This is not intended to be an attack on your criticism of my work or anyone else who uses 'manga' or 'anime' style art...but

in your opinion, what is 'good' anime/manga art??

I know some of you ( at least Dr.V ) just don't' like it much or at all, to begin with..but if you HAD to provide an example??
can you show us (me) examples? and perhaps explain?? please? I'm so confused.

Now I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally like anime with some sort of understand of anatomy. If it's all stick arms and legs with no proper bone structure or meat on their bones, it doesn't really do it for me.

[here and here are good examples]

I'm also not a fan of the solids cg where they use white to highlight everything and it gives it a very shiney appeal, but rather when they attempt to color the character like they would in a more realistic painting.

I'm not a big anime hater in general though, I think what 'good' art all lies in what a person's individual tastes are. Some people love the bug-eyed skinny look, some people can't stand it.

Oh, s**t, jeez, where is my boyfriend when I need him. D:

He has a huge directory full of his favorite artists, and a few of them are absolutely stunning anime/manga style artists. When he's online, I'll be sure to direct him this way. I'd only be repeating what he said less successfully, so I'll refrain.

5 I think I hate that one the most. D:

Basically, I like something that looks unique. Unique colours, style, details, etc. Stick anime girls with sparkly eyes aren't really that attractive anymore. Even a stick anime girl can look good if the artist is really good though. But generally, something a little different works best for me.

I suggest picking up Japanese Comickers 1 & 2. They showcase some truly amazing Japanese artists, who have awesome style that doesn't fit the typical "anime" mold.

[edit] Fixed up the links. smile

I'm more anime-oriented as an artist, so I'll think I have more tolerant taste than most of the other Fags here. I definitely agree with Tawney on the "Shoujo=no" thing. I don't mind the big eyes at all (I draw them myself. >>;;; ) but I hate the lack of any kind of anatomy skills whatsoever. Plus, ALL SHOUJO LOOKS THE FREAKIN' SAME. It drives me nuts.

Realistic anime is pretty cool, like HTK art. But I'm more impressed with his coloring ability.

The art of One Piece, Bleach, and Death Note/Hikaru no Go are some of my favorites. One Piece is definitely unique, and while Oda's figures certainly aren't the most impressive as far as anatomy goes, they're fun and dynamic, and his backgrounds are ridiculously amazing. I like Kubo's style from Bleach, and Obata, who illustrated DN/Hikago has a nice way of drawing large eyes that are animeish, but still realistic. And he draws cute mouths on girls XD

Wow, some nice examples up there. Thanks.

I'm not an anime fan but I guess I could be if someone ploughed through the reams of crap for me to pick out the good stuff; I realise it's there though.

Good looking pictures are all about effort and time. Ok, a 3 second doodle might have some charm but only if you've spent years practising how to get it right.

My main problem with anime is that it is mostly a lazy excuse to get a few comments on whatever you submit it to and brings out the worst cliches in amateur art- the poor anatomy, the bland look, the hack-kneed themes- that are passed off as "cartoony" and so somehow supposed to be ok.

I don't have any examples off-hand, but I'll add a "I concur!" to the examples already given.

Basically, I like anime art where it's clear that the artist got a thorough understanding of anatomy and proportion before they started drawing Anime Style Stuff. Where their primary source material is Real Life Stuff that they've passed through their internal style filter, rather than their primary source being Anime Style Stuff that they've tried to imitate without actually understanding all the principles behind it.

Anime based on observation of real life with a sound foundation of artistic know-whats = WIN

Anime based on other anime without a sound foundation of artistic know-whats = LOSE

Anime isn't bad. It's just how easily some people (especially those less serious about art) are impressed by anime that annoys me, because it really can be a simple but attractive style. But, like all art, the "good" anime drawings are the ones done by people who have been drawing for years and can actually draw people, not just cartoons, with a good concept and style. And the crappy anime art is done by people who would not have a chance inside an art school, because they don't have very versatile skillzz.

Today I showed my friend a picture I did of Sailor Moon for someone else. She said it was ugly (in a kidding way) because it didn't actually look like the Sailor Moon style. That was pretty annoying, because Sailor Moon is really ugly.

from my opinion...i find that there's going to be 'good' art and 'bad' art regardless of genre. and that the things that people don't generally like about 'bad' anime art are things that encompass other areas like poor anatomy, unrefined skills, supposed styles that outweigh aesthetics, etc.

crazy spork i am
