In my opinion the books are truly great as far as fantasy goes, but I would never even think of calling them the best books of all time. They are far too black and white in terms of ethics and look at the far too obvious connection between aesthetics and ethics - anything evil has to be ugly, unkept, dirty, slimy, smelly or all those put together. Apart from Saruman, perhaps.

Now this is a category I like. Strangely enough, I never got around to reading the books until I saw the first movie all the way through at a friend's house. She let me borrow the second book from her brother and I wasn't able to put that book down for at least a week or so. My favorite of all the LotR trilogy would have to be Fellowship. The Hobbit is also a favortite of mine.

Tolkien is the one who's gotten me hooked on fantasy forever!

I read The Fellowship of the Ring in seventh grade for a book report and the Two Towers in eighth grade, but I never got around to Return of the King. I kept trying to read it, but I just kept stopping.

I, personally, am a tiny bit more of an actress than a reader so I spent most of the time watching the documentaries in the extended edition DVDs (I have all three). However, I still can appreciate the novel and the author and the fact that it took him over ten flipping years to complete it.

The Hobbit is also one of my favorites, but I still can't get through it. I think Tolkien's writing style is so rich that I can't get as absorbed as I would like. I'm a fan of dramatic writing with a little too much edge in the descriptions. Still, he was a very gifted author who deserves every bit of the renown he's been presented.

I personally think the man was a genius. I love his works not so much on their literary merit (I do think there are other, better books out there), but for the sheer splendor of the world he created. Two fully-developed languages, fragments of several others, an entire history, and a world that truly comes to life in his writings...the sheer creative output of the man was staggering.

I'm a huge LOTR fan! (Well, literally I'm normal sized...but anyways.) I've read the book (I have the one big volume edition) at least 5 times and the movies are also a favorite. They are a lot different though. I missed Tom B. in the movies, but I thought the story flowed pretty great in the movies. I'm excited for them to finally make the Hobbit into a movie. I hope it lives up to the standard. The only story I haven't gotten all the way through is the Samarillian. For some reason, I couldn't get into it. But I'll try again probably.
