Hey everyone. I used to have a thread called A Day in the Life of a Graphic Designer, and went back to look at it and it has a lot of old stuff and I didn't want to update the whole thing so I thought I'd start over. I've been out of college for almost 3 years (holy crap!) and I've had a couple different jobs in that time. I thought it might be useful for me to describe some of the things I've done for my jobs.
My first job I had when I got out of school was at a real estate company. I put together the ads you see in the paper featuring houses for sale, and made other advertisements as the agents needed them. It got old always being in a hurry to meet one deadline or the other, and having to keep track of over 200 agents.
So I moved on to a web development company. I really like designing webpages and I learned a lot about building them too. I learned a lot about all different sorts of media, and I became really interested in Flash. My portfolio site is made in Flash. Check it out, if you want. smile www.megsutton.com
I also met my current boyfriend at that job... he's so sweet. *big happy sigh*
But all good things must come to an end, and that company ended up merging with a different company, and that company already had a graphic designer so they laid me off as well as the other designer I worked with. That sucked. I'd never been fired before and I'd rather not ever again!! Hmph.
So I looked for a new job, and lo and behold came across a job at... a real estate company. I do the same sort of thing I used to!!! Its a little weird, and I don't know how much I like it, but whatever. This company is different... their graphic design department is technically a different company underneath the main real estate company. And recently my boss quit because she was tired of nothing changing and everything being crazy at our company... so it was left to me to keep everything together. Luckily I have two new designers I work with, one of which is especially helpful. But man, it has been a stressful couple of weeks. I almost can't believe I'm still alive.
The moral to the story is... I really haven't had a CAREER yet, technically, but I think that might be almost what happens these days to creative people. You never really get paid well enough unless you're really lucky and find someone who values your talent, and you move around a lot from job to job. In my experience. And its not necessarily a bad thing, to move around a lot. Its a good way to learn a lot and get some good experience so you ultimately end up at the perfect job.
So that's my story for right now. I might post some other things I've learned in terms of interviewing and such, but let me know if you have any questions. biggrin

Wow, what a story. Now that I hear that, I wonder how my career path would be. I have a question, since you're probably one of the only people I know who went through this. Right now I'm going for an associates in Visual Communications (Graphic Design). I'm going to go for my Bachelors after, but when do you think is the best time to start an internship? I know someone who went through college for Graphic Design. He never did internship, therefore, nobody would accept him because they thought he wasn't experienced enough. However, his sister did an internship, and was offered a job after college, but she turned it down. Other than that, I don't know much. I tried contacting this lady who visited my school once and talked to me personally about her graphic design career, but I never got a reply back, and that was about 2 months ago. So if you have any idea of when the best time to start an internship, please let me know.
