I think if schools provided better spelling and grammar courses, there would be a lot higher grades on the SAT's. I also think sometimes the teachers are to blame.

The lack of emphasis on spelling and grammar in British schools absolutely horrifies me. I had a good education at excellent schools but still there was never anything approaching grammar lessons in English classes. All the English grammar I was ever taught came via the teaching of foreign languages. It infuriated the French and German teachers so much that their students didn't know the difference between verbs and nouns or other basic gramatical features! Grammar is almost old-fashioned in schools now.
