers where women get hacked up...oh wait, you mean those numbers were false and these places were relatively safe? Oh, well then.

I'm sick of it. I've said it before and I'll say it again. If they want untrained people performing abortions on women to the point where they will TRAIN these people, they have no right to claim, "But women will die in illegal abortions!" Yeah, because YOU were the one that encouraged their killers to perform them without any real....

GAH. I hate Yale now.

uestion: Molly, on her blog Molly Saves the Day, has posted at home abortion instructions. If there came a time that abortions were no longer legal, could someone without any medical training perform an abortion following Molly’s directions? What would be your concerns about someone having an at home abortion without trained medical assistance?

Dr. Toub: The blog post on abortion technique was well meaning, to be sure. But as I responded on that blog, I have some concerns. In theory, yes---it is possible for a nonclinical person to perform an abortion. But I would say that it is also possible for anyone to perform an appendectomy; indeed, it’s been done. Just because something can be done doesn’t mean that it should be done. Abortion, particularly early suction curettage, gives the impression of not being a very difficult procedure. It’s fast, very safe and highly effective. However, impressions can be misleading. Ninety-nine times out of one hundred, everything goes very smoothly. But it’s that one time that can be associated with complications, some of which are very serious, even deadly. Surgical abortion in and of itself is not that difficult to do, although there’s a bit of an art to it and is more challenging in the second trimester, particularly since it is essentially a “blind” procedure when ultrasound is not used, which is how it’s generally done. The real skill comes in with regard to preventing, recognizing and managing those infrequent complications. I used to tell residents that anyone can teach a monkey how to operate; the real skill in surgery involves clinical judgment. The same is true of surgical abortion---it is feasible for nonclinicians to do it, but without question the risks are greater in terms of infection, incomplete abortion and uterine perforation, and even more importantly, it’s not clear to me how effectively those complications would be recognized and managed.

You can teach a monkey to do surgery. This has been proven by abortionists such as Dr. Henry Morgantaler and Dr. George Tiller. At least they have facilities to care for women when they mess up, even if they don't use them because it might scare away busines...erm...women seeking help ninja

I always found it funny that she uses the word "baby" at one point to describe the fetus.

I can only imagine the flood of hate mail: "ZOMG ITS NOT A BABY!!!! ITS A FETUS!!!! FETUSFETUSFETUSFETUSFETUS!!!! NOT A BABY! IN ANY WAY, SHAPE OR FORM! CLUMP OF UNFEELING EVIL PARASITIC CELLS!!! FEEEEEETUUUUUSSSSSSS!!!1!1!!!!!1!" scream scream scream

Nate Sheets pointed out in one of his blog posts that nobody uses wire coathangers anymore. Ruh roh, guess they'll have to use something else. Because god forbid they just have the baby fetus-that-magically-transforms-into-a-baby. That would be HELLISH TORTURE. surprised
