How do I say this? A couple of months ago I read about a technic (sp?) were you could connect with another person, like a mental connection? I remember little bits and pieces about it. Has anyone heard of something like this? The way the author described it was not a harmful thing. You could feel what that person was feeling only to a certain degree. sweatdrop

I've never really done any study on this particular topic, but I do have some possible real-life experience. Depends on exactly what kind of mental connection you mean. I have this friend that I'm extremely close with, 2/3 of them, in fact, so close that we call each other Sister. (2/3 because one of them has been changing... I'm not sure how close we are any more.) Anyways, my 'Neesan' and I have been mentally pretty close since we started becoming better and better friends. And when we went to school together, we used to swear we could pick up on each other's feelings. One time, she came out of her class room after my math class and met me in the hallway and complain about how my anger was distracting her from her class. Truely, I had been really pissed that period, 'cause I hated my teacher back then and he was being particularly... bitchy, I guess, that day. And I hadn't told her that before she commented. Then the summer before I moved (I think it was...), I went on a trip down the state, and we lives more north-ish. One day, around noon I think it was, I started getting really worried something bad was going on, but I didn't know why. I just felt really sad, but happy at the same time, and I knew the sadness wasn't mine. When I finally got home from the trip (damned cell phone didn't work were we were), I found out that my Neesan had called me on that day around noon because she had been thinking of killing herself.
So, I really do believe we had and still have some sort of mental connection. Though it could also be all coincidence, I guess. Anyways, this might not even be on topic really... ^^;; What I got from your post was that this was what you were kinda talking about.

Pretty much every single human being has the ability to 'mentally connect' with another human being in the manner you describe: empathy. While it is a learned skill, pretty much everyone learns it as you need to in order to survive and interact sucessfully with other people. Aside from the very young (who haven't learned yet) everyone does this. We pick up on more subtle social cues from things like voice inflection and tone of voice, plus body language which includes things like amount of eye contact, general pose, or the more obvious gestures. It happens on such a subconscious level that to some this ability feels a bit... paranormal or whatnot. Once you become aware of how finely trained our minds really are to subtle cues on levels that never pass our conscious awareness, the whole thing looses some of that mystery.
That doesn't make the ability any less special; some people are better at picking up those subtle signals than others. While it is a learned skill, it is somewhat difficult to teach people. You can really only learn it from trial and error. confused

My sister dose that with people she is really close to. Curently she seems to have a conection with me and her boyfriend. She always seems to know what I'm feeling even when she is not with me, and if its really bad she will call me to see whats wrong.

You could feel what that person was feeling only to a certain degree. sweatdrop I think this is a possibilty. My friend and I try to hone this skill. We have our good days and our bad. But I definately think this is possible.
