Stxitxchxes Cougar Draven Stxitxchxes I call shenanigans on Lilith being in the book of Isaiah until I see proof otherwise. The Talmudic passages in questions reference Lilith, they do not cite her. A reference does not denote canonical existance or authority, as they are likely simply cultural references (much like we'd reference Lilith in the magazine that bears her name today). The Alphabet of Ben-Sira is a satire, and the date on it is highly arguable. It likely originates in the late first Millenia AD, based on cultural references. And Lilith's main appearence comes from a parable (not literal canon, I remind you) in the Midrash. Isaiah 34:11. Translated as "screech owl" in NIV and KJV, generally "owl" in most of the others. My favorite is The Message, only because damn, it's long, for one verse. And it clearly mentions Lilith. After reading the passage in question and the commentaries associated with it, I'm leaning towards a cultural reference. Rashi's commentary leads me heavily to believe that it's being used as a literary device to drive home how bad Hashem means for the retribution to be. As for what the Talmud is, NFL, the Talmud is a large book of Jewish Law and commentary. Some of it is literally canonical, but not all of it. Really it's jsut a big book of rabbis talking and arguing amongst themselves about specific points of halachah and canon. Light, please not NFL, and yes I was close...about the Talmud thing.

lilith is Jinn. jinn, much like Adam is made out of Sand, is made out of smokeless fire. in the midrash she is said to be the care taker of the four armed four legged two headed creature that was Adam (not ish the hebrew word for man) adam was a genderless creature that Adam (ish) and eve (isha) came from when it was split in half to create mankind. also lilithwas supposedly the first wife of adam (ish) who was "wisked" away to heaven when she refused to have sex with adam (ish) and be underneath him (literaly), she wanted to have sex standing up so as to be equals (thus her apperance in many femminist movements) she was not orignialy understood as an evil created but later commentaries wrote her out to be a demon. this is why jewish families do not cut the hair of boys until age 3 because it is said that lilith hates the human boys and will kidnapp baby boys and kill/take them to heaven. thus to confuse her they make their boy look like a girl til they are no longer a baby but a toddler.

I don't believe the sex and domination thing. Lilith isn't a feminist icon (or should not be), she's meant to symbolize the non-human that was created along with humanity. She essentially refused to be a part of humanity.

The only things I have heard about Lilith are things from word of mouth. so this is strictally conspiracy theory. My understanding of what she is in Catholic teachings(and thats all I'm really qualified to speak on) is that, legend has it, that when God made humanity, he made Adam and then he made Lillith. Lillith was strong willed and in every way Adams equal both mentally and physically(but obviously anatomically different), yet she held Adam in contempt and was not very fond of him or his sexual advances. She began to lure angels wth the temptations of her body and learned many things from them and empowered herself through the knowledge of the angels. God was displeased with this and he cast out Lillith and the angels she had won over from Eden.
So Then God made Eve, the almost polar opposite of Lillith, to be the wife of Adam. And Lillith lived out beyond Eden with her small vanguard of angels, and somehow is mixed in with the devil. It gets fuzzy much more after that.I've seen her mentioned off and on in sci-fi and fantasy movies, novels and series but you will be hard pressed to find any of the Catholic teachings admitting to her existence. becasue that would imply God had made an error, a big contradiction to the dogma.

ha... it seems , just as with the whole condom issue, the vatican and papacy are changing the dogmatic views to better fit themselves.... or is that just me?
