It was early morning, and the air was cool and crisp. The temperature was still rather high, but it was low for the area, and it felt good. Ash often woke up around this time in the mornings because he liked to feel the cool wind against his fur. It seemed to relax him.
Moving so as not to awake his mate, the lovely Kit, he rose to his paws then silently walked out of the little den they shared. It was a little rock crevice that didn't look much like any place to sleep, but he felt it was quite suitable for them. It was small and cozy and it seemed to do the job for them.
As he came out and felt the wind rush through his mane, he closed his eyes and smiled, taking in a deep breath. It freshened his lungs and made him feel happy and excited all over again. His life with Kit seemed absolutely perfect, and he couldn't think of anything in that particular moment that could make it any better. He was glad he had agreed to come here with her that one fateful day. If he hadn't, he'd probably still be all alone and confused.
Yawning, his great fangs shining in the early morning light, he sat himself down then simply watched the landscape. It was too beautiful.

Kit remained peacefully asleep, unaware that Ash had quietly crept out of their den. Instead of being aware of her familiar surroundings, she was dreaming that she was back in the graveyard, walking towards her father's den with a round belly. Ash was besides her, and despite the bleak atmosphere, they were positively ecstatic. She purred and pressed her cheek to his, and he twisted his head to lick her cheek lovingly. No words passed between them, and everything faded to black.
Suddenly, she was lying in a beautiful field, one filled with lovely flowers. Ash was beside her, and there were several little balls of fur pressed against her belly. She did not stop to count them - for some reason, it didn't matter. She was there, with her mate and her family, and everything was perfect...
Kit's eyes snapped open, finding herself back in their comfortable little den. Ash was missing, but she wasn't worried. Rising to her paws, she stretched, fangs bared as she yawned. A tremor ran through her body as she relaxed her muscles and shook off, heading towards the mouth of the cave. The dream confirmed it. It was true.
As she approached Ash, she let out a purr of greeting. Kit settled down beside him, resting her cheek against his shoulder.
"Good morning, Ash."

Ash opened his eyes as his round ears picked up the sound of the lioness moving within the den. He smiled, turning his head to watch her come out. She was always so graceful and beautiful, he felt blessed to be able to stand by her side for the rest of her life.
Purring as she came out, he licked the top of her head in a greeting. "Good morning, love," he said quietly, feeling as if the moment were just too amazing to really say anything loud. Flicking his tail to the side, he wrapped it delicately around hers. His love was simply so great for her that he felt his heart would burst at any moment. How did he come to be so lucky?
Nuzzling her as she leaned herself against him, he purred again. "Have a good rest?" he asked, his blue eyes watching her.

Kit looked up at him, still fairly petite compared to him, even as an adult. Her green eyes were soft and inwardly she too wondered how she ever could've gotten this lucky. A handsome, kind and caring mate, a beautiful home in her favourite place, and now... cubs on the way.
"Very," she said with a smile, leaning up to lick his cheek lovingly. "I hope you did, too." She curled her tail around his, letting out a relaxed sigh.
It was time to tell him, wasn't it?
"Ash..." she said, her voice soft and expression warm. "Do you remember how we were talking about having a family? Musing about cubs, thinking about how many... well..."
Breathe.
"I'm pregnant," she said finally, giving a tentative smile.

Ashki purred and leaned himself into his mate. But he was careful not to place too much weight onto her. Despite them both being adults, he was rather large and so outweighed her in an instant. He didn't want to hurt her.
"I'm glad to hear you did," he whispered, nibbling gently at her ears affectionately. "And I did too," he purred. Every night he seemed to get the perfect sleep. He believed it was because of her. Ever since Kit had come into his life, he hadn't had any more nightmares and he'd never woken up in the middle of the night, scared as hell.
Pulling back slightly so he could look at her, he nodded in response. "Of course, I remember perfectly." As she seemed to grow a bit silent, his brows raised slightly and he leaned down to peer at her eye to eye.
"Kit, what's--" he began, but cut himself off as he heard those two simple words fall from his mate's mouth.
"You're... you're... p-pregnant?" he stammered, almost not believing it. But his mate would never lie to him, he knew that. She was telling the truth. They were going to be parents. Parents, just like they had talked about not too long ago.
"Oh my... Kit! That's wonderful! I can't believe it! We're going to be parents!" he exclaimed, absolute bliss coming down upon him. "Oh... Kit, this is so amazing! I love you," he said, practically melting. They were going to be parents!

