There's a Squire Jazz Bass out there that you might like. It's a Vintage Modified Jazz Bass and it has a maple finish with black block inlays. It looks sweet and sounds good too.

But if you have the money for a Marshall amp, don't waste it on a Marshall. Go and get yourself an Ampeg 8x10.

If you're going to spend that much money on a bass, don't get yourself a Fender.

Go with either a MusicMan bass or a Gibson.

I've found that most of the high-end Fender's were dissapointing.

And he did say he could only afford a Squire (Which is a wonderful place to start. A Squire was my first bass).

One thing that I have learned, is that don't get a bass for just 'one' genre or style of music.

But if you're going to get a Fender Jazz, get the active Jazz Bass.

I cant recomend a squire to anyone. not even a newb to a bass. I havnt ever seen a squire that didnt have an extremely bowed neck, or problems with the imputs. I think you can go for something a step up to at least learn. Thats my opinion about squires though. Totally unreliable.

I won't be getting a Squire then, I can afford something more expensive, but I was just wondering if it'd be worth getting a Squire.

I have considered getting an Ibanez, but I've got my heart set on getting a Fender, so there's no point in suggesting anything else.

What would be the best all round Fender bass to buy? I don't want anything too expensive because this is just a starter bass.

But, I don't see the point in buying a bad bass if it's not going to last and if I'm going to want to replace within a year or so.

Btw, I'm looking for a bass that I'd be able to pop and slap on (I can pop alright, but slapping's a work in progress if anyone's intersted).

While I do not condone Squier's or Fenders in general, I hafta say don't ever buy a name brand. Squier, Epiphone, Oscar Shmidt; they are all made by their respective parent companieds out of the same exact material by the exact same hands that make the name brand. When you buy a Gibson Les Paul; unless it's over 5 grand, is exactly the same as that 500 dollar Epiphone. Get your moneys worth people.

Well, I'm from New Zealand, so they'd be about $1000 odd then, unless I can find a good deal. But, I'm going to get the Bass on higher purchase now that I've got a job that pays me fairly well. Yeah, but anything higher than $1000 I don't want to buy, because it'll take too long to pay off (this will have interest on it, so yeah).

Thanks for the help, next time I'm somewhere that has a Rockshop, I'll go have a look for them and see what type of deal I can get.
