I don't know any scales or solos.. but does anyone have some tips for picking up really fast speed while playing? I am going to try to start learning some scales soon.. I am hoping they improve my speed on guitar and ability to play solos.

I get really annoyed that I can't pick fast enough. I have been alternate picking (up down up down strokes) more though and I think that's definately helping me. And I'm trying to build up some strength in my pinky finger..

Leanr to alternate pick. In theory it allows you to pick twice as fast as a person the same skill level picking one way.

Well hell Johnny Ramone made a pretty good career picking one way. xd

But you don't become Satriani or Malmsteen level virtuosness by not alternate picking.

I'm not suggesting you should only pick one way, I'm just stating a fact.

Yes you did. mrgreen

The majority of my scales are in standard pentatonic, but I always add random notes in. Depends what's going on in the background though, so like if it's a really groovy beat I'll tend to add the odd raised 6th to give it that funky sound. But then if there's a bit more emotion to the song I'm more likely to add a few natural 2nds here and there. I used to do tapping in a lot my solos but I find it a bit tedious/predictable now...

As to the power chord thing AshWufei and Triste were talking about, I always use my pinky to play the higher octave note. (Unless I'm only playing two notes...) But if it's on the bottom three strings I usually use my thumb to fret the bass note.

Well, everyone loves pentatonics. I use both major and minor pentatonics and natural major and minor scales as well. When I'm soloing over a blues progression I like to use pentatonics but I also really like to use the dorian mode to give it that jazzy feel. I don't play it all the time but I LOVE the mixolydian mode. It's like a mix of major and minor sounds that kick a**.

Anyway, as far as soloing tricks, sweeped arpeggios w/ tapping is fun. Also try bending a note and then tap just a few notes on the same string then release the bend.

When I move to do a solo, one of my favorite things to do is play up through a minor pentatonic, and when I come back down I find a note in common with the major pentatonic and so-on up/down the fretboard.
