I didn't know squat about Rent when it came out. Litterally i needed a christmas present for my friend, saw commercials for a new musical (in movie form of course) and went she likes musicals i'll take her to that. Now we're obsessed.

But I get what you mean about that. I'm sure there are people out there where the main attraction for them is the story behind RENT. It's sad that people will judge a musical on that and not the musicals content itself but it does happen. However Rent is such a wonderful musical that i'm sure people would love it even if they didn't know the story. I know I did.

I heard the music, got hooked, and went looking for the story. I was about 5 when the musical first started. I wasn't following the story. Jonathan's art got me hooked, not his death. But I do love the story behind RENT even though I would kill to have another play of Jonathan's to obsess over. The story is just too fitting.

I've been listening to the music since I was in 3rd grade (My Mom played me the music and explained the meaning of it as the CD progressed), and I'd say that if you like the music, you can like the show without having to know about Jonathan Larson's passing. I wasnt told about it in detail until I saw the show when I was 13.
