http://www.cervex.com/

I had an exam Monday, and one of those was used for the first time on me. The state now requires my gyno to test for HPV, so he used it. I also had an abnormal smear two years ago, which could have factored into its use.

Has anyone else had one used on them? I find it very uncomfortable, but it could be because I'm a virgin. While Pap smears have never been pleasant for me, this one rubbed me the wrong way for some reason.

There was some bleeding, since it took the cells from my cervix, but it stopped overnight. I just put a pantiliner in and that took care of it.

So, other than if anyone has had experience with one of these, I guess my question is, is it normal for me to feel the discomfort I did with this? Is it because of my virginity, or because it was the first time it was used on me? I guess I'm confused.

It is not because you are a virgin. Your cervix stays the same whether you are a virgin or not. Some women do have a sensitive cervix, however. Some women are very sensitive to pokes and prods and will bleed a bit during or after an exam. This is not uncommon and usually not a big deal, but you might as well let your ob-gyn know the next time you see her anyway just in case.

I didn't notice when it was used on me. My doc used it for my first one, so I didn't think anything of it.

I did bleed for a little bit afterwards, but there wasn't any discomfort (aside from the whole speculum thing).

The Pap smear is one of the normal parts of a gyno exam.

Yes it is done with a small brush that is poked at the center of your cervix and rotated to gather cells for clinical examination.

Seeing that advanced cervical cancer has a very high mortality rate, your pap smear is an annual must for every female over the age of 18 or once she starts having sex.

The brush was quite uncomfortable for me, for some reason, but nothing that didn't stop hurting after an hour. I am not a virgin and it was still painful, so I guess it's not that reason

That just reminds me of a monologue in The v****a Monologues. This girl is pissed about the cold duck lips, and near the end says "warm up the duck lips!"

Sounds like your doctor had good intentions, but just went overboard on the warming.

Gyno exams have always been uncomfortable and sometimes slightly painful for me. I dont know if I am just extra sensitive or what, but they always bother me. I usually spot bleed for a few hours up to a day afterwards, but its nothing to serious. And you want to get a full physical once a year! Especially if you have a family history of cervical, ovarian, or uterin cancer in your family. I go every year, my grandfather insists that every girl in the family go because his mother died of one of those types of cancer (I cant remember which one) and she had NEVER gone to the doc for it (her generation didnt do those types of things) and then when the pain was so bad she finally went and they told her she had 6 months to live! So, all us women in the family go every year lol been doing it since we started our periods.

Gyn exams have always been very painful for me, and I usually bleed quite a bit. I guess my cervix is just really sensitive. My doctor has also informed me, in her words, that I am "tight" and "virginal" (I am not a virgin).

But, I did go to a different doctor twice and get a pap and exam once, because my doctor was away. It WAS much better. Having talked to other people who go to my doctor, I've found out that my doctor really is just *rough*. It was still painful with the other doctors, but not make-me-cry painful. So there is variation in how gentle a doctor can be.