Kit's lips pulled into a broader smile at her mate's reaction. Her dear Ash - so warm and bright, so ecstatic about the pregnancy! Her eyes lit up and she nipped at the tuft of fur on his cheek lovingly. "Oh Ash, I love you too... so, so much! To think, we're bringing little bundles of life into this world, to experience the joy there is in life. And they're ours... ours! This must be the most extreme love I could ever feel," she said happily, sighing. "The most perfect mate, and now several little cubs growing inside of me that are us."
Suddenly, there was a look of mischief in her eyes, and she pressed a forepaw to her belly. "Oh, and Ash?... I think there are several of them. More than three, that's for sure." What a pawful they'd be! But she was readily up for the challenge.
"I wonder how many there really are, and if they're boys or girls... and what they'll look like... and what they'll act like..."

Purring rather loudly, the male smiled and nuzzled his nose into the neck of his mate. They were going to be parents! And he was going to be a father. Him, of all lions. As a cub, no one would have ever thought he'd live to grow so strong and to actually start a family of his own. Oh, if his mother could have only seen him now. She would have been very proud.
"Ours," he repeated, sounding so amazed and full of awe. Blushing slightly as Kit said that she had the most perfect mate, he flicked his tail across hers and nuzzled her again. "You will be the most perfect mother," he spoke softly, his blue eyes gazing into her beautiful orbs.
As she pressed her paw to her belly, he pulled away slightly so that he could look at her belly. There were cubs growing inside of there, and more than three if Kit's feelings were right. Amazing.
"More than three.. wow," he breathed. "We're going to have our paws full," he chuckled. But it didn't matter to him. Like his mate, he was more than ready to take on this challenge. They would raise these cubs properly, in a loving family in the most wonderful place on earth. Their family would be perfect.
"I'm wondering the same things," he admitted, glancing back into her eyes. "I hope there's so many for us to love, and to love us back," he purred, pressing the side of his body against hers. "But however many there are and no matter what they look like, I'm sure they will be the most beautiful and the most perfect cubs.."

Kit smiled tenderly at Ash, licking his nose. "And you'll be a wonderful father," she purred, twining her tail with his. "Our cubs... our cubs! I can't believe it! It feels like just yesterday that our paths crossed." Her smile as warm as she added, "And gods, I'm glad that happened. I wouldn't want my life any other way." In a slightly more serious voice, she murmured, "I love you more than I ever thought possible, Ash. You are the light that shines during every day of my life. I love you, Ash... I love you."
She leaned against him, burying her nose in his dark mane. The morning sun shone on her silver pelt, making in sparkle. It was as though her joy was manifesting itself in a physical, ethereal way.
Kit let out a happy sigh.

Ashki nearly melted at the lick, lovingly nuzzling his mate in return. He was as amazed as she was that their lives had turned out so perfect. He didn't even want to imagine what life would be like for him in that particular moment if the lovely lioness hadn't been there with him. He wondered if he maybe would have even been able to live this long on his own, with no one to love and to love him in return.
Figuring it was best not to linger on that particular subject, he pushed the thoughts from his mind and instead focused on the pregnant Kit.
"I'm glad too!" he breathed, more happiness coming from just that moment than he had ever remembered feeling in his entire life on earth. Kit just made his life so much better, and he felt both extremely grateful and lucky to have her forever and always.
"Without you, I could not live," he whispered back, licking delicately at her ears. "I love you so much."
